invented a new and useful Improvementin Slack-Gable Devices, of which the following isa specification.

An object of the invention is to provide i" simple and reliable mechanism-oithis charactor, the same being inclosed in a protecting casing designed to permit ready access to the inclosed mechanism.

In the accompanying" drawings whichembodying the invention, Figure the mechanism, the casing being shown in section; Fig. 2 isa front elevation of the same, the cover section of the casing being removed.
The casing comprises a stationary section may have cast and 4:, adapting it to besecured to any sultable base or support. A cover section 2 1s removably secured to the main section 1 by bolts 5. Within the casing is an electric on pivot shaft 7 having bearingsin the easing or in brackets 8 formed integral with the casing. This contacts 9 secured to the ends of leaf springs 10. The latter switch arm by means'of a bolt 11. This bolt and the springs 10 carrying the contacts 9 are insulated from the switch arm by means of a bushing 12 made of any suitable insulating material. Stationary contacts 13 are carried by the bracket arms 14:. a When the safety device used in connection with a traction elevator or other hoisting mechanism, it is secured in position with-the cross bar '26 beneath and 1n close proximity to the hoisting drum. The parts .are normally in the relative position indicated in the drawings. In this position the arm 21 holds the .switchclosed. A coil spring 28 is located in a pocket orrecess 29 formed in the casing or a block 30 formed integral with the casing. This spring tends to move the switch arm 6' upwardly but. such movement isresisted by the .arm 21. If now the hoisting cable becomes slack, it
will engage the cross strip 26 and move the latter downward swinging the arm 21 to the right, and carrying. the roller 22 into-a recess 23. is swung open by the spring 28, separating the switch contacts 9 and 13. The weights 23 which normall hold the locking arm 21 in are carried upwardnand The switch arm 6 is now free and to the left as the shaft rotates, and theireifective weight gradually reduced. If the operate, the roller 22 would be brought into contact with a projection 30 carried bythe switch lever and swing the latter to open position independently of the spring. This operation might'also take place in conjunction with the spring and assist the latter 28 should, for any reason, fail to' Ice in opening the switch. It will thus be seen that the locking arm 21 not only acts as a locking device to hold the switch closed and when permit it to be opened by the a. so onusv a the said arm is operated, b t
positive means adapted to open the switch independently of the spring 28.
It will be observed that the switch con tacts and binding posts extend beyond the main portion 1 of the casing and are located in the cover portion 2, so that when the lat ter is removed the switch mechanism is entirely exposed and readily accessible for adjustment or repairs. Removable screw plugs 31 may be provided in the sides of the casing to permit access to the switch independently of the removable cover.
We wish not to be limited to the particu-., lar construction herein disclosed, as various modifications might be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
' \Vhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In combination, a casing, a switch located therein and comprising a movable switch arm, a rock-shaft extending through the casing, a locking arm carried by. said shaft, and movable into position to lock the switch arm in closed position, weights secured to the ends of the rocksha ft externally of the casing and in position to hold the locking arm in looking position, and aframe carried by the rock shaft for operating the latter.
2. In a slack cable device, the combination of a casing,"a switch located th rein and comprising a pivoted switch arm, a switch opening spring, a rock shaft extending through the casing, a locking arm carried by said shaft in position to lock the switch arm in closed position, a projection carried by the switch arm in the path of said looking arm, arms secured to the ends of the rock shaft outside the casing, a cross bar connecting said arms, and a weight carried by the rock shaft in position to hold the locking arm in locking position.
3. In a slack cable device, the combination of a casing, a switch located therein and comprlsing a pivoted switch arm, a sprmg for moving said arm to open positlon, a

arm operable by said shaft in position to lock the switch arm in closed position, and engageable with the switch arm positively to move the same to open position, and arecess in said switch arm co-acting with said locking arm when the latter is in looking position and adapted to offer resistance to the movement of the said locking arm to unlocking position,

In a slack cable device, the combination of a casing, a switch located therein and comprising a pivoted switch arm, a spring for moving said arm to open position, a. rock shaft extending through the casing, an arm operated by said shaft to lock the switch arm in closed position, means carried by the switch arm coacting with said shaft and arm positively to move the switch arm to open position, and a recess in said switch arm co-acting with said locking arm when the latter is in looking position and adapted to offer resistance to the movement of the said locking arm to unlocking position.
5. In combination, a switch comprising a movable switch arm, a rock'shaft, a locking arm carried by said shaft, and movable into position to lock the switch arm in closed position, weights secured to the ends of the rock shaft and in position to hold the locking arm in locking position, and a frame carried by the rock shaft for operating the latter.
