@NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IANN G. PETERSON, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO MANHATTAN ELECTRICAL SUPPLY COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CLIP DEVICE.
Application filed March 30, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANN G. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clip Devices, of which the following is a specification.
lChis invention relates to clip devices, the object of the invention being toprovide an article of this character which is simple in construction, which can be readily and inexpensively made and which is effective in action.
A clip device involving my invention can be employed with advantage in many difierent connections, for instance it can be incorporated in a snap switch such as shown in Letters Patent No. 1,077,746 granted to me November at, 1913 and to which reference may be had.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification I have shown in detail. one of the several convenient forms of embodiment of the invention, which to enable those skilled in the art to practise the same will be set forth fully in the following description. I do not restrict myself to this showing, however; I may depart therefrom in several respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claims following said description.
Referring to said drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the supporting body of a switch, provided with clip devices involving my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
As already noted a clip device comprising my invention may be employed with advantage in many different connections, it being of especial utility when embodied in a switch. In some cases the switch may be provided with two of such clip devices, while in others as in the patent to which I have already referred, there may be four of such clip devices.
In the drawings the numeral 2 denotes the supporting body of a switch, and this body may be made of porcelain, composition or any other desirable material. A descrip- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 27, 1915.

tion of one clip device and the parts associated therewith will apply to the others, as in the organization shown they are of duplicate construction. On the upper side of the supporting body 2 is a part 3 which covers a cavity or opening 4 in 'said supporting body and which may be held in place by the screw 5 tapped thereinto. Extending outward from the plate 3 is a flange 6 through which is tapped the screw 7, the head of the screw being adapted to bind a wire against the flange 6.
The plate 3 constitutes a suitable support for the body member 8 of the clip device. As shown said body member is reduced or cut away at opposite sides to produce companion shoulders 9. While the said body member 8 is shown as being of approxi mately T-form, this is not a matter of moment, as it might be of any other shape. The inner portion of said body member 8, which latter can be conveniently stamped from sheet metal, projects through a slot 10 in the plate 3 and its inner terminal portion is shown having staked therefrom the projections 11 to prevent said body 8 from being accidentally separated from the plate 3. It will be understood that the inner reduced portion of the body member 8 is passed through the slot 10 after which the projections 11 are staked therefrom subsequent to which the plate 3 is mounted in place, the staked portion of the body member extending into the cavity 4:. Fitted around the reduced or shank portion of the body member 8 are the contacts 12 which are generally made of resilient material and which have approximately rectangular slots to closely receive said shank or reduced porswitch, which blade, however, is not shown herein. These spacing members extend short of the free portions of the contact members 12 so as not to interfere with the resiliency or springiness of said contact members. As a matter of fact the spacing members are practically located at the butts of the two contact members 12.
What I claim is:
1. A clip comprising a flat body member and superposed contacts slotted at their butts to receive said contact member, said contacts presenting a clip.
2. A clip comprising a flat body member and superposed contacts slotted at their butts to receive said contact member, said contacts presenting a clip, said body member being shouldered to present stop means for the contact portions.
3. A clip device comprising a flat body member having a portion reduced to provide opposite shoulders and a plurality of flat contacts slotted at their butts to receive said body portion, said contacts cooperating to present a clip and the shoulders presenting bearing means for the contacts.
4-. A clip device comprising a flat body member, a plurality of flat contacts, the bodies of which are slotted to receive the body member, the contacts cooperating to present a clip, and a spacing element be tween the contacts, also slotted to receive said body member.
5. A clip device comprising a supporting member having a slot, a flat body member extending through said slot and the base of which has staked portions engaging the under side of the body member, said body member above the supporting member being reduced to provide opposite shoulders, and a plurality of flat contacts slotted at their butts to receive the reduced part of the body member, said contacts cooperating to present a clip and the shoulders constituting bearing 4 means for the contacts.
6. A clip device comprising a supporting plate having a slot and also having a tapped hole, a fiat body plate extending through said slot and provided with projections 4 staked from the opposite sides thereof and engaging the under surface of said supporting plate, said body plate being reduced to present side shoulders, and contacts spaced from each other, slotted to receive the re- 5 duced portion of the body plate, the shoulders presenting bearing means for the contacts.
7. A clip device comprising a supporting member having a. slot, a flat body member 5 extending through said slot and provided with projecting means engaging the under side of the supporting member, said fiat body member being shouldered, and flat contacts fitted to the fiat body member, spaced 6 from each other, the shouldered portion of the flat body member constituting bearing means for the contacts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
