To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES S. CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Correctionville, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Disk Pulverizers, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention is an improvement in attachments for disk pulverizers, and has for its object to provide an attachment of the character specified, for counteracting the side thrust of the soil on the, disk gangs when in their working position, thereby relieving friction,-and wherein the attachment is also designed to aid' in returning the gangs to alined or inoperative position.
' A further object is to provide means for constraining the pulverizer to remain steady and to perform its function better in every 1 1 1 the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvedpulverizer, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the attachment, and Fig. 3 is a section through a disk supporting shaft.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a disk pulverizer, comprising a tongue 1, to the rear end of which is connected a seat 2,.by means of a seat plate 3. One end of the plate is secured to the seat and the other end is provided with an angular h1g4, which is lapped upon the tongue 1, near its rear end and secured thereto in a manner to be presently described. v
The disks 5 are journaled on shafts 6, and the disks are arranged in series, each shaft carrying a series, and the series are arranged on opposite sides of the tongue. Angle bars 7 are arranged above the shafts 6, each bar being supported from the adjacent shaftby means of arms 8, which are connected at one end to the angle bars, and which have at the other end bearings 9, journaled upon the adjacent shaft 6, between a pair of disks.
Cleaning. blades 10 of resilient material are connected with the angle bars, each blade being connected to the adjacent angle bar by means of a T bracket 11. Each cleaning blade is at the concave face of the adjacent disk, and each blade is so shaped that it will engage the said face and will clean the same from any soil that may become attached to the said face.
The shafts 6 are supported from a transverse frame connected with the tongue, the said frame comprising a lower plate 12, which is arranged transversely of the tongue beneath the same, and an upper plate 18 arranged above the tongue. The plates 12 and 13 are connected at intervals by bolts 14: and sleeves or arbors 15 are arranged on the bolts between the plates to space the plates apart. I Q
The frame consisting of the plates l213 is braced against the tongue by means of inclined brace rods 16. Each of the brace rods 16 is pivoted at its outer end by means of a bracket 50 to the adjacent end of the frame 12-13, and the'innerend of each rod is passed through an opening in a bracket 17, secured to the tongue and the said end of the rod is engaged by a nut 18 on the opposite side of the bracket from the body of the rod. The link 52 is arranged between the outer end of each angle bar 7 and the bracket 50 before mentioned, the upper end of the link being connected to the angle bar and the lower end being connected to the bracket 50 by means of a pin 51.
The shafts 6 are adjusted by means of a lever 19, which is pivoted to a toothed sector 20 on the tongue, and the lever is provided with the usual latch mechanism 21, cooperating with the sector to hold the lever in adjusted position. The lower end of the lever is connected to the front ends of links 22, by means of a rod 23, and the rear end of each link is pivotally connected to'the bearing 9, before mentioned. The rod 23 connects the lever. with both links, and it will be evident'that when the lever is released from the sector and swung in the proper direction, the shafts 6 will be simultaneously moved in opposite directions to vary the inclination of the planes of the disks 5 with respect to the direction of movement of the pulverizer.
v A foot plate 24 is arranged transversely of an inclined brace plate 25, which is arranged between the seat plate 3 and the tongue. The upper end of thebr-aceplate 25 is connected to the plate 3 intermediate its ends, and the lower end of the said'brace plate is provided with an angular lug 26, which is lapped upon the upper face of the body of a cross bar 27. This cross bar 27 is connected to the tongue by means of a bolt 29. The bolt is passed upwardly through the tongue and through the angular lug 4 of the seat plate 3, through a block 28, the bar 27 and the portion 26 of the brace plate 25, and is engaged by a nut 30. The bolt and nut thus clamp the cross bar 27 to the tongue.
On each side of the tongue the cross bar is downwardly offset as indicated at 31, and the outer end of each of the offset portions is provided with a vertical portion 32. Each of the vertical portions 32 has at its lower end an inwardly extending angular lug 33, and a substantially U-shaped clip or yoke is connected to each lug. Each of the said clips or yokes comprises a body 34, and arms 35, extending at right angles from the body at each end thereof, and each yoke is pivoted to the adjacent lug by means of a bolt and nut 36.
Each arm 35 of each of the clips or yokes is provided with an opening, and the openings are in alinement. The opening of each clip or yoke is engaged by the body of an eye bolt 37, the said bolt being passed from within outward, and a coil spring 38 encircles each bolt between the innermost arm of the adjacent yoke and a stop adjustably mounted on the eye bolt on the inner side of the outermost arm of the adjacent yoke or clip. Each of the said stops comprises a washer 39 and a nut 40, arranged on the outer side of the washer, and having a threaded engagement with the bolt. Each spring 37 is thus arranged between the yoke and the eye bolt and normally acts to press the eye bolt longitudinally outward. By means of the nuts 40 the tension of the springs may be adjusted.
A flexible member 41, a chain in the present instance, is connected with the eye of each bolt. Each chain 41 has one end con nected with the eye of the adjacent eye bolt, and the other end of the chain is adapted for connection to the adjacent link 22, by means of a loop or eye 42, swiveled to the link. The attachment comprising my invention is the cross bar 27 and the elements supported thereby.
From an inspection of Fig. 3, it will be noted that thebearing 9 is provided with a single lug 43, tangential to the bearing to which the arm 8 is connected by means of a bolt and nut 44, and with a pair of vertically spaced lugs 45, between which a bearing on the rear end of the adjacent link 22 is received, and a bolt 46 is passed through the lugs and the bearings to pivotally connect the link to the bearing.
The series of disks are oppositely arranged, the members of each series having their concave faces away from the tongue. lVhen for instance, the inner ends of the shafts are rearward, it will be evident that the side thrust will be toward the tongue, the pressure of the uncut soil tending to press all of the disks longitudinally of the shaft toward the tongue. A spring 37 however, is arranged between each shaft and what may be considered as a fixed stop, namely, the yoke 3435, and these springs counteract or counterbalance the side thrust.
I claim I 1. An attachment for disk pulverizers, comprising in combination with the pulverizer having a frame, having a forwardly extending tongue, and having shafts arranged on opposite sides of the tongue and supported intermediate their ends for swinging movement, a series of concavo-convex disks supported by each shaft, the disks of each series having their concave faces outwardly, a lever journaled on the frame, a link pivoted to the inner end of each shaft and extending forwardly therefrom to a pivotal connection with the lever, said lever being adaptedto swing the shafts simulta neously in opposite directions and having means for holding the same in adjusted position, a bar mounted transversely of the tongue and provided at each end with a depending portion, each of the said portions having an inwardly extending lug, a substantially U-shaped clip connected with each lug, each lug comprising a body pivoted to the lug intermediate its ends and depending arms at the ends of the body, said arms having alined openings, an eye bolt supported in the openings of each clip, the eye of each bolt being inward, a flexible and adjustable connection between the eye of each bolt and the adjacent link, a coil spring encircling each bolt between the armsof the clip, and an adjustable stop on each bolt at the outer side of the spring, each of the said stops comprising a nut threaded on to the bolt and a washer between the nut and the spring.
2. An attachment for disk pulverizers, comprising in combination with the pulverizer having a frame, having a forwardly extending tongue, and having shafts arranged on opposite sides of the tongue and supported intermediate their ends for swinging movement, a series of concavoconvex disks supported by each shaft, the disks of each series having their concave faces outwardly, a lever journaled on the frame, a link pivoted to the inner end of each shaft and extending forwardly therefrom to a pivotal connection with the lever, said lever being adapted to swing the shafts simultaneously in opposite directions and having means for holding the same in adjusted position, a bar mounted transversely of the tongue and provided at each end with adepending portion, each of the said portionshaving an inwardly extending lug, a substantially U-shaped clip connected with each lug, each lug comprising a body pivoted to the lug intermediate its ends and depending arms at the ends of the body, said arms having alined openings, an eye bolt supported in the openings of each clip, the eye of each bolt being inward, a flexible and adjustable connection between the eye of each bolt and the adjacent link, a coil spring encircling each bolt between the arms of the clip, and an adjustable stop on each bolt at the outer side of the spring.
8. An attachment for disk pulverizers, comprising in combination with the pulverizer having a frame provided with a forwardly extending tongue, shafts supported on opposite sides of the tongue for swinging movement intermediate their ends, a series of concavo-convex disks journaled on each shaft, the disks of each shaft being, arranged in their concave faces outward, a link extending forwardly from the inner end of each shaft and pivoted to the shaft, a lever pivoted to the frame and connected to the links for simultaneously swinging the shafts in opposite directions, and yielding means normally pulling the front ends of the links outward, and a common support connected with the tongue for supporting the said yielding means, each of the said means comprising a clip consisting of a body and depending arms, a bolt mounted to slide in the arms of each clip and adjustably connected at its inner ends to the adjacent link, and .a spring normally pressing each bolt outward.
