To all whom 'it may concern n Be it known that I, .HOWARD M. BARBER, a
. citizen of theUnited States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Collecting, Associating, and Folding Machmes, of which the following is a specificatlon.
The object of this invention is to provide novel and effective means for collecting, associating and folding sheets fed from different sources ofsupply without the use of turning bars or formers, and without causing the sheets to'oifset or smut.
A further object is to provide novel means whereby a collected and associated group of main andv multi-insert sheets may be divided longitudinally of the travel of the sheets into two groups of main and insert sheets, the said two groups then combined and acover sheet associated therewith and the complete product subjected to stitching and folding operations and finally deliveried at a predetermined point.
This invention consists more particularly in certain improvements in sheet collecting, associating and folding machines whereby a plurality of sheets may be cut from the main web, collected and then associated with a sheet fed from an extra source of sheet supply such as an insert sheet, the so assou 2 illustrates the machine in sideelevation,

The main web is denoted by 1 and the two sources of eXtra sheet supply by 2 and 3. The source 2 is'arranged for feeding in multi-insert sheets and lthe source 3 is arranged for feeding in cover sheets.
The main web is fed to the coacting rotary transverse cutters 4 and 5 by the feed rollers, pulleys and tapes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. The main sheet transfer cylinder is denoted by l1, its two sets of grippers by 12, 13, the shaft by 14. Guides 15, 16, are arranged to direct the sheets from the rotarycutters 4, 5, to the main sheet transfer cylinder 11 and the disks 17 mounted on the shaft 18 serve to direct the advance edges of the sheets into engagement with the grippers 12 and 1 3 on the said cylinder'.
The multi-insert sheet transfer cylinder is denoted by 19, its set of grippers by- 20, and its shaft bv 21. A. sheet stop 22 is arranged to coact with the multi-insert sheet transfer cylinder 19. The sheet collecting cylinder is denoted by 23, its three sets of grippers by 24, 25, 26, and its shaft by 27. The delivery cylinder'is denoted byf28, its set of grippers by 29 and its shaft by 30.

Spring pressed rollers 33, 34, are arranged to coact with the collecting cylinder 23, spring pressed roller-S35, 36,. are arranged to coact with the delivery cylinder 28 and spring pressed rollers 37 are arranged to coact with the 4transfer cylinder 19, for holding the sheets on their respective cylinders during their passa-ge through this part of the machine.
The table for receiving the two groups of main and insert sheetsfrom the delivery cylinder 28 isdenoted by 38. The two groups of sheets are taken from the table 38 in opposite directions in paths transverse to the previous travel of the sheets by the sets of grippers 39 and 40 of the cylinders 41 and 42,the shafts of which cylinders are denoted by 43 and 44. The cover sheet transfer cylinder is denoted by 45, its set of grippers by 46 and its shaft by 47.` A sheet stop 48 is arranged to coact with the cylinder 45. The cover sheet is associated with the group of sheets taken off the table by the cylinder 4 1 and the other group of sheets taken from the table 38 by the cylinder 42 is combined with the rst-named group of sheets and cover sheet on the inclined stitcher table, the means for vaccomplishing this result comprising the cylinder 49, its set of grippers 50 and shaft 51, and a cylinder 52, its set of grippers 53 and shaft 54. y
A stitcher mechanism 55 of any 'well known or approved construction may be used for stitching the associated sheets on the table 56. A sheet stop 57 is provided for the stitcher table.
Sets of spring pressed rollers 58,59, 60, and 61, are provided for coacting with the cylinders 45, 41, 49 and 52, respectively,
. for holding the sheets onthe said cylinders during the passage of the sheets through this portion of the machine.
The male folding cylinder is denoted by 62, its set of grippers by 63, tucking blade by 64 and shaft by 65. The female folding cylinder is denoted by 66, its set of folding jaws by 67 and its shaft by 68.
`The sheet delivery is herein shown as comprisin the coacting endless ta e carriers 69, 70, the dropper delivery 1 and the endless delivery carrier 72. The tapes 69 pass around the cylinder 66 and the pulleys 73 on theshaft 74. The tapes 70 pass around the ulleys 75 on the shaft 76 and the pulleys 7 dropper mechanism 71 shown herein is of the type shown in United States Letters Patent No. 738778, dated September 1,5, 1903. The tapes 72 of the endless delivery carrier pass around the pulleys 79 on the shaft 80 and the pulleys 81 on the shaft 82.

The slitter shaft 32 is driven from the delivery cylinder shaft 30 through the gears 93, 94. The collecting cylinder shaft 27 is driven from the delivery cylinder shaft 30 through the gears 93, 95. The insert sheet transfer cylinder shaft 21 is driven from the collecting cylinder shaft 27 through the gears 95, 96. The cam shaft 97 is driven from the shaft 21 through the gears 98, 99. The transfer cylinder shaft 14 is driven from the shaft 27 through the gears 95, 100. The tucking disk shaft 18 is driven from the shaft 14 through the gears 100, 101.
One of the rotary cutters, inthe present instance the rotary cutter 5, is driven from the'shaft 14 through the, gears 100, 102, 103. The cutters 4 and 5 are geared together through the pairs of gears 104, 105, 106, 107.
vThe web feeding mechanism is driven through the train of gears 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, 114.
The cylinder shaft 54 is driven from the main drive shaft 83 through the gears 115, 116. The shaft 44 is driven from theA shaft 54 through the gears 117, 118. The shaft 51 is driven from the shaft 54 through the gears 117, 119, and the shaft 43 is driven from the shaft 51 through the gears 119, 120. The cover sheet transfer cylinder shaft 47 is driven from the shaft 43 through the gears 120, 121, and the cam shaft 122 is driven from the shaft 47 through the gears 123, 124. The shaft 125 is driven from the shaft 51 through the train of gears-126, 127, 128.
The stitcher drive includes the bevel gears 129, 130, on the shaft 125, which mesh with the bevel gears 131, 132, on stud shafts, which are connected with the stitcher shafts by the elliptic gears 133, 134, and 135, 136, respectively, so that the movement of the stitchers is accelerated during the staple driving and clenching operation, thereby reducing the time required for this operation to a minimum and increasing the time for ysubsequent operations.
The female folding cylinder shaft 68 is driven from the shaft 54 through the gears 117, 137, 138. The male foldlng cylinder shaft 65 is driven from the shaft 68 through the gears 138, 139. The cam shaft 140 is driven from the shaft 65 through the gears 141, 142. The dropper delivery shaft 143 is driven from the cam shaft 140 through the gears 142, 144, 145. y
The shaft 74 of the tape carrier 69 is driven from the shaft 68 through the gears 138, 146, 147. The-'shaft 78 of the tape carrier 70 is driven from the shaft 68 through" the gears 138, 148.
The delivery carrier 72 is driven step by step from the cam shaft 140 through the pawl and ratchet and crank and pitman connections 149, 150, 151, 152.-
The several cam mechanisms vare constructed, arranged and operated as follows: A fixed cam 153 is arranged to open the sets of grippers 12 and 13 on the main sheet transfer cylinder 11 for receiving the sheets cut from the main web and a fixed cam 154 is arranged to open the said grippers at the proper times for transferring the sheets to the ,grippers 2 4, 25 and 26, on the collecting cylinder 23. A fixed cam 155 is arranged in position to successively open the grippers 24,25, y26, to receive the sheets from the grippers 12 and 13 of the transfer cylinder 11. A'movable cam 156, controlled by a cam -157 on the shaft 97 is arranged to open the grippers 24, 25, 26, of the collecting cylinder every one and one-third revolutions of said insert sheets to the grippers 29 on the def' livery cylinder 28. A fixed cam 160 is arranged to open the grippers 29 on the cylinder 28 at the proper time to deliver-the separated groups of main and insert sheets onto the table 38 and keep the grippers open to receive the collected and associated main and multi-insert sheets from the collecting cylinder 23.
The-grippers 20 on the multi-insert sheet transfer cylinder 19 are opened every second revolution of said cylinder to receive a multi-insert sheet from the source 2, by the following cam `mechanism: A tumbler cam 161 on the shaft ofthe grippers 20 engages the tumbler pins 162, 163, every second revolution of the cylinder 19 for opening the grippers to receive the sheet and closing the grippers on the advance edge of the sheet. These pins 162, 163, aremoved into and out of their operative position by the yoke 164, lever 1 65 andcam 166.

These grippers 46 are opened every second revolution of the said cylinder to transfer the cover sheet to the grippers 39 on the cylinder 41 by providing a `movable cam- 179 which is brought into andv out of operative position by the cam 180 on the shaft 122.
The cover sheet stop 48 is opened every second revolution of the cylinder 45 to permit lthe grippers 46 to grasp the advance edge of a cover sheet, the mechanism for opening said sheet stop including a cam -181 011 the shaft 122 and its connections 182, '193, and 184.
A fixed cam 185 is arranged to control the opening and closing of the grippers 39 on the cylinder 41 for receiving the cover sheet from the grippers 46 on the cylinder 45. The closing of these'grippers 39 on one group of sheets on the table 38 for conveying them away therefrom and the opening of these grippers 39 for transferring them to the grippers. 50 of the cylinder 49 together with the cover sheet is accomplished by means of the following cam mechanism: A tumbler cam 186 on the shaft of the grippers 39 engages the fixed tumbler pin 187 los for closing the grippers and the fixed tumbler pin 188 for openingthe grippers. The grippers 40 on the cylinder 42 are closed upon the other group of sheets on -the table 38 'to convey them away therefrom and are opened to transfer the group'of sheets to the cylinder 52 as follows: A tumbler cam,
189 on the shaft of the grippers 40 is arranged to engage a fixed tumbler pin 190 for closing the grippers on the group of sheets and a fixed tumbler pin 191 for opening the grippers to release the sheets.
A fixed cam 192 is arranged in position to open the grippers 5 3 on the cylinder 52 to receive the group of sheets from the cylinder 42. A fixed cam 193 is arranged' to open the grippers 53 at the proper time to deliver the group of sheets onto the stitcher table 56 together with the group of sheets delivered to the stitcher table by the cylinder 49. A fixed cam 194 is arranged to open the grippers 50 of the cylinder 49 to receive the group of sheets from the grippers 39 of the cylinder 41. A fixed cam 195 is arranged in position to open these grippers 50 at the proper time to deliver the group of sheets onto the stitcher table 56 together with the group of 'sheets delivered from the cylinder 52.
The sheet stop 57 for the stitcher table 56 is open for transferring the control of the stitched group of sheets to the grippers 63 on the male folding cylinder 62 by means of a cam 196 on the shaft 140-and its connections 197, 198.
The grippers 63 of the male folding cylinder 62 are opened to receive the group of stitched sheets from the stitcher tablel and closed on said group by the following tumbler cam mechanism arranged to operate every second revolution of the cylinder 62: The shaft of the grippers 63 is provided with a tumbler cam 199y which is arranged to engage the tumbler pin 200 for closing the grippers and the tumbler pin 201 for opening the grippers. These pins are thrown into and out of their operative position by the yoke 202, lever 203, and c am 204, on the shaft 140. The grippers 63 are opened to release the advance edge of the group of sheets to permit the folding ofil of said group when the tumbler cam mechanism is out of operation, by providing an adjustable stationary cam 211 which engages the stud or roller 212 on the arm 213 of the shaft of the grippers 63.
The movement of the ioating tucking blade 64 on the cylinder 62 is controlled by the cam 205, lever 206, and its stud or roller 207. The floating movement of the folding jaws 67 on the cylinder 66 is controlled by a cam 208 on the shaft 68. is arranged in position to open the folding jaws at the time of the folding operation and a fixed cam 210 is providedfor opening the folding jaws to deliver the folded group of sheets or signature between the carriers 69, 70, to be transferred by them t0 the proper delivery mechanism 71.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The main web is fed down between the rotary cutters 4 and 5 Where it is cut transversely into sheets which, in the present instance, are double width sheets, the guides 15, 16, directing these sheets successively to the grippers 12, 13,on the transfer cylinder 11. The sheets are transferred successively from the grippers 12, 13, to the successive grippers 24, 25, 26, on the collecting cylinder 23. In the arrangement of the parts herein shown, each of the grippers on the cylinder 23 collects a group of four main sheets. As each set of grippers on the collectingcylinder collects its complement of main sheets, an insert sheet which, in the present instance is a double width insert sheet, is transferred by the grippers 20 on the cylinder 19 to its coacting set of grippers on the collecting A fiXed cam 209 cylinder 23. Each associated group of main and insert sheets is then transferred to the delivery cylinder grippers 29. The group of main and insert sheets is then separated longitudinally by the slitter 31 into two groups. These two groups are delivered by the grippers 39 onto the table 38. These two groups of sheets are then moved in opposite directions transverse to the former path of the sheets and they are finally combined on the stitcher table 56 together with a cover sheet, as follows: One group of sheets is taken by the rippers 40 on the cylinder 42 and is trans erred therefrom to the grippers 53 on the cylinder 52. The cylinder 52 then delivers this group of sheets onto the stitcher table 56. At the same time, the other roup of sheets on the table 38 is taken by t e grippers 39 on the cylinder 41 and as these grippers 39 come opposite the grippers 46 on the cylinder 45 a cover sheet is transferred from the grippers 46 to thefgrippers 39. The group of Sheets is then transferred from the grippers 39 on the cylinder 41to the grippers 50 on the cylinder-49 and this cylinder 49 delivers the group of sheets onto the stitcher table 56 at the same time that the first described group of sheets from the table 38 is being delivered onto the stitcher table. These combined groups of sheets, together with the insert and cover sheets, are then sub'- jected to the stitching operation, while the movement of the sheets is arrested by the stop 57. The stop 57 is then raised and the stitched sheets or signature is taken by the grippers 63 on the cylinder 62 and folded ofi along the line of stitches by the coaction of the tucking blade 64 on the cylinder 62 with the folding jaws 67 onI the cylinder 66. The stitched and foldedv signature is then transferred by the delivery carriers 69, 70, to the drop delivery mechanism 71 and therefrom onto the delivery carrier 72.
It is evident that changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but

In a machine of the character described, a sheet receiving table, a collecting cylinder arranged to collect 'a group of main sheets thereon and associatean extra sheet therewith, a delivery cylinder arranged to take the collected and associated group from the collecting cylinder and a slitter arranged to coact with said delivery cylinder to divide the group of sheets on the delivery cylinder into a plurality of groups, said delivery cylinder being arranged to deposit sheets on said table.
