Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN WIESENFELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fenders of the class which are attached to vehicles, and project from the front ends in such a manner, as to prevent the body or person presented in front of an approaching vehicle, from being carried beneath the wheels thereof.
The invention consists in the novel construction of a revoluble cushioned lifting and directing roller and a cushioned inclined bed adapted to receive a body directed thereon by the roller. It also includes cushioned guards extending on either side of the roller and receiving incline, and including within them the driving means, by which the roller is rotated, and also details of construction which will be more fully ex plained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation and partial section. Fig. 2 is a plan and partial section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the elastic roller.
The vehicle A may be of any character, either a car runningupon rails or upon a road surface. Suitably supported and projecting from the front of the vehicle are two hollow, box like structures 2, the upper surfaces of which may be inclined from the car body downward to near the rails or surface upon which the vehicle is moving, and the lower edges are just clear of said surface, so that the structures 2 have a triangular shape inside elevation. They are located outside of the line of travel of the vehicle wheels and between them extended a similarly inclined platform 3. The top of said platform and the top and outer side structures are cushioned with some desirable elastic or flexible material padded to such an extent as to prevent injury to one falling upon the incline, or being struck by the sides. Across the front lower edge of the inclined platform, is journaled a shaft 4, having fixed to it sprocket wheels 5 from which driving connection is made with gear wheels or sprockets 6 upon the car axles, through intermediate gear 7 which will cause the shaft 4: to turn in the opposite di rection from the car wheels. This shaft is surrounded by spiral springs of which there may be a plurality concentrically disposed and extending from end to end of the shaft and supported by bearing disks fixed upon the shaft 4;. These springs are inclosed by a heavy cushioning material 8, so that any body in the line of travel of the vehicle will be first struck by this cushioned roller, if directly in front, and will be thrown, or carried by its revolution upon the inclined cushioned platform directly in the rear and between the roller and the car front. The side cushioned structures will strike any body, not directly in front, a reduced and softened blow and will throw it beyond the line of travel of the wheels. These side structures being hollow serve to protect and cover the chainsor roller driving members, so that they will not be an element of danger to persons in close proximity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A vehicle guard and fender including cushioned side structures extending forwardly outside the lines of travel of the vehicle wheels, and having an interior housing space between the side members, and inclined cushioned apron extending between said structures and forward from the ve hicle, a cushioned roller formed of concentric spiral springs extending from end to end of the apron front, and means to reversely revolve said roller, connected with the vehicle axle and extending through the housings.
