GOLLAISIBLE LIFE-BOAT `AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 29, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN ROBERTSON MUNN and GEORGE MAGLAREN, subjects of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Life-Boats and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bulwarks for collapsible lifeboats or the like and it consists in a construction comprising substan` tia-ily plane mid portions adapted to fold inwardly in relation to the boat, and end portions accommodated in said mid portion or portions when the lifeboat is collapsed and slidable endwise relatively thereto when the lifeboat is to be launched, said end portions being of such formation and (or) material that they may be bent to conform to the contour of the boat, but will not be liable to be formed transversely.
A bulwark embodying the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a fore and aft section showing the bulwark extended. Fig. 2 a plan view and Fig. 3 a thwartship section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 denotes the mid portions of the bulwark which are hinged at 2 to fold inwardly as shown in Fig. 3. The mid portions 1 are formed with recesses and grooves to receive the end portions 4, such end portions being slidable in relation to the mid portions so as to form extensions serving to bridge the gaps between the mid portions and the stems 5 of the boat. The said end portions 4 are iieXi ble so that they may be bent to conform to the contour of the boat. The end portions i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915. serial No. 24,714.
the same purpose. To insure that the bulwark shall be water-tight, the ends of the said end portions 4 are adapted to enter re` cesses in the stems 5 which latter are capable of folding inwardly. The upper and the lower edges of the end portions 4 are guided in grooves, the upper edges engaging recesses in movable gunwales 6 and the lower edges engaging recesses in fixed guides 7.
It is to be understood that the invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the precise construction shown nor to any construction by means of which the invention may be carried into effect, since many changes may be made without departure from the essence of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
l/Ve claim In a collapsible lifeboat or the like, a bulwark comprising, in combination, hinged mid portions and end portions adapted to be accommodated in said mid portions and slidable endwise relatively thereto, said end portions being capable of assuming a curvature in conformity with the contour of the boat, and of resisting stresses tending to deform the same in transverse direction, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
