To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAomaTY KRYozA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pellston, in the county of Emmet and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mail boxes.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a mail box having a push button actuated guard for the mail depositing slot of the box whereby the slot may be maintained normally closed but readily openable when desired for use.

A further object is to provide the entrance slot of a mail box with a pivoted receiver for the initial reception of the mail, the receiver being provided with an apron portion adapted to project through and to close the said slot, the said receiver being operated in both directions by push button means.

A still further object is to provide a pivoted member adjacent the entrance slot of a mail box which is adapted to close the slot when the mail is deposited in the collection receptacle,'the said member also affording a serviceable means for preventing the unauthorized removing of any of the mail matter from the box.

With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawings and set forth in the appended claim.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a mail box provided with the present device.

Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof taken upon line 11-11 of Fig. 1, with the mail slot closed. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view with the mail slot open. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane of the push button casing of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an inverted perspective view of the combined closure and receiving member partially broken away, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken upon line Vl-VI of Fig. 3.

Referring more in detail to the drawings the mail box 10 of substantially the uniform appearance is provided having a hinged door 11 in one end thereof for extracting the mail matter, while the forward wall 12 of the box is provided with a mail entrance slot 13. A hollow casing 14: is provided of substantially oval shape in cross section and having its front portion cut-away as at 15 to allow the entrance of mail matter into the receiving chamber 16 of the casing. The said casing has a forwardly projecting curved apron 17 above the cutaway portion 15 and beneath which apron the mail matter is pushed into the chamber 16. Oppositely positioned lugs 18 are provided on the inner face of the apron '17 and through which a rod 19 is secured, which rod has its opposite ends trunnioned into sockets 20 of the wall 12 for pivotally mounting the casing 14 upon the box. The apron 17 is adapted to project through the slot 13 and to entirely close the slot as shown in Fig. 2 by dotted lines when the casing is tilted at one extreme of its movement, while the opening in the casing is freely accessible beneath the apron 17 when the casing is positioned at the other extreme as shown in Fig. 3 and at which latter named time the lower and end edges 21 and 22 respectively of the casing are in flat engagement with the inner face of the wall 12.

A means for manually operating the casing 14 upon its pivot rod 19 is provided in the form of push button actuating means and consists of the herein-below described mechanism whereby the upper push button 23 will open the mail slot while the lower button 24 closes the same.

A curved lever 25 is provided with a central longitudinal slot 26 and is pivotally mounted to the adjacent end wall 27 of the box by means of a post 28, while an operative engagement is had with the casing 14 by means of a roller 29 freely positioned in the lever slot 26 and journaled upon a stub shaft 80 secured to the adjacent end 31 of the easing. A guide bracket 36 is mounted upon the inner face of the end wall 27 and is provided with slots 32 one above the other and through which the rods 33 and 341: respectively of the push buttons 23 and 24: slidably extend while the outer ends of the said rods are slidably mounted in similar slots 35 in the front wall 12 of the box. The outer end of the lever 25 has a shiftable pivotal connection with the rod 34 by means of a pin 37 carried by the said rod and extending through a slot 38 of the said lever end. The upper rod 33 is operatively connected to the lower rod by means of a link 39 which is centrally pivoted to the box end 27 by means of a post 4-0 while the said link is provided with longitudinal slots tl adjacent its opposite ends for slidably receiving similar rollers 42 of spindles 43 and 44 mounted respectively upon the rods 33 and 34.

which housing is secured to the box wall 12 by the rivets l6 at one side of the entrance slot 13. The roof 47 of the box is preferably gabled for affording protection from the a weather, while the apron 17 has an outer 1 curved surface and at all times shields the i i with the lever slot 26 to the opposite extreme of its movement and closed as shown in Fig. 2. When so positioned, an inward pressure upon the push button 23 forces inwardly its rod 33 thus shifting the link 39 which longitudinally moves the rod 34: which movement returns the lever 25 as well as the casing 14 0 its original position with the entrance slot open as shown in Fig. 3. It will of course be noted that when the slot is open, the mail it matter is readily inserted into the chamber 16 of the casing and that a pressure being then exerted upon the pushbutton 24, the mail is deposited into the lower deposit receptacle portion of the box through the cutawav portionofthe casing which portion is thenpositioned lower-most of the casing and entirely within the box as best shown in Fig. 2 and at which time the apron lip 48 elngages exteriorly of the lower edge of the s ot.

\Vhile the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

lVhat I claim as new is A mail box comprising in combination with a box having a mail entrance slot therein, a mailreceiving and slot protectin member pivoted within the said slot, a burved operating lever pivoted within the said box and having a longitudinal slot-adjacent one end thereof, a roller carried by the said member and slidably mounted within the said slot, push rods operatively connected to the said lever and slidably carried by the said box and having outer ends projecting exteriorly of the box, a push button secured to the outer ends of each of the said rods and a protecting housing carried by the box and surrounding the said push buttons and rod ends. i.
