ADJUSTABLE HOE.
at \Veimar, in the county of Colorado-and.
State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Hoe, of which the following is a specification. I
' The invention relates to improvements in hoes.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of hoes and to provide a simple, practical, andinexpensive hoe, of strong and durable construction, equipped with an adjustable blade adapted to be arrangedto form either a chopping hoe or a scufide hoe, and capable, when arranged as a chopping hoe, f adjustment to set the blade at different a gles to suit any kind of soil.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists inithe construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim appended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion,= size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departingfrom the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hoe constructed in accordance with this-invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lioe. Fig. 4L is a side elevation of, the hoe, the blade being arj ranged to form a'scuflie hoe.
is illustrated the preferred embodiment of Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in. all the figures ofthe the invention, 1 designates a hoe blade provided with anoattaching bracket or flange 2 consisting of a plate'or piece split at the outer portion and bent at right angles in opposite directions to form laterally projecting attaching lugs or ears 3. The laterally projecting lugs 3, which are fitted against the rear face of the hoe blade 1, are secured to the same by rivets 4: or other suitable fastening devices at the upper portion of the hoe blade when the latter is arranged to form a chopping hoe. The outer side edge of the projecting flange 2 is arranged con- Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nted July 27, 19315., Application filed Jui 18, 1914'. serial No. 851,790.
tiguous to the upper edge of the hoe blade, and a handle 5, which is provided with a metallic shank or stem 6, is pivotally connected to the flange 2 by a rivet 7 orother suitable fastening device to permit the blade to be arranged at different angles when used as a chopping hoe, and also to be adjusted to a position-in substantial alinement or parallelism with the plane of the handle to form a scufiie hoe, as illustrated in Fig. 4E of'the drawing. I
The shank 6, which is preferably squared, has a slight longitudinal curve, and its outer portion is split or bifurcated to provide a slot or opening 8 to receive the fiangeof. the hoe blade. The flange-extends into the slot or opening and is adjustably securedto the shank by means of a pivot hook 9 and asplit spring key 10, The hook 9, which is arranged at the upper edge or face of the shank when-the blade is adjusted to form a chopping hoe, is pivotedat theinn'er end of its shank to the shank 6 of the handle by a rivet 11 or other suitable fastening device.
adapted to extend across -the slot or opening 8 and engage one of the arcuate, series of perforations 13 at the terminal portion of the flange 2. The flange 2 may be pro- -vided with any number of perforations to secure the desired angular adjustment of the hoe blade, and the shank is provided with a transverse perforation 14 extending through both sides of the bifurcated outer portion of the shank and adapted to aline with the perforations 13 and receive the key 10. The
What is claimed is A hoe of the class described including a hoe blade, a relatively narrow flange projecting fromthe hoe blade and provided with an inner perforation and having an outer arcuate series of perforations, a handle provided with a shank bifurcated to receive the flange and pivoted to the same,
. said shank having inner and outer perforations, the outer perforation being adapted to register with the inner perforation of the flange when the blade is arranged to form a scuflie hoe, a key carried by the shank and adapted to engage the said registering er- 1 forations, and a hook pivotally mounte on the shank and arranged to engage the perforations of the arcuate series for securing the blade at different angles to the handle. said key being also adapted to be arranged in the mner perforation of the shank and one of the arcuate series of perforations of glliedflange in the angular ad ustment of the a e. a In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
