GEORGE E. PANCOAST, 015 NEW YORK, N. Y.
WEB-PRINTING MACHINE.
Application. filed March 9, 1915.
To all whom it may ('01? earn Be it known that l, Gnome E. Pincoas'r, a citizen oil the United States, residing at New York city, county of Kings, and State of New York, hrn'einvented certain new and useful Improvements in ll 'cbilrinting Machines, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved unit construction for rotary web printing machines, by which the press frame and printing mechanisms shall be embodied in small and co venient units, suitable for assembling to produce machines of any desired capacity, so that the units may be kept in stock and assembled to fill orders for machines, according to the size and capacity required.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, I have shown for purpose of illustration, :1 web printing machine having six couples and embodying the invention in a preferred form, and this construction will now be described in detail and the features forming the invention then specifically pointed out in the claims.
The drawing is a diagrammatic side elevation of a machine, shown as having two sets of priming couples, each set having three couples. A. A, A and B ll B arranged one above the other, and with the cylinders of the two sets parallel and in tracking relation, the two cylinders of each couple preferably being in the same horizontal planes, and the respective couples of the two sets also in line horizontally. The couples preferably are driven, as shown, by vertical shaft-s a, 6, each carrying a pair of bevel gears 10, for each couple, which gears are adjustable independently of each other, so that either may engage a bevel gear 11, on the design cylinder, so as to drive the couples in either directi: 1 for perfecting or color printing. The hating mechanisms C for the respective couples may be of any suitable construction, but, preferably are interchangeable duplicates and arranged so as to be movable toward and from the cylinders in the spaces between the frame parts for convenient plating of the design cylinders, cleaning the inking mechanism, etc, and with two sets of distributing and form 5 rolls, as shown, to secure an even distribution of ink. on rotation of the printing cvl- Specification of Letters Patent.

inders in either direction. The impressict cylinders are prc'lt'erably mounted in adjust able bearings, as indicated in connection with. couple A so that cylinders of different sizes can be used in the difi'erent couples for different size pages, while the design cylinders have lixed centers so that the drive isnot affected by the change in size of the cylinders and the inking mechanism preferably has the large form rolls 12 adjustable around their distributing cylinders and toward and from the design cylinders so as to accommodate design cylinders of difler ent sizes, in addition to the adjustability of the entire inking mechanism. Theinking mechanisms are shown in inking position on couples A A A and as withdrawn from inking position and moved away from the cylinders in connection with couples B 13 B".
As illustrated, the press is used forlperfecting three webs, each web being perfected by the couples of the two sets in line with each other. the three webs :11, 1/, a be ing led from web rolls X, Y, Z, mounted in brackets 13 on the press frame, and these webs may be associated and delivered in any suitable manner at the other end of the press frame, a transverse former D, cutting and folding cylinders E, and fly 1 being indicated.
The machine. so far as above described, is that of my prior application No, 631,153, filed June 3, 1911, (now Letters Patent No. 1,138.73'2), and the present invention relates especially to the improved unit construction. In, this construction, the frame on each side of the press is made up of units, each provided with bearings for a single couple, and formedas interchangeable duplicates. A single vertical standard 14 carries the bearings for the couple, and is formed integrally with a horizo tal bar 15 and another vertical standard 1 the standards 1st and 16 being of such height as to afford proper space vertically for the printing cylinders and inking mechanism, and the standards 14 and 16 being supported so as to leave an open space for the inking mechanism, including space for the with drawal oi": the latter from the design cylinders and convenient access to the design cylinders and inking mechanisms. The press units therefore are U form, with one of the vertical standards of the U carrying the bearings for the design and impression a g 1,1a7,s12
cylinders ofthe printingcouple, and the horizontal bars forming the support for inking mechanism.
It will be understood that the frame on the oppositeside of the machine from that shown in the drawing is made up of frame units similar to those shown in the drawing, made left hand instead of right hand, and that the units of the two sets of couples are interchangeable duplicates, but placed on opposite sides of the press in assembling the two sets. These press units vobviously may be built up in any number desired, and arranged in any desired manner so as to pro duce presses of widely different size and arrangement. As shown, these units are built up into a six couple press; the lower units being mounted on base plate 17 and the upper units mounted successively upon each other and tied together by bars 18 between the two sets of couples, so as to leave an; open space between the two sets for access to the impression cylinders.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A rotary web printing machine including in combination, a plurality of printing couples vertically arranged one above the other in the same vertical planes and with their cylinders parallel and in tracking relation, and the frame structure supporting the couples consisting of superposed frame units, each unit consisting of a vertical standard carrying a single printing couple,
a horizontal bar adaptedto support inking mechanism, and a vertical standard separated from the standard carrying the printing couple sufficiently to' provide space for inking mechanism and access thereto, said standards and horizontal bar forming a U shaped frame unit. a
2. A rotary web printing machine includin in combination, a plurality of sets of printing couples vertically arranged side by side, with an open space between them and with their cylinders parallel and in tracking relation, the impression and design cylinders of each couple being in the same hOIlzontal planes, and the frame structure supporting the couples consisting of superposed frame units, each unit consisting of a vertical standard carrying a single printing conple, a horizontal bar adapted to support inking mechanism, and a vertical standard separated from the standard carrying the printing couple sniliciently to provide space for inking mechanism and access thereto, said standards and horizontal bar forming a U shaped frame unit.
3. A web printing machine frame section formed of a vertical standard carrying bearings in the same horizontal plane for a single printing couple, a vertical standard form an open space for inking mechanism and access thereto, and a horizontal bar connecting the corresponding ends of the two standards and adapted to form a support for inkin mechanism, said standards and horizontal bar forming an integral U shaped frame unit.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ononen E. PANCOAST.
