FIRE-EXTINGUISHER 2b all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that 1, AUGUST C. Snnonn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the countyof St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention is an improved automatic chemical sprinkler and fire alarm for'extinguishingfires in buildings and at the the object of an improved.
same time sounding an alarm, theinvention being to provide apparatus of this class which is cheap and simple, is automatic in operation, ,which requi'ies little or no attention and which is eihcient and thoroughly practical in use.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arran ement of devices hereinafter described an claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View ofan automatic sprinkler and fire alarm constructed in ac cordance with my invention, showing the acid bottle and holder in-normal position in full lines and in .overturned, operating position in dotted lines. Fig.2 is a'detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line ar4 of Fig. 1. v
Referrin ,to the form of my invention e drawing a suitable-tank-l is provided which in practice contains the usual soda solution. This tank has a cap'2 at its upper end. .A delivery pipe 3 leads from the bottom of the tank to a sprinkler 4 Any suitable number of sprinklers may be employed at different points and con-' nected to the said, includes a fusible releasing element 5. A screen 6 is provided in the bottom of the tank and at theintake of the pipe 3. An electric enunciator 7 or other translating device is in circuit with a battery 8 and one of the conductors 9 is normally broken by a movable contact device 10 which is connected by a suitable cord or wire 11 to the releasing element of the sprinkler head. When the said releasing element is fused or otherwise released it relaxes tension on the cord 11 and thereupon the circuit'is closed at 10 and the alarm -sounded.

i A pair of spaced bracket arms 12 are an i and connected to the ranged in the tank wall thereof and provided at their inner ends with bearings 13 which are engaged by the trunnions 14 of a bottle holder 15. This bottle holder is here shown as cylindrical in provided with an opening 16 in the bottom and as having spaced holder arms 17 at its upper end which are inturned toward one another. The trunnions 14 or pivots of the'bottle holder are to one side of the center of the bottle holder and on the bottle holder, near its bottle holder is released by the means and hereinafter stated will cause the bottle,
holder to be overturned and reversely arranged so that its upper end will be lowermost.
A bottleor other container 19 for acid is arranged in the holder 15 and floats therein on the soda solution in the tank and bolder andjthe mouth 20 of the acid bottle or container isclosed by afixed stopper 21 which is held by an arm 22. A sufiicient quantity of the solution is maintained in the tank to keep the acid bottle raised so that its mouth is engaged and closed by the stopper 21 and this stopper also serves to hold the bottie holder in upright position and against the counter-balancing tendency of the weight 18. When the sprinkler head is opened by 5 or otherwise flow the fusing of he alarm level to be lowered in the tank 1 and hence the acid bottle 19 becomes lowered and its mouth disengaged from the stopper 21, whereupon the weight 18 overturns the holder 15 and the acid. bottle andcauses the contents of the acid bottle to be discharged intothe solution in the tank thereby generating gas and dis charging the same and the liquid from the sprinkler head andon the fire. Having thus described my invention I claim I In apparatus of the class described, a tank having normally closed discharge means, a pivotally mounted holder in the tank, an
acid container arranged to float in the holder "and having a discharge opening at its upper end, a stopper against which the discharge In. testimony whereof I affix my signature opening is 11 161 by the buoyancy of the acid in presence of two witnesses. container and means to cause the holder and AUGUST 0.
