Be it known that I, MAURICE B. BRAND, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in .the county Of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y p.

My invention relates to bottle. holders and more particularly to receptacles designed for guiding a single bottle when inserted invv a receptacle of ample size for receiving a number' of milk bottles, so as to maintain the said bottle in operative relation to the' locking mechanism.

Other objects will be apparent from the following specification and from the accom-l panying drawings, in which:

In the embodiment` of the drawings, the

milk bottle holder of my invention coni-l prises a sheet metal casingl of substantially oval horizontal section secured to abase 2, which base is shown in the drawings as being of wood. Mounted upon the casing 1 near the upper or normally open end thereof is a pivot 3 forming the connec tion between the said casing and a cover 4 the said cover being preferably equipped with flanges 5 depending along the sides of the casing 1. Consequently, when the cover is thereafter closed, 'the inclined tipof the hook 9 of the latched member 6 will :torce the latched member back somewhat while the cover is being closed, after which the spring 7 will return the member 6 to the position shown in Fig. -l, thereby causing the hook 9 to engage the bight 10 and to lock the cover against opening. It will be obvious that when the cover is thus locked, the engagement of the lower end of the bottle with the stem 17 ot the' movable member will continuously hold the bight or loop end of the said member in operative relation to the hook of the latch member. Consequently, it a spring lock is used, the cover cannot be opened until the lock is suitably manipulated to Arelease the said latch, after which the latter may be loosely pressed inward through the aid of a projecting portion 19, so as to release its engagement with the movable member and permit the cover to be opened for withdrawing the bottles from the receptacle.

Wvhen the receptacle is to be used for storing more than one bottle, I preferably provide partition members 2O and 21 engaging suitable supports 22 secured to the sides of the casing, which partition members will prevent each bottle from sliding longitudinally of the casing, thereby maintaining the bottle opposite the stem 17 in proper alinement or operative relation to the latter. In the drawings, I have shown the pivot 3 as extending through a portion of the cover atording a hood for the pivot so asto prevent the insertion of a simple tool at the pivot for prying off the cover. I-Iowever, I do not wish to be limited either to this or other details oi the construction herein disclosed, it being evident that the same might be varied in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. A bottle holder comprising va receptacle having relatively rigid vertical sides, a movable cover therefor, and means for locking the cover in closing position; said means comprising a latch carried by the cover, a member pivoted upon one of said sides and presenting an upper end portion adapted to be engaged by said vlatch when said member is in one position, and to clear said latch whensaid vmember is in another position; said member also equipped with a lower portion normally depending at anangle to the side to which the member is pivoted, the said angular disposition of the last named portion causing the latter to be disposed in the path ot a bottle inserted in the said receptacle, thereby causing the said member to be moved about its pivotal mounting by the insertion of the said bottle in upright position, the angular-ity of the said disposition of the lower portion of the pivoted member being insufficient to cause said portion to'be engaged by the bottle when the latterr is inserted in inverted position.

2. In combination with a milk bottle, a holder comprising a receptacle having relatively rigid sides and open at the top, a movable cover for said receptacle, a latching member movably disposed upon the said cover, a movable member pivotally mounted within the receptacle and presenting an arm disposed in the path of the bottle when the latter is inserted in the receptacle in upright position and equipped with a horizontal portion normally out of engagement with the said latch, the said horizontal portion ot the movable member adapted to be moved into engagement with the said latching member when the said arm is moved out of its normal position; spring means associated with the receptacle and the said movable member for holding the latter in its normal position, and guide means for guiding the bottle in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the said arm of the movable member, the said guide meansl coacting with wall portions of the receptacle to maintain the bottle in operative relation to the said movable member when the said bottle is inserted in the receptacle in an upright position.

3. A bottle holder including a casing having relatively rigid sides, a cover hinged thereto, a movable latch carried by the cover, and a rocking member carried by the casing and cooperating with the latch to lock the cover; said member comprising` a bight disposed adjacent to said latch, and

a pair of Shanks depending from said bight and each equipped with an ott-set, at least one of said shanks having a stem extending beyond the oit-set in the same approximately to the lower end of the casing; bearings carried by the casing and housing parts of the said off-set portions to aii'ord a pivotal support for the said rocking member, and a spring associated with the rocking member and the casing and normally holding the rocking 'member with the bight thereof out of cooperating relation to the said latch; the said stem of the rocking member normally depending at an angle to the adjacent side of the case, said depending portion being outside the path of an inverted bottle inserted in the casing but within the path ot an upright bottle inserted therein.
