OSCAR RAGNAR WIKANDER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
VALVE.
residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Valve, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic valves and its purpose is first to provide a light, simple and reliable plate valve for air compressors, vacuum pumps and the like, a valve with simple and durable elastic closing means, said means tending to close it with a very slight force at low lifts, said force increasing rapidly at higher lifts, thereby effectively cushioning the opening movement of said valve-second, to prevent the sticking of the plate valve on its stem.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section through my improved valve along the line 11-11 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of said valve.
1 is the cylinder wall of an air compressor of any suitable type.
2 is the valve seat, formed with ports 3 for the passage of the air. The seat is prefer ably made integral with or fixed to a conical stem 4 which guides the valve 5. The latter fits neatly around the largest end of said stem, when in closed position, while it is guided loosely on same as soon as it lifts from its seat, thereby preventing any sticking of the valve disk on the stem.
A plurality of thin elastic disks 6, 7, 8 of preferably the same inside and outside diam.- eters as the valve disk are interposed between the valve 5 and its stop 0, which is formed by a heavy washer, held in place by the screw 10. The elastic disks 6, 7 8 are preferably made of steel andiare alternatively straight (7) and curved (6, 8). The latter ones are curved so that their surfaces form fragments of a cylinder.
In the position shown in Fig. 1, the originally straight disk 7 is slightly bent and the curved disks slightly straightened so asto exert a gentle closing force on the valve 5. In its extreme opened position the valve 5 will press both the curved disks 6, 8 flat against the stop 9 and the combined force Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 20, 1915. Application filed September 22, 1914. Serial No. 862,894. I 4
of both will tend to close the valve, thereby exerting a powerful cushioningefi'ect on the opening movement of the valve 5. Instead of the two curved disks a greater number,
separated by straight ones, can of course be used so as to obtain a still more effective cushioning of the valve 5, but the case presented clearly indicates the principle involved.
The curvature of the elastic disks is chosen with regards to their thickness, so as to keep of alternatively straight (7) and curved (6, i
8) thin elastic disks, interposed between said sheet metal plate valve and a stop (9), said thin elastic disks (6, 7 8) acting as a spring tending to close said valve against its seat (2).
2. An air compressor with automatic inlet or outlet valves or both, said valves containing'a sheet metal plate valve (5) a'multitude of alternative straight (7 and curved (6, 8) thin elastic plates, interposed between said sheet metal plate valve (5) and a stop (9), said thin elastic plates (6, 7, 8) acting as a spring tending to close said valve against itsseat (2).
3. An air compressor, with automatic inlet or outlet valves or both, said valves containing a sheet metal plate valve (5), a multitude of alternatingly straight (7 and curved (6, 8) thin'elastic disks, interposed between said metal plate valve (5) and a stop (9), and a tapered guide stem (4:) fit-
