Description

L. S. TEWELL.
Imprbvement in Cultivator-Flows. N0; 114,726 Patented May 9,187 1.

UNrTno STATES PATENT Grinch.
LEONARD S. TEYVELL, OF ELBINSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATOR-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l K4,?26, dated May 9, L371.
To a whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LEONARD S. TEWELL, of Elbiusville, in the county of Bedford, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Hillside- Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, inaking a part of this specification.
The nature of myinvention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow adapted for use both as a right and left hillside-plow.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the salne, Iwill now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my plow.
A represents a beam of suitable dimensions, to the front end of which the team is to be attached in any convenient manner.
On both the upper and lower sides of the beam A are pivoted two metal bars, B B, a suitable distance apart. These bars are pivoted in the center, one bolt securing each upper bar with the corresponding lower bar.
Between the ends of the bars B B, on each side of the center beam, A, is pivoted a plowbeam, 0, the rear end of which is bent outward, as shown, and provided with plowshank D, blade E, and handle G. By the arangement of the pivoted bars B B and plow beams C 0, one on each side of the center bea1n,A, either plow may be brought forward of the other, and thus adapting the machine for use on hillsides, to plow in either direction.
It will be noticed that when the side beams, O G, are moved in such a manner that the bars B B stand at right angles with the center beam, A, the plows will be farther apart than otherwise, and thus the implement may be used as an expanding cultivator when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The curved beams O O and standards D D, with the handles G G, attached to the standards and to the side beams, in combination with the straps B B and center beam, A, constructed and operated as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of April, 1870.
LEONARD S. TEWELL.
