To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, GEQRGECLARK Bron- ARDS, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Berkeley, in the county oflflameda and State of California, have invented-cer tain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Devices for lVater-Closets,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in ventilating devices for waterclosets and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character whereby the vitiated air is efl'ectively and completely drawn off without in any way permitting the surrounding atmosphere to become permeated therewith.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinatfer more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view, partly in top plan and partly in section, illustrating an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 3 is a view in top plan of a gasket employed in connection with my invention as herein disclosed.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a closet of conventional type having a seat portion 2 hinged in a conventional manner to the rear portion or kidney 3 of the closet proper. Rested upon such rear portion or kidney 3 is the forward extremity of a vent 4: provided with laterally directed perforated ears 5 through which suitable anchoring members 6 are adapted to be passed in orderto maintain such vent against displacement, such means being herein shown as also serving to maintain the hinge member 15 for the seat portion 2 against displacement. isiadap'ted toserve for and in a manner which isbelieved to be self-evident and in order to assure an effective engagement between the inner end portion-oftlie vent a andthe seat portion I provide such end port1on of the vent 1 with laterally directed flanges 16 which are adapted to conform to the contour of the contacting face of the seat portion 2 and to contact snugly therewith. I also find it of advantage to have the outer extremity of the vent inclined transversely in order that it may clear the serving pipe P, whereby it will be readily percelved that my improved attachment may be applied in operative position upon a bowl without the necessity of special construction.

The hinged connection between the seat portion 2 and the rear portion or kidney 3 is such as to have the upper surface of the portion 2 substantially flush with the upper surface of the vent 4: when the seat portion 2 is in its normal position, and the rear of the seat portion 2 or that part thereof which intersects the horizontal plane of the vent 1 is provided with a recess 9 adapted to register with the vent 1 and affording communication within the bowl of the closet whereby the vitiated air therein may be caused to pass 03 through the draft tube.

In order that the draft through the tube and the vent 4 will draw oif the vitiated air from all portions within the bowl of the closet, I find it essential that a hermetic seal be effected between the upper edge or rim of the bowl of the closet and the seat portion 2 and the vent 4 rested upon the rear portion or kidney 3 and, as herein accomplished, I position on the upper edge of the bowl 1 a gasket 10 whereby an effective seal is created between such parts.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a ventilating device for water-closets constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which the entire bowl is ventilated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

I claim: As a new article of manufacture, a ventl lating attachment for a closet bowl comprising a tubular body adapted to rest upon the kidney of the bowl and to be placed in communication with the interior of the bowl,

bowl and the vertical flanges being adapted to contact with the adjacent portions of a seat, the opposite end of the attachment being restricted and adapted for communica- 15 tion' with a flue.
