DIFFERENTIAL FEEDING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed June 13, 1912. Serial No. 703,491.
To all whom it may concern): I
Be it known that I, DUDLEY S. SErMoUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook, State of 1 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Differential Feeding Mechanisms, of which the following is a description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing andto the figures of reference marked thereon.-
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in feeding mechanisms for sewing machines, and more especially to feeding mechanisms wherein'two feed dogs are given independent movements, so that the movement of one dog relative to the other may be variedfor securing a differential feed of the material operated upon.
An object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism wherein one feed dog is located infront of the other, and is moved back and forth by mechanism which is positive in its action, andwhich is so constructed that the amount of throw given to the front feed dog may be varied relative to the amount of throw given to the rear feed dog.
A further object of the invention is to provide devices whereby the throw of the forward feed dog may be positively controlled at the will of the operator, and without stopping the stitching mechanism.
These and other objects will in part be obvious, and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention,Figure 1 is afront View of a sewing machine having my improvements applied thereto, certain of the parts being omitted for the sake of clearness; Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe parts underneath the work support; Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine with the work support removed; Fig. 4C is a I vertical sectional view on the line H of Fig. 2; Fig; 5 is averticalsectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the various essential parts of the feeding devices, certain of the members being separated from others, for the sake of more clearly showing the constructionthereof; Fig. 7 is a detail partly in section on the line 77 of Fig. 2; Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the controlling lever for varying the throw of the feed; Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view of the looking dog forholding the controlling lever in various adjusted positions; Fig. 10 is a detail showing a modified form of controlling lever; Fig. 11 is a detail in side elevation of a treadle, which may be used in connection with the controllinglever shown in either Fig. 8 or Fig. 10; and Fig. 12 is a detail in perspective of the retaining plate for auxiliary feed bar.
In the drawings, I have shown the invention applied to a sewing machine which consists of a base plate 1, on which is mounted a work support 2, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. The standard 3 is provided with an overhanging arm 4-, in which reoiprocates the needle bar 5, carrying a needle 6. The needle bar is reciprocated by a needle lever 7, through a link connection 8 with an eccentric on the main shaft 9. Cooperating with the needle beneath the work support is a looper 10, which is vibrated by a link 11 connected with an extension .on the needle lever. 7. The present machine is shown as provided with a trimmer 12, which is so disposed as to trim the fabric adjacent to the line of stitching, and said trimmer consists of toggle members 13, which are vibrated by a link 14:, pivoted to the usual feed-rocker 15, of the machine. These parts are of the usual construction, and have been illustrated merely for the purpose of defining the location of the feeding members forming the subject matter of this invention.
It'will be understood that while I have shown a sewing machine embodying a trimmer and a stitching mechanism, such as shown in the drawings, that the feeding mechanism may be applied to other types of sewing machines.
The feeding mechanism consists of a main feed dog 16, which is rigidly carried by a main feedbar 17. The main feed bar 17 is pivotally supported at 18 by the feed rocker 15. The feed rocker, as herein shown, is pivoted at) 19 to a lug carried by the base plate 1. Said feed rocker is formed with an arm 20, which, as herein shown, is made integral with the members of the feed rocker,
and saidarm is bent so as to lie in a plane ried by the main feed bar.
' which is adjustably mounted in a disk 24,
on the forward end of the main shaft 9.
This crank pin may be adjusted radially of the disk 24, for the purpose of varying the throw of the crank, and thus varying the throw of the main feed rocker. The feed bar is raised and lowered for the purpose of moving the feed dog into and out of contact with the fabric by an eccentric 25, which is mounted on the main shaft 9. The feed bar is provided with a plate 26, which rests on the eccentric, and a bracket 27extends an, derneath the eccentric and engages the lower face thereof, so that as the eccentric turns with the main shaft, the feed bar will be positively raised and lowered.
From the above description, it will be :ap-
parent that as the main shaft rotates, the feed bar will be moved back and forth through the connection with the crank on the forward end of the main shaft, and the feed bar will be raised and lowered through contact with the eccentric 25, also carried by the main shaft.
Cooperating with the main feed dog is an auxiliary feed dog 28. This auxiliary feed dog, as herein shown, is located directly in front of the main feed dog, and the two feed dogs constitute what is known in the art as a tandem differential feed. It will be apparent from Fig. 2 that the main feed dog operates upon the fabric in the rear of the needle 6, while the auxiliary feed dog operates upon the fabric in front thereof. This auxiliary feed dog is carried by an auxiliary feed bar 29. The auxiliary feed bar is provided with a rib 30, which engages a slot 31, in the shank of the auxiliary feed dog, and said shank is adjustably held to the end of the feed bar by a suitable screw. This connection is of the usual construction, and further description is not thought necessary.
A plate 32 is fixed to the under side .of the main feed bar by suitable screws, and projects laterally therefrom, so as to provide a support for the auxiliary feed bar. The upper outer corner of the auxiliary feed bar is cut away or chamfered as at 33. A plate 34; is formed with a downwardly projecting lip 35, and the under face of this plate and lip are shaped to conform to the upper .face, and the chamfered side of theauxiliary feed bar. This plate 34 has upwardly projecting lugs 36, which are perforated, and are held to the main feed bar by screws 37, which pass.
through said lugs 36 into projections 38 car- This plate 34; and the plate 32 form a guideway for the auxiliary feed bar, which holds the same closely against the side of the main feed bar, and at the same time permits the auxiliary feed bar to move longitudinally relative to the main feed bar. All the up and down movements of the main-feed bar will, however, be imparted to theauxiliary feed bar, so that the eccentric 25 which raises and lowers the main feeddog, will raise and lower the auxiliary feed dog in unisonth'erewith.
The auxiliary feed bar at its rear end is formedwith a downwardly projecting arm 39, which is perforated and secured by a The block 41. extends into a segmental slot 42, formed in an arm 43', which is rigidly carried by a shaft l4. The shaft 44 on its outer end is provided with an arm 45, :see Fig. 3. This arm 45 is pivoted to a linktfi, and the other end of the link 46 is pivoted at 47 to the arm "20 forming a part of the main feed rocker. The pivotal connection 4-7 is located adjacent the pivotal connection 21 between the link22 and the arm20. As the free end of the arm 20 is raised and lowered through the crank connection with the main shaft, said pivotal connection 4:7 will also be raised and lowered in substantially vertical direction, and this vertical movement of the pin 4:? "will be transmitted through the link 46 to the shaft ii, and produce oscillations therein.
As the shaft 4A oscillates the arm 43 havincreased. If the block ismoved towardthe axis of the shaft -14, a less throw will be imparted thereto, and in turn a less throw given to the auxiliary feeddog; 'l halve provided means for varyingthe position of the block 41 in the segmental slot which is so constructed that the same may be shifted at the will of the operator.- The link 40 is fixed to a short shaft l8, which is mounted to turn freely in the downwardly projecting arm 39 carried by the auxiliary feed bar. The other end of the shaft carries a fixed arm 49. A
link 50 is pivoted to the free end of the arm 49. The lower end of the link 50 is pivoted to an arm 51, carried by a shaft The sha t 52 1s ournaled in su table bearings carried by the supporting bed 1, and is pref erably extended to a point in rear of the standard 3 of the sewing machine, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A bracket 53 is carried by the supporting bed, and is provided with a journal bearing 54, which supports the rear end of the shaft 52. A controlling arm 55, see Fig. 8, is
rigidly attached to the rear end of the'shaft 52. The bracket 53 is formed with a pro jecting plate 56, which is provided with a segmental slot 57. Stops 58 and 59 are mounted in said slot 57, and are adjustable therein. Said stops are provided with suitable nuts, so that they may be fixed in various adjusted positions. The plate 56 has a notched portion 60. The surface of this notched portion is concentric with the axis ofthe shaft 52. The controlling arm 55 is provided with a housing 61, in which is mounted a spring-controlled locking pin 62, which is adapted to engage the notches in the portion 60 carried by the plate 56. Said pin is forced into the notches by a spring 63.
It will be apparent that the controlling arm will be held in various positions through the engagement of the locking pin with the notches. As this pin is springpressed into the notches, and the end of the pin is rounded, pressure upon the controlling lever will move the same so as to carry the pin from one notch to another. Said controlling lever is provided with an extension arm 64, which is preferably connected by a rod 65 to a suitable. treadle, so that when the treadle is positively moved in either direction, the controlling arm will be raised or lowered in accordance with the direction of movement of the treadle.
hen the controlling armis raised, the shaft 52 will be oscillated in such direction as to lower the outer end of the arm 51, which through the link 50 will draw down on the outer end of thearm 49, oscillating the shaft 48 and moving the block 41 toward the axis of the shaft 44, and thereby decreasing the throw of the auxiliary feed dog. hen the controlling lever is moved in the opposite direction, a reverse movement of the parts will be accomplished, and the throw of the auxiliary feed dog increased.
The locking pin will hold the controlling lever against any movement due to the weight of the treadle, and said controlling lever will be moved from one notch to another only when force is applied to the treadle by the operator. It will be apparent, therefore, that the auxiliary feed bar may be set for various throws, after which no strain will be required on the operator to maintain the auxiliary feed dog at the desired throw.
In Figs. 10 and 11, I have shown a slightly modified form of controlling mechanism for the shaft 52, which varies the stroke of the auxiliary feed dog. As herein shown the controlling lever 66 is pivoted to the head of the machine. The shaft 52 is journaled in a bracket 67, carried by the supporting bed, and the arm 68 pro ects toward the overhanging arm or standard,
rather than away from the same, as in the above described'construction.
Alink 69 connects the arm 68 with the controlling lever 66. A rod 70 is pivoted to one end of the controlling lever 66, and said rod at its other end engages a treadle 71, which is pivoted on a supporting base 72. A bracket 73 is secured to the forward face of the standard, and carries a notched segment 74. A locking pin 75 similar in construction to the locking pin 62, is carried by the controlling lever, and engages the notches in the segment 7 4.
By this construction, I have provided a controlling lever which may be shifted by a treadle, or a controlling lever which may be shifted by hand, as the controlling lever projects in front of the standard, and is formed with a hand grip. The controlling of the feed dog from the lever 66 is precisely the same as the controlling of the feed dog through the lever 55, above described.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have provided a tandem differential feed wherein the auxiliary feed dog is moved back and forth positively by a train of mechanism which is practically independent of the train of mechanism which moves the main feed dog back and forth. Furthermore, the train of mechanism for the auxiliary feed dog is so constructed that it may be shifted at the will of the operator, and during the operation of the machine, so that the effective stroke of the auxiliary feed dog relativeto the main feed dog, may be varied. This mechanism for shifting the throw of the auxiliary feed dog may be controlled by a foot treadle or by a hand lever, and when the controlling lever is shifted, the parts will be positively shifted in both directions, either to increase or decrease the throw of the auxiliary feed dog. Furthermore, when the desired throw is secured, the parts will be held inproper position for maintaining such throw, without any attention on the part of the operator.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts, may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
