Description

I'Lli'-OLS il". JEFFRXES, 0F ATLANTIC GITY, JERSEY.
BINEINGOST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
devices of that general character employed.
for clamping or holding a Wire in ali forms of electrical. or other Work.
As is Well known, it is a difficult matter generally in atlixing a wire or Wires by means ot the bindingx posts now in use in which the Wire is gen orally clamped between tivo nuts upon a bolt. Aside from diliculty and inconvenience in applying and clamp ing the Wire, there is danger of shunting or short circuiting and also great liability of the Wire becoming disengaged from the clamp.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome these difiiculties, and this in a simple manner embodying a bolt or post, cheap of manufacture and embodying ease of application and seenritj.' and eiidcieney in operation.
@ther objects and adventages ofthe invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out the apponder.L claim.
The invention is clear y illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which., with. the numerals of reference torni a part of this speoiication, and in Which- Figure l is tace view of a switch plate showing the application oit my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2---52/ of Fig. l looking in the direction. of the arrows. Fig. 3 is substantially central longitudinal section through the binding post with its cap in position. Fig. 4 is a detail in longitudinal section on the line eve of Fig. Bilooling in the direction of the arrows. Fig. is a horiontei section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3 loosing in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 6 is view similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified form. Fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 'l'--7 of Fi 6 looking in the direction of the arrows. ,Like numerals of reference indicate like parts'throughout the dierent views.
The invention is capable of embodiment inarled thereon,

Application filed March 25, 1914. Serial No. 827,145.
in a variety of forms, some of. the mostl elii` cient of which only are herein shown bythe iva? of illustration. `f
rlileiferring to the drawings, l ,designates a bolt provided with a preferably aXi'alf bore 2 for the passage and reception of the ,Wire and a cavity 3 in the head '-i, which latter is exteriorly threaded, as at 5, for the recep? tion of the cap nut G, which latter has an interiorly screnthreaded ydepending lange engaging the threads 5 of the head ofthe bolt. The head or" the bolt is provided with a transverse slot 8 which extends into the cavity 3, as seen in Figs. l and 5, Which slot is designed for the reception of a screw driver or other implement by which the bolt may be screwed into'place.
En use the bolt is screwed or otherwise passed through an opening 9 in theswitch plate. 10 or other article or support to which it may be desired. to apply the Wire'and the Wire il has its bared portion l2 passed longitudinally into and through the bore 2 of the bolt and the end thereof bent into 'the cavity 8 or into the slot@ .of the head of the bolt and then the cap '3 is 'screwed down, firmly holding the Wire in place and covering the cavity and the siot or the head of the bolt making a neat finish, as Will be understood upon reference to the various iigures of the drawing. A. nut 13 may or may not be employed ,upon the bolt, such nut being shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
lt Will be seen that tl-.e slot 8 may be made to serye the double purpose of receiving the screw driver or other implement by which the bolt maybe screwed into place prior to the fastening of the Wire, and then to receive 'thel bent end of the Wire, if desired, as seen in Fig. 52,. lt is evident' that the Wire may be coiled about in the cavity 3 or, ir" desired, it may be soldered in place.
in. Figs. (i and 7 I have shown a form designed for use in a material other than Wood, as, for instance, in' marble. In this forni the bolt l has the axial bore 2, the
cavity 3 and the slot 8 for the receptiono a screw driver, the head t being screwthreaded, as at 5, and receving the threads oi the l' of the cap 6, as before. The head is provided, however, upon its under surface with projections or the like 14 which may be of greater or less number and the purpose of which is to embed themselves in the marble or other material so as lse te prevent rotation ofthe bolt, it being unp derstood thatthese are to be employed when the bolt is used in connection with marble or such 4other material where the bolt cannot be screwed into place.` In such instances the bolt lneed not be provided with the screw threads, except at the end, a nut 18 being applied to the threaded end of the bolt and adapted to bear against the under side of ythe marble lor other support through which the bolt passes.
The mode of use will be apparent and the advantages of the invention will be latter may be readily pulled through the bore of the bolt. v
Modications in detail may be resorted td without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrieing any of its advantages.
IVhat is claimed as new is An eXterorly threaded bolt having an axial bore and having at one enda shouldered head with a .cavity in the outer face of the head surrounding said bore and communicating therewith and a slot extending radially in the outer face' of said head from said cavity to receive a screw driver, said cavity and slot adapted to receive the laterally bent end of a wire inserted through said bore, and a removable cap engageable with said head and extended over and covering said cavity, slot and bent end of the wire.
Signed my me at lVashington, D. C., this 25th day of March, 1914.
