ARTHUR A. WRIGHT, OF'MOULTON, IOWA.
JOURNAL-BOX.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed February 14, 1914. Serial No. 818,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moulton, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in journal boxes for railway cars, heavy machinery and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device of this character, which will be strong and durable and which will effectively exclude water and dust, and which presents novel means for preventing the anti-frictional rolls from becoming twisted or grooving the end of the journal box.
The invention further consists in providing a journal box with a detachable lubricating pocket or chamber which may be readily applied 'to the journal box to supplant a worn or damaged pocket.
To these and other ends the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their assemblage in operative combination as will be hereinafter fully describe and claimed. 7
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved journal box showing the same in position upon an axle, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section upon the line 22, of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing, the numeral 1 designates my improved journal box provided with a central longitudinal opening 2, cylindrical in a cross section and having substantially rectangular longitudinally extending channels 3 communicating with the central opening 2 and which are ar ranged at points diametrically opposite the center of the opening 2. The journal box is also provided with a series of vertical openings or orifices 4:, arranged in a plane and communicating with the rectangular longitudinal channels 3 of the journal box. A hearing box comprising two semi-cylindrical sections 5 and 6 having flanges 7 and 8 upon each of their ends and a longitudinal flange 9 upon each of their longitudinal edges is adapted for reception within the opening 2 formed within the journal box. The flanges 9 each project the same distance from both the outer and inner edges of each of the members comprising the bearing box and the saidflanges fully fill the channels 3, having their outer edges contacting with the outer walls provided by the said channels, 7
so that neither of the sections of the bearing box may extend beyond the other so that a perfect register of the sections of the box is maintained and consequently a smooth inner periphery of the box is assured. Suitable openings 10 are provided upon the longi tudinal flanges 7 and 8 of the bearing box, and are adapted to aline with the vertical openings 1 of the journal box, and these openings are adapted for the reception of the bolts 11 having threaded extremities for the reception of nuts or other suitable retaining elements 12, whereby the boxing may be securely retained in position within the longitudinal opening 2 of the journal box. Suitable anti-frictional rollers 13 are adapted to be received within the chamber formed by the flanges 7 and 8 upon the ends tire discarding of a damaged journal box and the replacing of the same by an entirely new box, and it also serves for the allowance of the ready insertion of the bearing box within the journal by merely removing the lubricating pocket from the box and replacing it after the bearing box has been inserted within the journal box.
From the foregoing description it will be noted that I have provided an improved journal box for cars or the like which is extremely simple, comparatively inexpensive as well as being strong and durable, and which allows for the ready insertion or removal of anti-frictional rolls and a bearing for the roll, and which is provided with a removable lubricating pocket which may be readily replaced when worn or damaged without interfering with the remainder of the journal box.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention minor details of construction may beresortedto without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is A journal box having a cylindrical opening, the diametrically opposite walls of which have longitudinally extending substantially rectangular channels, a; bearing box comprising two semi-cylindrical members arranged within the opening, said hearing box having end flanges and having their longitudinal edges formed with outturned substantially rectangular flanges which rest one upon the other and which are received within and fully fill the substantially'rec- ARTHUR A.
