, Specifica To all whom it may 'concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. AMIS, a citizen of the Ilnited States, and a resident of Toms yCreek, in" the county of IVise and State o f Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jigs, of which the following is a specification'.
This invention relates to jigs, adapted for use in the separation of base materials from mixtures as originally mined, such as slate from coal, and the main object thereof is to accomplish this resultat any desired specific gravity, regardless of the per cent. of heavy or light materials, automatically.
A further object is to accomplish this result by passing the mixture `over a suitable screen and subjecting the same to pulsations of water directed through said mixiture. f
A further object is to provide mechanical j means for removing the heaviest' materials from said mixture.
A further object is to provide a gage for regulating the depth of the bed of mixture passing to said mechanical discharge means.
A further object is -to provide an adjustable gate for gaging the specific gravity of the materials passing thereover.`
A further object is toprovide a dam for permitting the lightest materials to pass from said jig directly.
A further object is to insure such separation at atmospheric pressure in ont jig, and to providel means for accomplishing such separation by acompressed air cushion in another jig, all automatically, and in a controllable manner. Y j

l. comprising a support, a screen theieon. a feed for directing a mixture onto said sereeu. an adjustable dam over which the lightest materials of said mixture may pass, means for supplying water, in pulsations, to said jig. through the mixture on said sereen. meuhanieal means for reluoving he heaviest materials of said mixture from said sei-een. a sloping plate *forming an air chamber thereover, an automatic air-valve for said chamber, and an adjustable gate beneath said chamber for controlling the speeih'c gravity ot' materials passing thereover, the air in said Chamber being Compressed by the water pulsations to force accumulating materials in the yU-tuloe so formed over said gate, as forced upwardly by said pulsations.
2. A jig, comprising a support, a screen thereon, a feed for directing a mixture onto said sei-een. means for separating the lighterl materials of said mixture from the heavier, mechanical means for removing the heaviest materials from said screen, a hinged trap arranged over said mechanical means to accommodate unusually large lumps ot' material and permit the same to escape from said. mechanical means, and adj ustahle means for regulating the depth of the mixture passing to saidmechanieal means.
