SHINGLING-BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed. August 26, 1914.. Serial No. 858,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THADDEUS G. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marengo, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shingling- Brackets, of which the following is a'specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to shingling brackets and has for its primary object to provide a very durable and serviceable device of this character whereby a convenient foot rest may be afforded for the workman while shingling a roof.
The invention has for a more particular object to provide a bracket of the above character which may be very easily and quickly set up upon the roof and adjusted in the proper position to support a suitable foot board or beam, so that the workman can assume various positions on the roof without danger.
The invention has for a further general object to simplify the construction of devices of this character and to increase their general convenience and serviceability in practical use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a pair of my improved shingling brackets arranged upon a roof in position for use, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the brackets, and Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing 5 designates the base plate, preferably constructed of steel, and in one end of this base plate an opening 6 is formed. Upon the opposite end of said plate and on one side thereof, an anchoring member 7 is secured by means of a bolt 8. This anchoring member is formed with a flange 9 terminating in the spur 10. The screw or bolt 8 also socures upon the upper or opposite surface of the base plate 5, a plate 11, having spaced hinged knuckles 12 formed upon one of its longitudinal edges. A nut 13 threaded upon the upper end of the bolt 8 is adapted to be adjusted to securely clamp the parts 7 and 11 to the base plate 5.
l4 designates a supporting bar, one end of which is twisted and disposed in a plane at right angles to the remaining portion of the bar, and is formed withra hinged sleeve 15 upon its extremity which is adapted to be arranged between the knuckles 12. A pintle 1.6 is then inserted through the bores of the coinciding knuckles and the sleeve 15 to hingedly connect the supporting bar 14 to the plate 11. A second plate l7;is secured upon the base plate 5 by means of bolts 18, the heads of which are countersunk in the base plate. Suitable clamping nuts 19 are threaded upon said bolts. Upon one edge of this plate 17, a central hinge knuckle 20 is integrally formed. Spaced knuckles 21 are also provided upon one end of the plate 22 and adapted tobe arranged upon opposite sides of the knuckle 20. These knuckles receive the pintle 23. The other end of the plate 22 is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slot 24: through which the supporting bar 1% extends. This bar 14 is provided with spaced openings 25, any one of which is adapted to receive a pin or key 26, which supports the plate 22 against movement in one direction with respect to the bar 14.
In arranging the supporting brackets upon a roof to be shingled, the spurs 10 are embedded in the roof, while the base plates 5 extend upwardly thereon. These base plates may be secured to the roof rafters, if desirable, or necessary, by driving nails through the opening 6. The plate 22 is adjusted with respect to the hingedly mounted bar 14 in accordance with the pitch of the roof so that the beam B, the ends of which are engaged upon the spaced brackets 22 will be disposed in the proper position. The pin 26 is then inserted through one of the openings 25 in the bar 14; beneath the plate 22. Thus a ledge or support is provided on the sloping roof against which the workman may rest and find a support, while he is applying the shingles.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use of my in vention will be clearly and fully understood. The improved shingling bracket is extremely simple in its construction as well as highly convenient and durable in practical use. It is, of course, understood that additional openings may be provided in the bar 14, so that a greater range of adjustment of the plate 22 can be obtained.
WVhile I have above described the preferred form, construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it Will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
The herein described shingling bracket comprising in combination the following elements to wit; a base plate, a knuckle arranged upon the upper face of said base plate at one of its ends, an anchoring spur on the under side of the base plate at said end thereof, common fastening means extending through the base plate, the knuckle and the spur to secure the knuckle and spur to the opposite sides of the base plate, a sup porting bar provided with an angularly disposed pintle on one end engaged in said knuckle, a bracket plate hingedly and detachably mounted upon the upper face of the base plate in spaced relation to the opposite end thereof, the free end of said bracket plate being provided With a longitudinal slot to receive said supporting bar, said bar having a plurality of openings therein, and a pin adapted to be engaged in any one of said openings and upon Which said bracket plate is adapted to rest, Whereby said bracket plate is supported in a position at right angles to said supporting bar. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. THADDEUS GEORGE ROSS. WVitnesses B. E. BRIGHT, ERNEST CRAWFORD.
