Continuation of application Serial No. 785,430, led August 18, 1913. This application filed November 10, 1913, Serial No. 800,193.
To all whom it may concern.' f
Be it known that I, MARK A. BROWN, a citizen ofthe United `States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in car couplings, and is a continuation of an application filed by me Aug. 18, 1913, Serial No. 785,430.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of car couplings, more especially the draw bar and the means for mounting thel same, and to provide a simple, efficient and comparatively inexpensive ball bearingcar coupling, adapted to be readily shifted in a direction laterally of the car by the operating means of the car coupling to arrange it in proper position for automatic coupling, and capable, when free to move, of automatically returning to a central position.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to withoutV departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, l designates a draw head pro vided with a draw bar 2 having an oppositely inclined bottom face 3, extending downwardly and inwardly from the side face of the draw bar to the center thereof and arranged upon a seat formed by a ball bearing plate 4, mounted within a carrier iron 5l The carrier iron 5, which is suitably secured to the framework of the car, is preferably composed of spaced vertical sides 1 and a straight transversely disposed bottom connecting portion 6, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The ball bearing plate, which has a fiat horizontal face 7, is fitted against the upper face of the bottom lConnecting portion 6 of the carrier iron, and 1t extends entlrely across the same and 1s provided at its side edges with depending fianges 8, fitting against the side edges of the f is oppositely inclined in a longitudinal direction to conform to the configuration of the oppositely inclined bottom face 3 of the draw bar 2, and the said upper face 9 inclining downwardly and inwardly from the ends of the bearing plate to the center thereof. The oppositely inclined portions of the upper face 9 of the bearing plate are rounded transversely 'of the bearing plate andvextend downwardly from the longitudinal center to the side edges thereof to prevent fric- `tional contact of the shank of the car coupling with the bearing plate should one end of the car coupling drop to a lower position than the other. By this construction, the upper face of the ball bearing plate is oppositely inclined both longitudinally and transversely. '.lhe ball bearing plat and the transverse connecting portion otl the carrier iron are provided with registering slots or openings 13 and 14, forming an outlet for cinders and other accumulation and preferably flared at the bottom, as illustrated in Fig. i2 of the drawing. Any cinders or dust dropping into the groove will be worked through the outlet opening and discharged from the ball bearing seat of the car coupling by the action ot' the balls.

A ear coupling including a carrier iron having spaced sides and a connecting portion, a seat arranged upon the connecting portion otl the carrier iron and provided with means for detachably interlocking it with the said iron, said seat being provided in its upper `face with a groove extending the entire length ot the seat and closed at its ends by the sides of the carrier iron, a draw bar, and a series ot antifriction balls arranged in the groove and supporting the draw bar, the walls ot' the groove partially embracing the major portion of the antiiiriction balls, whereby the latter are retained in the groove.
