C. A. MUERRLE.
OVERSHOE FOR HORSES. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 12, I915.
COLUMBIA PLANOORAPH c0.. WASHINGTON. n. c,
Patented July 13, 1915;
OVERSHOE FOR HORSES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed February 12, 1915. Serial no. 7,732.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES ARTHUR MUERRLE, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes for Horses; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same.
My invention relates to an overshoe for horses which will prevent the slipping of the hoof on the pavement, and the object of my invention is to so construct and arrange this overshoe that while effectively preventing the slipping of the hoof it will notinjure the sole or frog thereof.
In carrying out this invention, I use a sole pad of a size and shape to cover the sole of the hoof, and preferably made of a matting of rope or other fibrous material, with the fibrous face thereof exposed to the pavement, and I provide this sole pad with straps or other flexible means by which it can be attached to the hoof.
For an understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of a hoof with an overshoe attached; and, Fig. 2, is a plan view looking at the bottom of the overshoe.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The overshoe consists of two principal integers, viz: a sole pad and connecting means, the sole pad a being of such a shape and size as to completely cover the sole of the hoof b and preferably made of matting, formed of rope or other fibrous material, with the fibers c exposed to the pavement, and the body or backing d thereof adjacent to the sole of the hoof.
The matting being of a flexible and yielding character will readily conform not only to any irregularity in the surface of the pavement, but will also conform to the hoof ping of the hoof thereon, and at the same time cushions the impact ofthe hoof thereon.
Surrounding the sole pad is a projecting band 6, formed with loops 6 through which is passed a strap f, by which the overshoe is attached to the hoof; the strap being so arranged'that it extends around the heel g to prevent the overshoe slipping forward on the hoof, and then three times across the toe thereof to preventthe overshoe slipping forward and sidewise; by means of an overshoe of this kind the hoof can be prevented from slipping on a glazed pavement, without injury to the soles or frogs.
To accommodate the heel and toe calks of the horse shoe, a second set of loops h are provided between the protecting band and the sole pad.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An overshoe for horses comprising a sole pad completely covering the sole of the hoof and made of matting formed of rope or other fibrous material with the fibers exposed to the pavement and the body or backing adjacent to the sole of the hoof, a protecting band surrounding the sole pad and formed with loops, a strap passing through said loops for attaching the overshoe to the hoof, the strap extending around the heel of the hoof to prevent the overshoe slipping forward and three times across the toe thereof to prevent it slipping forward and sidewise, and a second set of loops provided between the protecting band andsole pad to accommodate the heel and toe calks of a horseshoe.
