Specification of letters Patent.
Patented July 113, l'hllfi.
Application filed December aa'iaia Serial No. 878,701.
To all whom it may concern Be 'it known that T,"MAER LEON Go n- MAN, a citizen of the United States, resldmg in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New.
York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Seals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in bottle seals of the crown cap type and my objects are the production of a cap in which the union between the metal shell and the sealing gasket will be more reliable and the waste in cutting the protective collet between the gasket and shell will be reduced to a minimum. J
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a sectional view of my improved seal and Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are variations in the form of protective collet.
As is well known, crown caps consist of three members, first the metal shell 1, second, the interposed protective collet 2, generally of paper, and third, the sealing gasket 3, generally of cork. These parts have been unlted into a single structure and heretofore this has been accomplished commercially by charging the protective collet with a waxy fusible adhesive binding material, under the influence of heat and pressure has caused the sealing gasket to adhere to the protective collet and the collet to the metal shell. Owing to the fact that the sealing gaskets have generally been treated with paraffin or glycerin or both, to render them soft and pliable; the degree of heat necessary to fuse the binder has also melted the paraffin or glycerin or both, and interfered with a reliable union between the gasket and the collet.
the use of my present invention, retain the full advantage of the protective collet but do not depend upon it to secure the union of the parts. a
In making my improved seal, the tin plate from which the shells are punched is first coated on one side with shellac or its equivalent, after which the shells are unched out, with the shellac on the insi e. The protective collet which forms the basis of my invention is next punched out but in all cases has a less superficial area than the area of the gasket or bottom of the shell.
This may be a small collet as shown in Fig.
3 in which the dotted line indicates the gasket and shell bottom area but is preferably provided with centering extensions 4, as shown in Fig. 2, or it may take the form shown in Fig. 4, with the projections 4. If a center union is desired the collet may take the form shown in Fig. 5 with the central opening 5. Either succeeding or during the operation of assembling the shell, collet and gasket heat is applied, rendering the shellac sticky so that wherever the gasket is in direct contact with the shell, adhesion occurs whether on the edge or center of the face, according to the shape of the collet, and on the edge. By this construction, get an extra holding of the gasket to the shell at the bottom and it is not essential that the collet be sticky or adhesive although it may be so if desired. By using a disk of less superficial area than heretofore, I am enabled to get more from a given amount of paper reducing the 'manufacturing cost. The heating to secure the union may, if desired, take place during pasteurization after the cap is on the bottle, although complete union before use is preferable.- Should the sealing gaskets be slightly undersized, they may still be reliably .united to the metal shell by the use of my invention.
I claim 1. A bottle seal comprising a metal shell with an interior adhesive coating, a sealing gasket and an interposed protective collet of less superficial area than the gasket, the surfaces of the gasket and shell in contact being united by the adhesive coating.
2. A bottle seal comprising a metal shell with an interior adhesive coating, a sealing gasket, an interposedprotective collet of less superficial area than the gasket, provided with centering extensions, the surfaces of the gasket and shell in contact being united by the adhesive coating.
'3. A bottle seal comprising a metal shell with an interior adhesive coating, a sealing gasket, an interposed protective collet of less superficial area than the gasket saturated with an adhesive, the surfaces of the gasket,
shell and collet in contact being united. by
the adhesives.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' MAYER LEON GOLDMAN.
