AUTO GAS-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MAX GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auto Gas-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is to effect the discontinuation of the supply of gas to a gas-burner or the like, upon the flame thereof being extinguished in any manner other than by closing the cock or valve of the burner. And to these ends the invention consists of a gravity-actuated valve for stopping the flow of gas to a burner and a thermostatic element connected to the burner and having one end portion arranged to be located in the flame and having another portion arranged for controlling the said valve upon the extinguishing of the flame.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the acco1n panying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of Fig. 1. with parts shown broken away for the sake of clearness and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, a. indicates a gas-burner which is provided with a gravity actuated valve 5 and a thermostatic element 6 for controlling the valve.
The burner is similar in structure to the usual burner now in use, and is provided with a screw-threaded lower end portion so as to be readily positioned on a fixture such as shown by 7 in Fig. 1. The burner is also provided at its lower end with a union 7' having a pair of diametrically opposite bearings 8 and 9; and slidably fitted within the bearing 8 is a rectangular lug or latch 10 provided with an angularly disposed retaining pin 11 which projects through the slot 12 provided in the bearing. As shown in Fig. 3 the latch is provided with a beveled end portion and is normally projected outwardly by the spring 11 which is positioned Within the bearing 8.
The valve 5 is operated by the arm 12 which is mounted on the spindle 13 of the valve, and is provided at one end with an adjustable weight 14-. The other or shorter end 15 of the arm is adapted to be engaged by the latch 10, and thus retain the weight in the upper position, for the purpose of retaining the valve in its open position. The arm 12 is also provided with an ofiset end portion 16 to which is attached a depending chain 16 for the purpose of operating the arm 12 when it is desired to set the same and retain the valve 5 in its open position.
The thermostatic element 6 is preferably formed of a material which has a relatively high ratio of expansion, and in point of cheapness of manufacture and in efficiency of operation, the same may be made of brass.
The element 6 forms a substantial frame, and is carried on the burner, by virtue of having one end 17 secured within the bear ing 9 at the lower end of the burner, as shown. The frame is provided with two horizontal cross-arms 18 and 19, which are provided with suitable bearings at their ends, so that a vertical arm 20 may be pivotally connected thereto. This arm 20 has its lower end offset as indicated at 21, so as to frame a projection that is brought into engagement with the latch 10, when the de vice is automatically actuated. As shown in Fig. 1. the frame and arm 20 may be vertically adjusted by means of the screw and slot arrangement indicated by 20', which thus admits of the frame and vertical arm being readily adjusted to compensate for any irregularities in. either the flame or burner as such may arise.
In practice, to light the burner, the usual cock I; is turned on so as to allow any desired volume of gas to flow to the burner. The arm 12 is then raised by pulling the chain 16 until the end 15 of the arm passes over the beveled end of the latch 10. which is directed outwardly by its spring 11. The upper-cross-arm 19 is arranged so as to be positioned within the flame, as shown, and by virtue of being heated. expands in length. As the length of the cross-arm increases, pressure will be brought to bear against the upper end of the vertical rock-arm 20, thus tilting the same on its pivot 22, so that the latch is pushed backwardly and the end,
is engaged by the toe-portion." Now, if the flame be extinguished such as by being blown out accidentally or otherwise, the cross-arm 19 will obviously cool and contract, thus assuming its normal length, whereupon, the arm 20 will be drawn back to its normal position and will thus disen gage its toe-portion 21 from contact with the valve operating arm whereupon the weight will operate to turn the valve to its closed position.
' It will be noticed by referring to Fig. 3, that the toe-portion 21 and the latch 10 are off-set from each other, this provision being made for the purpose of preventing thelatch from springing in front of the end 15 upon the subsequent releasing of the end 15 from engagement with the valve operating arm.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and there fore I' do not wish'to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
What I claim as new is:
In combination with a valved burner, a union supporting the burner, a frame fixed to the union and having an expansible portion located in the heating zone of the burner, a triple ended arm attached to the valve burner, a spring pressed catch located in the union and projecting into the path of movement of one end of the arm, a lever fulcrumed upon the frame and connected with the expansible portion thereof and having an end portion adapted to engage said catch and move the catch out of the path of movement of the arm and which assumes a position in the path of movement of the arm, a weight mounted upon the second end portion of the arm and a pull member attached to the third end of the arm.
