To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARD E. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is adescription, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines, and more especially to the feeding mechanism of a sewing machine.
The invention as herein shown is espe cial-ly adapted to machines of the character which operate to full or gather a piece of fabric prior to stitching the same, or fullor gather one piece of fabric relative to another, and secure the same together.
When placing a binding strip or the like upon a knitted fabric, and more especially when binding across the wales of the knitted fabric, the knitted fabric is very apt to become stretched or distorted in the stitching operation. By my improved mechanism, the
.knitted fabric may be fed slightly faster than the binding strip or non-elastic fabric, thus overcoming the tendency of the knitted fabric .to stretch, so that the two pieces of fabric will be evenly and smoothly stitched together. It is sometimes desirable, when stitching one piece of fabric to another of the above'char'acter, to cause the fulling action of the feeding mechanism to cease, as
for example. when crossing stay strips or' the like.
, The invention, therefore,- contemplates providing mechanism whereby the falling action of the feeding mechanism may be rendered inefiective whenever desired, without stopping the stitching mechanism:
The invention consists in the parts, ar-- rangements and improvements hereinafter shown, described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration, one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is an end elevation with the work support removed. and certain parts in section, showing a machine with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a view from the front of the machine; Fig. 3 is a view from the rear of the machine; Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the auxiliary feed dog operating mechanism; Fig. 5 is a detail, partly in section, of the hinged connection in the feed bar for the auxiliary feed dog; Fig. 6 is ,a top plan v ew of the auxiliary feed dog operating mechanism; Fig. 7 is a top planview, showing the relation of the auxiliary feed dog to the fabric, when the machine is adapted for stitching a binding on to a fabric; and Fig. 8 is a detail view in plan, showing the relation of the feed dogs.
The overhanging arm 1 carries a needle bar 2, at its forward .end, which is reciprocated by the usual needle lever 3. The needle bar 2 carries a needle 4, which is of the ordinary construction. Cotiperating with the needle 4 is a looper 5, which is pivoted at (3 to -a looper rocker 7, which is also of the usual construction.' The looper 5 is oscillated bymeans of the link 8. The presser bar 9 is mounted in the forward end of the machine, and carries a presser foot 10. The presser bar is provided with'the usual stud 11, which is engaged by a lever 12. connected to a suitabel treadle or knee shift, whereby the presser bar may be lifted whenever desired. The presser bar is guided in its movements by the usual guide bar 13, which moves up and down, with the presser bar. The main feed dog 14 is carried by the feed bar 15, which is pivoted at 16 to a rocking frame or feed rocker 17, pivoted in turn at 18 to the bed plate 19 of the machine. frame 17 is rocked back and forth by means of the usual arm 20', which is connected by means of a link 21 with a stud 22, 'adjustably The mounted in a disk 23, carried by the main This auxiliary feed dog is located above the work support, and is so positioned as to engage the fabric at one side of the stitching mint and in advance of the main feed dog ll. This position of the parts is especially adapted for stitching one piece of fabric to another. If, however, it was desired to full in a single piece of fabric, the auxiliary feed bar 33 rests upon feed dog 27, is pivoted between the forked ends 30 and 31, of a bracket arm 32, which is carried by the auxiliary feed bar 33. The
bracket arm 32 extends upwardly, as at 34, from its connection with the auxiliary feed dog 33, and then laterally, as at 35, so that the auxiliary feed dog may be supported and operated at the opposite side of the stitching point from the auxiliary feed bar 33.
The auxiliary feed bar 33 is niuiie in two parts 36, 37, which are connected by means of a pivot pin 38. The part 37 consists of an extended sleeve 39, which surrounds the pivot pin 16 between the rocking frame and the main feed bar 15. The sleeve 39 has a forwardly extending arm 40, which is provided with a shoulder 41, gages a shoulder 42 on the forward part 36 of the auxiliary-feed bar. When the shoul= ders '41 and 42 are brought into contact, the movement of the portion 37 of the auxiliary feed bar relative to the portion 36, is limited. The sleeve 39 is also provided with a rearwardly extending arm 43, which is connected by means of a link 44 withone arm 45 of a rock lever which is mounted on a pivot bolt 18 for the rocking frame 17.

The forward portion of the auxiliary feed an eccentric 47 mounted on the main shaft24. The bracket arm 48 carried by the auxiliary feed bar engages the under side of the eccentric 47 so that as the eccentric 47 rotates, the auxiliary feed bar will be moved up and down positively.
A spring 49 is secured by suitable screws 50 to the back side of the rocking frame 17. Said spring extends up over the rocking frame, and has its forward end 'bent upon itself, so as to rest upon the forward portion 36 of the auxiliary feed bar. Said spring tends normally to rotate the part 37 of theauxiliary feed bar about its pivotal support, and also the part 36 of the auxiliary feed-bar about the eccentric 47, so that the shoulders 41 and 42 are held in contact with mental slot each other. During the feeding movements of the auxiliary feed dog, the parts of the auxiliary feed bar .move back and forth, as though they were formed of a single part. The
'lever 28 which carries the auxiliary feed bar 27 is provided at its upper end with a seg- 51. A link 52 is connected atone end to a ball stud 53, projecting from a collar 54, carried by the guiding bar 13 of the presserv foot mechanism. The other end which in turn enwhich is adjustably secured in the slot 51. The bracket arm 32 is provided with a slot 56, which engages a set screw 57, carried by the auxiliary feed bar. It will, therefore, be seen that the bracket arm may be adjusted vertically, and by this adjustment the working position of the auxiliary feed dog relative to the work support, be varied. As herein shown, the machine is provided with a folder or a binding guide 57, which may be of any desired character. The binding B as it is led from the binder, passes to the stitching mechanism at one side of tlie auxiliary feed dog, while the main fabric F is guided between the folded portions of the binding, and isengaged by the auxiliary feed dog.
When it is desired to place a binding strip upon an elastic fabric, the auxiliary feed dog will operate upon the elastic fabric, and feed the same slightly faster than the binding strip, so that all tendency of the elastic fabric to stretch is overcome, and the elastic fabric is evenly and smoothly stitched to the binding strip. If a stay strip or other. non- "elastic portion of the fabric is brought -to the stitching mechanism, the operator may readily, if desired, throw the auxiliary feed dog out of contact'with the material until oscillated back and forth, the bracket arm 32 is also moved baizk and forth. The lever 28 carrying the auxiliary feed dog will, therefore, be vibrated about its pivotal connection with the link 52. This gives to the auxiliary feed dog its feeding movement. As the eccentric 47 rotates, the auxiliary feed dog will be raised and lowered, which will also raise and lower the bracket arm 34, and this In turn will raise and lower the lever 28, carrying the auxiliary feed dog. The link 52 in this movement of the auxiliary feed dog swings about the ball stud 53' as a center. The movement of the auxiliary feed bar and the bracket arm carried thereby back and forth with the rocking frame 17, 1s, of course, in unison with the movements of the main feed dog. The swinging of the lever 28, however, about the pivotal point 55 will multiply the movement of the auxiliary feed bar, so that the auxiliary feed dog will move a greater distance than the main feed dog. This gives to the auxil ary feed dog a differential movement relative to the main feed dog.. The amount of the differential movement may be varied by adjusting the away from the pivotal connection between the bracket 32 and the lever 28, the move-r nientsof the auxiliary feed dog will .be deis connected to a ball stud 55,creased, and when said pivotal po nt is moved in the opposite direction, the movements of the auxiliary feed dog relative to the main feed dog will be increased. When it is desired to render the feeding movements of the auxiliary feed dog ineffective, the rocking lever at the rear of the machine is depressed. Thismovement of the rocking lever through the link 44, will swing the rear portion of the auxiliary feed bar about its piv'ot, which will raise the pivotal connec- 1 tion between the portions of the auxiliary fore, but inasmuch as the feed dog is moved from contact with the fabric, it will be rendered ineffective. Inasmuch as the link 52 is pivoted to the guiding bar of the presser foot mechanism, whenever the presser foot is raised for the insertion of material, the
stud 53 to which the link 52 is pivoted, will be raised, and this will throw backward the upper end of the lever 28, thus raising the v auxiliary feed dog, so that the work may be readily inserted.

The combination with a work support, of stitch-forming mechanism, feeding mechanism including a main feed dog, an auxiliary feed dog, a bar to which said auxiliary feed dog is pivoted,means for moving said bar back and forth in unison with the main feed dog, means for swinging said auxiliary feed dog on its pivot whereby it is given a differential movement relative to the main for varying said differential movement, and independent means for rendering said differential movement inefiective without stopping the stit forming mechanism.
10. The combination or a work support,
stitch-forming mechanism, feeding mechanism including a main feed dog, an auxiliary feed dog located above the work support and engaging the fabric at one side of and the stitching point, a feed bar to which said auxiliary feed dog is pivoted, means for moving said feed bar back and forth in'unison with said main feed dog, means for swinging said auxiliary feed dog about its pivotal support, whereby the same is given a differential movement relative to means for varying said differential movement, and means for moving said auxiliary feed dig out of operative engagement with the fabric, without stopping the stitch-forming mecha 'sm.
