To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIAN O. ELLINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforcement for Concrete Construction, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to improvements in concrete beams, girders, and the like, and more particularly to that class of reinforcements wherein the tension members and the shear members are connected and form an open framework of a unitary construction to be embedded in concrete;
()ne of the objects of the invention is to so arrange theelements, that when the unitary frames are placed in alinementthe adjacent ends of the lower tension members will be in abutting alinement, and the adjacent ends of the upper tension members will be in different planes, and overlapping.
Other objects will appear from the hereinafter description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of two of the frames in alinement; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on line 2 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4 is aside elevation of a slight modification. Fig. 5 is aview of two sets of the alined frames placed side bv side.
Referring to the drawings, in which the same reference character represents thesame part in the several views, A is one unit frame. and B another.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive the parts marked 10 and 10 represent the lower tension member, and 11 and 11 the upper tension member. of the respective frames. The upper tension member of each frame is formed preferably of two separate elements, as shown in Fig. 1. although it may be formed of one element 21 as shown in Fig. 4. The outer ends of the upper tension member whether formed of two or one element, extend beyond the outer ends of the lower tension member of each frame. The upper and lower tension members are connected together by the transverse members, marked 12 on the frame A, and 12 on frame B; and the ends of these shear Specification of Letters Patent.

A third member, 13 on frame A, and 13 on the frame B, may be located at the central portion of and substantially parallel to the lowertension member, with its outer ends rigidly connected to the shear members, preferably by electric welding. The construction of the unit frames is such that when the frames A and B are placed end to end with the adjacent ends of the lower tension members in alinement, and preferably abutting, the adjacent ends of the upper tension members, are in different planes, and overlap.
In the construction shown, in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4:, each end of the upper tension memher, or each element of the same, of each frame is in the same vertical plane, and, preferably, in the same horizontal plane, sothat when the frames A and B are placed end to end and in alinement, as shown in said figures, the adjacent ends of the upper tension members, or the elements of the same, will be in different vertical planes, and overlap.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A reinforcement for concrete construction,consisting of a plurality of unit frames, each frame having upper and lower longitudinal members, spaced apart, the upper longitudinal members each having throughout its length a uniform width which is less than that of the lower longitudinal member, and a series of shear members rigidly connected to the upper and lower members, the outer ends of the upper member extending beyond the ends of the lower member, the
unit frames being located end to end with the lower members in alinement, and each adjacent upper member being in different vertical planes and overlapping each other, the combined width of the upper members being substantially equal to the width of the lower member.
2. A reinforcement for concrete constructi on, consisting of a plurality of unit frames, each frame formed of a lower longitudinal member and an upper longitudinal member consisting of two separate elements located over each end of the'lower member, each of which has a uniform width substantially equal to one-half the width of the lower member, the outer end of each upper ele- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ment of the upper member extending beyond the end of the lower member, transverse shear members connecting each of said elemembers being in different vertical planes and overlapping.
