HARVEY T. TAYLOR, OE PUEBLO, COLORADO. I
LOOK FOR VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application filed November 19, 1913. Serial No. 801,937.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY T. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of lock for locking a valve in a service or non-service position so as to prevent unauthorized persons from changing the adjustment of the valve from either position in which it has been locked by an authorized person. a
The various utilities for a valve of this character are well recognized, and likewise the advantages, and the object of my invention is to simplify this character of look so as to make it more effectivein operation and reduce its cost of construction.
Among the primary objects of my invention is to provide a locking member upon a valve which is adapted for coaction with specially formed portions of the casing of the valve to hold the valve in service or nonservice position, and locking means provided for coaction with the locking member and the valve for preventing movement of the locking member out of the holding position into which it has been adjusted.
' Other objects and features of the invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawingand will be more particularly pointed out and ascertained in and by the appended claims.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a view in side elevation embodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the differentligures of the drawing.
As illustrated, 1 designates a valve casing which is connectedwith pipes 2 and 3. A valve plug 1 is mounted for rotation in said valve casing 1, in a manner usual in this form of valve, and the plug 4 is shown to be of the tapered form and held in fluidtight engagement with the casing 1 bya. common form of device 5.
The casing 1 is provided with notches 6, which are so located with respect to the port of the valve plug 4, not shown, as to hold the valve plug 4 in a non-service or closing position. A notch 7 is providedin the casing 1 for holding the valve in a service. or
open position.
The valve plug 4 carries a locking member which is shown in the form of a flat plate 8, pivoted at 9, to a bifurcated portion of the plug 1. The pivot 9 is eccentric with respect to a portion 10 which is adapted to fit into notches 6 or 7 to hold the plug 1 in either a service or non-service position.
\Vhen the device of my invention is in the adjustment shown in Fig. 1, a fluid passage. 11, shown in dotted lines, is in a service position to permit of flow of liquid from pipe 2 to 3 through the valve casing. The locking member 8 is engaged with notch 7 so as to hold the valve 4 against movement from a service position. By tilting the locking member from the full line to the dotted line position, as shown in Fig. 1, the valve plug 4 may be turned to dispose the locking member 8 in a horizontal plane for engagement with either of the notches 6, to hold the valve plug 4 in a non-service or closing position.
In order to lock the member 8 against movement from the position into which it has been adjusted, Iprovide means of the following construction: An opening 12 is provided in the locking member 8 and the bifurcated head of the plug 4 is preferably notched, as indicated at 13, for engagement with the shackle 14 of a padlock 15. It will be seen that in the position shown in Fig. 1, it will be impossible to move the member 8 in order to swing the eccentric portion 10 out of the notch 7 by reason of engagement of the shackle 14 with the recess portion 13. The only way in which adjustment of the valve can be effected, is to unlock the lock 15 and detach its shackle 14 so that the member 8 can be shifted.
I have shown a common form of padlock but I may desire to use any form of mechanism, which may be a lock or a seal, and
which will function in such coacting relation with respect to the locking member 8 and the valve plug 1 as to lock the former against movement from a holding position with respect to the casing 1.
It is believed that the advantages and utility of my invention will be fully under; stood from the foregoing description and while I have shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention, I'do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
1. Ina valve structure of the turning plug type, a valve casing having the usual plug opening formed therein and provided with locking notches disposed to extend radially from said opening, a turning plug revolubly mounted in said opening and provided with an outwardly extending bifurcated head portion, a locking plate pivoted within said bifurcation at the approximate turning center of said plug and having a portion thereof eccentrically formed to be received within the locking notches to hold the plug against turning movement, and all of said parts so arranged that as the plate is engaged in one of the radially disposed notches the plug is held against turning movement.
2. In a valve structure of the turning plug type, a valve casing having the usual plug opening provided therein and provided with looking notches disposed to ex tend radially from said opening, a turning plug revolubly mounted in said opening and provided with an outwardly extending bifurcated head portion, a locking plate pivoted within said bifurcation at the approximate turning center of said plug and having a portion thereof eccentrically formed to be received within the locking notches to hold the plug against turning movement, and said locking plate formed to be swung from the locking position and provided with an opening therethrough located to be dis posed in the locked position in a relation to permit the insertion of a member there through to secure the locking plate against 1 movement from the operatim relation. 3. In a valve structure of the turning plug type, a valve casing having the usual plug opening formed therein and provided with locking notches disposed to extend radially from said opening, a turning plug revolubly mounted in said opening and provided with an outwardly extending bifurcated head portion, a locking plate pivoted within said bifurcation at the approximate turning center of said plug to be capable of turning motion in either direction and having a portion thereof eccentrically formed to engage in the locking notches to hold the plug against turning movement, said plate and the eccentrically formed portion thereof arranged in a manner that the lock becomes operative when swung to the one side or the other, and the plate provided with an opening and the bifurcated edge shaped to'permit the insertion of a member therethrough in one of the operatively swung positions to secure the locking plate against movement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY T. TAYLQR.
