citizen of the United tates, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia -and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motor Mechanism for Reversing Fluid-Operated Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in motor apparatus for operating the valve reversing mechanism of fluid operated engines and has particular application to a manually controlled apparatus of this class.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide apparatus of the class described whereby the valve reversing mechanism of fluid operated engines, such, for instance, as steam driven locomotives, may be actuated independently of the usual hand lever and which may be used in conjunction with'the usual hand lever so that in the event of defect in the motor apparatus the valve reversing mechanism may be manipulated by hand;
It is also my purpose to provide motor apparatus for actuating the valve reversing mechanism of fluid operated engines where by the valve reversing mechanism will be operated through the lead bar and the looking dog of the hand lever connected with such mechanism by means of the lead bar released so that such hand lever will be free to move in the shifting of the lead bar.
Furthermore, I aim to provide apparatus of the type set forth which may be installed and maintained at a minimum expense, which will operate efficiently and effectively under all conditions and which may be readily cut out of service in the event of failure thereof so that the valve reversing mechanism may be operated by hand.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation showing my invention installed on a steam driven locomotive. Fig. 2 is a similar view, parts being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the check valves. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the valve reversing mechanism which may be of any suitable or preferred construction, while 2 designates a hand lever fulcrumed at one end as at 3 and movable over a toothed quadrant 4. Connecting the hand lever 52 with the valve reversing mechanism 1 is a horizontal lead bar 5, while slidably mounted upon the hand lever 2 is the usual locking dog 6 designed to engage the teeth of the quadrant 4 to hold the hand lever in the desired position and capable of sliding movement out of engagement with such teeth.
7 indicates a motor which, in the present instance, is of the fluid operated type and comprises a horizontal cylinder 8 disposed below the lead bar 5 and parallel therewith and a piston 9 within the cylinder 8 and capable of rectilinear movement therein. Connected with one. side of the piston 9 and projecting outwardly of one end of thecylinder is a rod 10 having the outer end thereof slidably mounted within a guide block 11 fixed to an appropriate support. Fixed to the rod 10 between the guide block 11 and the confronting end of the cylinder 8 is a collar 12 having the upper portion thereof formed with an upwardly extending block 13 carrying a pin l4c arranged transversely of the collar and having the oppo ite extremities thereof projecting beyond the respective sides of the block 13. Suitably secured to the opposite side edges of the lead bar 5 and depending therefrom are arms 15 straddling the block 13 and having the lower extremities thereof formed with vertical slots 16 receiving the outer ends of the pin 14 so as to form a connection between the piston rod 10 and the lead bar 5. Leading into the opposite ends of the cylinder 8 are supply pipes 16, 17 having the outer ends thereof connected with the valve casing 18 of a three way valve 19 at diametrically opposite points and connected with the casing 18 at diametrically opposite points and located in a plane intersecting the plane of the adjacent ends of the supply pipes 16 and 17 are supply and exhaust pipes 20, 21 respectively, while rotatably mounted within the casing 18 is a turn plug 22 formed with arcuate passages 23, 24 adapted to establish communicat on etween the supply pipes 20 and 16 and the pipe 17; and exhaust pipe 21 respectively and vice versa, the supply pipe 20 being connected with a suitable source of In practice, when the plug 22 of the three way valve is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the port 23 establishes communication between the pipes 20 and 16, while the port pipe 28, 29 is a check v' 24 establishes communication between the pi cs 17 and 21. In this position of the valve the fluid from the source of supply passes through the pipe 20, passage 23 in the valve plug and pipe 16 into the cylinder 8 behind the piston 9 therein and the forward end of the cylinder communicates with the, atmosphere thpough the pipe 17', passage 24 and pipe 21. On the other hand, when the valve plug 22 is reversed the passage 23 establishes communication between the pipes 20 and 17, while the passage 24 registers with the pipes 20 and 16, thereby placing the forward end of the cylinder in communication with the source of supply and the rear end of the cylinder in commu- H nication with the atmosphere. In the present instance, a dash pot comprising a cyl'in der 25 containing a quantity of oil and the piston 26 mounted within such cylinder and capable of sliding movement therein and formed with restricted apertures whereby the piston may move through the oil within the cylinder, is located behind the cylinder 8 of the motor 7 and connected with the piston 26 of the dash pot is a rod 27 coaxial with the piston rod 10 and extending into the adjacent end of the cylinder 8 and connected. with the piston 9 therein. pipes 28, 29 and the pipe 30 into the rear end of the cylinder 33 of the motor 32 thereby sliding the piston 34 within such cylinder so as to exert a pull upon the rod 41 and so swing the arms 38, 39 about the pivots 40. In the swinging of the arms 38 and 39 under the action of the motor 32 the releasing bar 37 is elevated against the action of the spring 43 and in. moving upwardly elevates the dog 6 by means of the lug 44 thereby releasing the hand lever 2 and lead bar 5 so that the latter may be shifted under the action of the piston 9, piston rod 10 and arms 16 to actuate the valve reversing mechanism. Connected in the pipe 30 is a pressure release valve 45 whereby the air may be released from the forward end of the cylinder of the motor 32 succeeding the operation of the motor apparatus so that the spring 43 will react and restore the releasing bar 37 to normal position.
In the event of failure of the motor apparatus and it is desired to actuate the valve reversing mechanism through the medium of the hand lever 2, the valve 45 is opened thereby placing the rearend of the cylinder 33 of the motor 32 in communication with the atmosphere, and the plug 22 of the three way valve 19 rotated to a position to place one end or the other of the cylinder 8 in communication with the atmosphere, according to the direction of movement of the hand lever and lead bar 5. The hand lever may now be moved in the desired direction to effect the proper operation of the valve reversing mechanism 1. I
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my improved mo tor apparatus will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided motor apparatus for operating the valve reversing mechanism of fluid driven engines whereby such mechanism may be actuated with ease and facility and which may be readily cut out of service in the event of failure thereof so that the valve reversingmechanism may be operated by hand-in the usual manner. I
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification lead bar for operating variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. The combination with a valve reversing mechanism for fluid operated engines, the said mechanism, a hand lever for shifting said bar and a quadrant over which said hand lever is movable, and a locking dog for said hand lever, of a motor, a connection between said motor and bar, a source of supply for said motor, a second motor, a connection between said last motor and source of supply, means controlling communication between the motors and the source of supply, a releasing bar parallel with said quadrant and curved longitudinally to conform to the shape of the quadrant, angle arms pivoted between their ends adjacent to the respective extremities of said quadrant, pivotal connections be tween the upper ends of said arms and the respective extremities of said releasing bar, a rod interconnecting the remaining ends of said arms, and a connection between said rod and said second-named motor whereby said releasing bar will be elevated to disengage the locking dog from the quadrant in the operation of said second-named m0- tor.
2. The combination with a valve reversing mechanism for fluid operated engines, the lead bar for operating said mechanism,
a hand lever for shifting said bar and a quadrant over which said hand lever is movable, and a locking dog for said hand lever, of a motor, a connection between said motor and bar, a source of supply for said motor, a second motor, a connection between sai last motor and source of supply, means controlling communication between the motors and the source of supply, a releasing bar parallel with said quadrant and curved longitudinally to conform to the shape of the quadrant, angle arms pivoted between their ends adjacent to the respective extremities of said quadrant, pivotal connections between the upper ends oi said arms and the respective extremities of said releasing bar, a rod interconnecting the remaining ends 0 said arms, a connection between said rod and said second-named motor whereby said releasing bar will be elevated to disengage the locking dog from the quadrant in the operation of said second-named motor, and a spring connected to one of said angle arms and acting to restore the releasing bar to normal position succeeding the operation of said second-named motor.
