`Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led January 27, 1915. Serial No. M599.
To all whom it may concern.' p
Bc 1t known that l, HARRY F. KNECHT, a citlzen ot' the Unitedl States, residing lat lest Salisbury, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain. ,new and useful Improvements in Supports for Vehicle-Engines, of which 'the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention` relates to supports for vehicle engines and more particularly to an auxiliary support or brace for engines of that type employed upon the Model T, Ford automobile. I
The invention has for its primary object to provide a brace or -support of the above character which will relieve the lower portion of the crank case from strains incident to the vibration of the engine, and thus prevent leakage of the lubricating oil. Itis a further object of my invention to provide an engine brace or support which, when applied, will be very rigid and substantial, and necessitates no alterations inl the ordinary mounting of the engine, as found in motor vehicles ofthe type above .With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the frame of a Ford automobile, showing my improved brace or support arranged in position; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the brace.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the longitudinal side bars of the vehicle frame, and 6 designates the crank case of the engine. This crank case'is provided upon the lower section thereof at oppo-` site sides, with the hangers 7, the upper ends of which are outwardly extended, as at 8, and adapted to be bolted upon the vehicle frame.
My improved brace is constructed of a. single casting and includes a body 9 which may be of any preferred form, said body at its outer end being gradually reduced in width andormed with the arms or extensions 10. These arms areprovided with cylindrical enlargements 11' which areyertically bored to receive the fastening bolts 12..
The body 9 of the brace is centrally provided in its upper portion with a recess indicated at 13 which is designed to receive the lower section of the crank case. The upper edge of the brace body, upon opposite sides of the recess 13, is disposed slightly below the plane of the upper edges of the arms or extensions 10, as indicated at 14. At the outer ends of these edge portions 14, lugs 15 are integrally formed with the brace upon one side thereofand. at the inner ends of the edge portions 14 and contiguous to Patented July d, 1915sthe opening 13, are the laterally extending I lugs 16 which project from the opposite'face of the brace body.'
The brace is arranged as shown in Fig. 1,
with the arms or 'extensions thereof dis osed in the channel frame bars 5 and rigid y secured in' place by means of the bolts 12 which are disposed through the cylindrical enlarge-y ments 11 of said arms and the upper and lower flanges of the frame bars. The engine crank case is now disposed with its lotver section in the recess 13 and theilanges of the case sections extend over the uppgr edge portions 14 of the brace body and uponit is believed that the construction and ar` rangement of the several parts, as well as cev thc advantage thereof, will be clearly and fully understood.
My improved brace relieves the crank case and the frame of the vehicle of undue strain which would otherwise be caused by the vibration of the engine. The necessity ot frequently removing the crank case for the purose of repairing the oil can within the ower section, which is often shaken loose, is also 'obviated by meansof my invention. As the-case will be kept absolutely tight at the joint'betwecn the sections thereof, escape or waste of the oil is prevented.
It will be noted that the invention is of P'atent'sz;
v'1. The combination with a vehicle frame such form and construction, the same may be readily applied to the frame of the vehicle without necessitating any changes 1n its construction, or in the construction of and engiL. crank case, of a transverse brace or support"'provided Vwith arms at its ends bolted to the frame bars,.said brace having a central recess in its upper edge to receivethe 2.5: lower ysection of the crank case, the flanges of the' crank case sections engaging upon the 11oper'edge of the brace upon opposite sides of the recess, and lugs formed upon the brace body to which said fianges are bolted. 2. The combination with a vehicle frame and crank case provided upon its lower section at opposite sides with hangers, of n transverse brace having arms. -formed upon its ends bolted to the longitudinal frame lbars, said brace being also provided with n central recess in its upper portion to receive the lower section of the crank case, and spaced lugs projecting from the opposite faces of the brace at its upper edge and on oppositev sides of said recess, the joint flanges of the crank case extending over said` lugs and being bolted thereto, the outer ends of the hangers resting upon the outer ends of the longitudinal franiebars in spaced relation to the arms of the brace and being bolted to said bers. In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
