GEORGE A. TRUE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO NORTHERN ENGINEERING WORKS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
CRANE.
Application filed August 14, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. TRUE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cranes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to cranes and more particularly to ladle cranes.
The invention resides in providing the trolley carrying the main hoist with an auxiliary hoist arranged on a traveling carriage which is mounted upon the main trolley, and further in the peculiar construction and combination of parts as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation of a ladle crane embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the main trolley; and Fig. 3 illustrates a modification.
A represents the main tracks usually running lengthwise of the building and B the traveling bridge thereon having suitable rails on its girders for the trolley C which carries the main hoisting mechanism D.
WVith this type of ladle crane it is desirable to have an auxiliary hoist for tipping the ladle upon the same trolley as the main hoisting mechanism. Usually the trolley carrying the main hoist is provided with a stationary auxiliary hoist positioned adjacent one end of the trolley but with such an arrangement the ladle may be turned or tipped in one direction only. For certain uses however, it is necessary to have the hoisting mechanism so constructed as to permit the ladle to be tipped in different directions. I have accomplished this result by mounting the auxiliary hoist upon a carriage or auxiliary trolley which travels upon a track carried by the main trolley.
The auxiliary trolley and the track therefor may be of various constructions but preferably the auxiliary trolley E is of the monorail type and the track F for the auxiliary trolley is formed by an I-beam secured to and suspended from the beams G of the main trolley C. The track F may be either straight or curved. In Fig. 2 the auxiliary track is shown as straight and extending parallel to the rails for the main trolley,
Specification of Letters Patent.

while in Fig. 3 a circular track F is illustrated which permits the ladle to be tipped in any direction.
By suspending the track for the auxiliary trolley from the frame of the main trolley not only are the auxiliary trolley and its track so arranged as not to interfere with the mechanism carried by the main trolley but the track for the auxiliary trolley can be readily applied to the constructions of main trolley now in general use.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. I11 a ladle crane, the combination with a movable trolley including a frame and a main hoist carried by said frame and fixed in relation thereto, of a track upon the trolley and extending upon opposite sides of the main hoist, a traveling carriage mounted on said track, and an auxiliary hoist upon said carriage, said traveling carriage being actuable to variably position the auxiliary hoist upon either side of the main hoist.
2. In a ladle crane, the combination with a movable trolley including a frame and a main hoist carried by and fixed in relation to the frame, of a track secured to and suspended from the trolley frame and extending upon opposite sides of the main hoist, a traveling carriage mounted on said track, and an auxiliary hoist upon said carriage, said traveling carriage being free to travel to variably position the auxiliary hoist upon either side of the main hoist.
3. In a ladle crane, the combination with a movable trolley and a main hoist carried thereby, of a substantially arcuate track carried by the trolley, a traveling carriage mounted upon said track, and an auxiliary hoist upon the carriage.
l. In a ladle crane, the combination with a movable trolley and a main hoist carried thereby, of a substantially arcuate track suspended from the trolley, having the main hoist substantially vertically alined with its center, a carriage mounted to travel on said track, and an auxiliary hoist upon the carriage.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. TRUE.
