. Be it known that I, MICHAEL G. DELANEY,
. a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne f and State of -Michigan,'have invented cerfiiiin-new and ,usefullmprovements in Regutors for Film-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the operation of machines for project- I ingpictures from films such as areincommen use for moving picture exhibits, .it is desirable, in order that a clear projection of the picture maybe made that the filmbe held in fixed relation to .the lanternvlens. This is provided for in amanner-by passing the film. wound from the real or container over suitable guiding mechanism but if the container from which the film is drawn is retarded, the film is likely to be injured by the undue strain. This invention relates to regulatingmeans whereby an even tension is maintained in the film as it passes from the magazine or container through the, projecting machine, receiving roll or other container whereby strain on the film as it crosses the lantern or slide opening is prevented.
The invention consists in the matters here inafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, a reel 1 of any preferred type, that is herein shown as adapted to deliver from the interior turns of a coiled film 2, is so mounted in a suitable casing 3 that the film is drawn therefrom.

The mechanism may be operated manually as herein indicated through the medium of a crank handle 11. In the normal condition of the apparatus and its normal operation, rotation of the crank handle draws the film from the reel or container 1 downwardly through the guides and guide rolls, the reel 1" delivering the ribbon as needed. If for any reason, the filID'lS frictionally retarded, a controlling roller 12 that is normally held by a tension spring 13 against the film is moved backward by the strain on the filmas the latter tightens so that a stem 14 of a yoke on which the roll .12 is mounted, moves a connecting bridge piece 15 or the like between a pair of spring fingers 16 or. other terminals. The latter are in series through a suitable electric circuit indicated diagrammatically at 17 with an electric battery or other generator therein. The electric circuit also ncludes the field coils 18 of a magnetically thrown clutch.
as by a chain 25, beveled gear train 26 and sprocket and chain connections 27 with the shaft turned by the crank handle 11 so that when the clutch is thrown in the reel 1 revolves in positive relation to the projecting mechanism and, thereby relieves the strain on the film. When the film slackens, the connecting bridge 15 'is moved out by the spring 13, and the clutch thereby released.
In Fig. {1, the clutch 22 with the tension roller 12, terminals 15 and 16, and bridge piece 14, is shown as operating to couple a carrier shaft 28 to a motor 29 that is mounted on a bracket 30 or other convenient support whereby the carrier is rotated independently of the film projecting machine, whenever the film becomes too taut.
As a result of this construction any retardation of the film above the normal as it passes out of the magazine or container,
shifts the governing roll and thereby closes the electric circuit This automatically throws the clutch into engagement and causes positive rotation of the film reel or containing magazine and the reel projecting mechanism on which vthe film "is being wound. This prevents anyundue strain of and injury to the film. The device does not add materially to the complexity of mechanism and is afi'ective to produce the desired result.
Obviously, changes in the details of con struction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts. r

The combination with a film holder and a projecting machine adapted to draw a film therefrom, of normally disconnectedv mechanism for positively discharging a film from the holder, and means adapted to be controlled by a film passing to the machine for connecting the mechanism when the tension of the film is abnormal.
