To all 107mm 'it may concern Be it known that I, BYRON R. BARBER, a
,citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closure devices for open-mouthed receptacles, such as vulcanizcrs, and the object thereof is to provide a closure for a vulcanizer which will effectually seal it and which can be readily positioned and removed from the vulcanizer and in which the mechanism for locking the closure device is extremely simple and capable of great efficiency in providing a strong, tight joint between the closure member and the vulcanizer.
With the foregoing, and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.
In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the open-mouthed end of a vulcanizer embodying my invention; Fig. 2, is a similar view of the open end of the closure member for the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a longitudinal, sectional View of the vulcanizer and closure member therefor united taken on lines A-of Figs. 1 and 2; and, Fig. 4, is a view similar to Fig. 3 taken on lines B of Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail the reference numeral l denotes the body of the vulcanizer which is provided with one open end 2. Secured by holding devices 3 to the outer face of the open end of the vulcanizer is an annular coupling member 4 comprising an annulus 5 through which the holding members 3 extend. From this annulus projects laterally and'in parallelism with the wall of the vulcanizer an outwardly offset portion 6 from which extends an integral, radial flange 7 from which project a plurality of integrally-formed, laterally-extending, inturned, L-shaped lugs 11. front face of the radial flange 7 constitutes a bearing face to receive the closure member to be described. rlhis face of the radial flange 7 is provided with an annular channel in which is placed a packing ring 9. rlhe l.-shaped lugs 1l provide a plurality of regularly-recurring notches 10 between them. The L-shaped lugs and the notches are preferably all of nearly equal width and alternately arranged with respect to each other. The inner face of the portion G is provided with a plurality of inwardly-eXtending lugs 12 spaced from each other to provide notches 13 between them. The lugs 12 and notches 13 are approximately of about the same circumferential width and they extend in alternation entirely around the inner portion of the member 6. The lugs 12 are so positioned as to be in radial alinement with the notches 10 and the lugs 11 between the notches 10 are in radial alineuient with the notches 13 between the lugs 12.
The closure device embodies the usual head 20 to which is secured by holding devices 21 an annular coupling member 22 complementary to the coupling member 4. The coupling member 22 comprises a sleevelike portion 23 which bears on the outer face of its projecting end a series of outwardlyprojecting lugs 24 spaced from each other to provide notches 25 between them. The lugs 24 are of a proper width to be received in the notches 10 and the notches 25 between the-lugs 24 are of a proper width to receive the hook-shaped lugs 1l on the member 4:. The sleeve-like portion 23 is rovided with an inwardly-projecting radial flange 26 from the inner portion of which extends a lateral flange 27 parallel with the outer wall of the sleeve 23. At the outer end of the lateral flange 27 is a circumferential]y-extending series of outwardly and radiallyprojecting hook-shaped lugs 28 spaced from each other to provide notches 29 betweenI them. The notches 29 are of a proper width to receive the inwardly-projccting lugs 12 on the member 4 and the lugs 28 are of a proper width to be received inthe notches 13 of that member. The lugs 12 are positioned away from the front face of the ring-shaped member 5 to provide a circuinferentiaily-extending channel 30. The inwaidly-extending hook-shaped lugs 11 are positioned away from the face of the radial flange 7 to provide a similar channel 32 and the lugs 2S are positioned away from the radial flange 26 to provide a similar channel 33. The lugs 28 on the closure member are in radial alinement with the notches 25 and the notches 24 are in radial alinement with the notches 29.
The Closure member-is positioned by placing it in front of the open end of the vulcanizer so that the two coupling members 4 and 22 are in horizontal alinement with the lugs 24 in alinement with the notches 10, the.
notches 25 in alinement with the hookshaped lugs 11, the hook-shaped lugs 28 in alinement with the Anotches 13 and the lugs 12 in alinement with the notches 29. As before stated, the notches of one member are of a proper width to receive the respective lugs of the other member, and the closure member is then capable of being fitted to place, the lugs 24 being received in the channel 32, the lugs 12 in the channel 33 and the lugs 28 in the channel 30. The closure memberis then given a partial rotation to permitthe various lugs to interlock tol prevent the closure member from being withdrawn from position without imparting thereto a partial rotation, the' locking being accomplished by an interlocking engagement between the lugs 24 and 11, and between the lugs 12 and 28.
The amount of clearance which exists between the various lugs and the notches which receive them is very slight, and little or no loss of strength is occasioned by cutting the flanges to provide lugsv and notches.
I claim v 1. The combination of an open-mouthed vulcanizer provided with a ring-shaped couplingmember at the open end thereof, saidcouplmg member provided with an. .outwardly-projecting radial flange, a plurality of inturned hookshaped integral lugs formed on the front face of said flange and spaced apart to provide notches between them, the inner face of said coupling member further provided with a plurality of inwardly-projecting lugs spaced apart to provide notches between them, and a closure member therefor provided with a ringshaped coupling member the outer-face of which is fashioned with a plurality of outwardly-projecting lugs spaced apart to provide notches between and adapted to be received in the irst-mentioned notches on said vulcaniz'er, an inwardly-projecting L-shaped integral flange on said closure member rovided with a plurality of outwardly-prepoting lu'gs spaced apart to provide notches between them, said lu gs adapted to be received in the second series of notches on said vulcanizer, the outwardly-projecting lugs on the closure member adapted to interlock behind the inturned hook-shaped lugs on the vulcanizer and the inwardly-extending lugs on the vulcanizer adapted to interlock behind the outwardly-extending hook-shaped lugs on the closure member when said closure member is given a partial rotation.
2. The combination of an open-end vulcanizer and a closure therefor, one of which is provided with a series of outwardly-projecting lugs spaced apart to provide notches, a second series of outwardly-projecting lugs carried by said member, the other member provided with two series of inwardly-projecting lugs the members of each series spaced apart to provide notches, the projecting lugs of the first member adapted to be passed through 'the notches of the other member and interlock with the lugs thereof.
3. The combination of a vulcanizer and a closure member therefor, one of said members provided with two circumferentiallyextending series of outwardly-extending lugs, the members of the two series being spaced from each other and the members of each series of lugs being spaced from the coadjacent members of each series to provide notches, lthe -other member provided with two series of inwardly-extending lugs the members of the two series being spaced apart and the lugs in each series being spaced from each other to provide notches, the outwardly-extending lugs of one member adapted to be passed through the notches of the other memberand to interlock with the lugs thereof when one member is partially revolved with respect to the other member.
4. A coupling device for a vulcanizer and its head, comprising two annularly formed members one of which is provided with two series of circumferentially-extending spaced lugs extending outwardly, the other member provided with two series of spaced lugs eX- tending inwardly, all f of said lugs being spaced apart to provide notches between them to permit the outwardly-extending lugs of one member to pass through the notches in the other member and to interlock with the lugs thereof.
