Description

WILLIAM A. MYERS.
Improvement in Grain-Separating and Cleaning Attachments for Thrashing-Machines.
Patented May 2,1871.
Witnesses hated dffirr,
,] fitnihzli fitter WILLIAM A. MYERS. OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 114,463, dated May 2, 1871.
lMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-SEPARATING AND CLEANING ATTACHMENTS-TO THRASHING- MACHINES.
The :schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To It'll whom it may concern it was necessary to put an extra pulley on the cylinder-shaft to drive the fan, and an extra shaft on the thrasher-frame to work the shaker.
Tbe'object of my invention is so to construct the separator and cleaner that they may be attached to the old-fashioned thrashers without altering the thrashers; and
My improvement consists in a novel combination of mechanism, hereinafter specified, for driving'both the fan and the separator from a cross-shaft on the separator-fi-ame.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a plan, and
Figure 2 an elevation of my improved attachment.
A frame, A, supports a fan, B, and a shakingscreeu, O.
The construction of the separating devices is well known and needs no description.
To carry out niy improvement I mount a crossshaft, D, in suitable hearings in the frame.
This shaft is driven by a band, (i, from a pulley on the thrashing-cylinder, which baud encircles a pulley, D, on the shaft.
The fan is driven by a band, 0, encircling a pulley, E, on the same shaft D, but at-the end opposite that on which the pulley D is mounted.
The shaker O is vibrated by pitmen F F driven by cranks or crank-pins f on shaft D.
By this arrangement all the separating and cleaning mechanism is driven from the shaft D, and as the shaker is driven from both ends of said shaft the strain is less and the motion more uniform than if driven from one end only.
My improved attachment can be secured to the thrasber by hooks, and is driven by a band from the pulley, which usually would drive the fan.
I do not, broadly, claim driving a separator and cleaner from a cross-shaft; neither do I claim, broadly, the combination of a separator and a cleaner.
I claim as my invention-- The separating and cleaning attachment for thrashers herein described, consisting of the frame A, the separator O, the cleaner, the cross-shaft D, the two pi'tmen F for driving the shaker, the pulley E on the cross-shaft, and the fan, all these parts being combined, constructed, and arranged as described for joint operation.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
- WILLIAM A. MYERS.
