WILLIAM F. HARBRECHT, F SANIDUKY, OHIO, ASSIG-NOB TO HINDE & DAUCH PAPER I COMPANY, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO, A QORPOTION OF OHIO.
v AQPPABATUS FOR MANUFACTURING CORRUGATED PAPER-BOARD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HAR: BRECHT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Manufacturing Corrugated Paper-Board, of which the following is a specification, reference'being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to apparatus for. the manufacture of corrugated paper board and moreparticularly to that type known. as
single, face board in which the corrugated strip is glued to a facing strip arranged on one side only.
As heretofore manufactured it has been customary to first corrugate the strip by passing the same over fluted rolls which are heated to dry the paper and to give permanentfihape to the corrugations, and second, to feed the corrugated strip thus formed difiectly to the facing 'mechanism. It has been found however, that there is not sufficient time involved in which the paper is in contact with the heated rolls to thoroughly extract the moisture and consequently the corrugations after disengagement from the roll often lose their shape to greater or less extent before attachment to the facing strip.
It is the object of the invention to avoid this difliculty by providing means intermediate the corrugated rolls and the facing mechanism for thoroughly drying the corrugated strip, the construction being as follows:
In the drawing the machine is represented in side elevation. I
A is a suitable frame work on which is mounted the .corrugating cylinders or rolls B to which the paper strip is fed from a roll C and over an intermediate guide roll D.
E is the glue applying. roll which is mounted upon the frame A, and F is the reel of facing paper which is fed over guide rolls G and G into contact with one face of the corrugated strip previously coated with glue by the roll E.
To effect the thorough drying of-the corrugated strip before it is fed to the glue applyingroll, I arrange adjacent to the delivery corrugatin roll B, a larger drum H, around the perip cry of. which the strip is fed. This drum is of suficient size to hold Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented June 29, H915 Application filed march 1c, 1911. Serial to. 615,420.
the strip in contact therewith for a desired time interval, and to' assist in the drying the drum is heated by. suitable means such as steam introduced therein. The drum H is driven at the same peripheral speed as the rolls B and is shown through the medium of a chain I engaging sprockets J and K respectively connected to the roll and drum shaft; Thus in operation the strip when de:
livered by the roll'B will be held in contact with the heated drum without any distorting stress being. applied to change the shape of the corrugations. By the time the strip is completely wound around the drum it is thoroughly dried, and when subjected to the mechanicalaction of the glue applying roll and the facing mechanism willsn'ot be changed'in form.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with means for corrugating a paper strip, of a relatively large heated drum having a plain surface to which 7 the unfaced corrugated strip is directly fed from the corrugating means and around \vhichthe unfaced strip passes, and means other than the strip for driving said drum at the same peripheral speed as the strip.
2. The combination with means for corrugating a paper strip, of a traveling drying surface independent of the corrugating means to which the unfaced strip is directly fed, and an equalizing drive mechanism between said corrugating means and said traveling drying surface for maintaining equal speed of'the portions of said corrugating means and drying surface in contact with the strip.
3. The combination with means forcorrugating a paper strip, of a plain surface heated drum above said means to which the unfaced strip is fed, the points of delivery of the strip to and from the drum being adjacent, means for applying adhesive to the strip after its delivery from the drum, and means for applying a facing to the. strip after application of the-adhesive.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. HARBRECHT.
