THE NORRIS PEITERS cm, PHoTaL/nwo WASHING-ION. D, c.
JOSEPH. THEBAULT, OF CENTRAL FALLS, RHODE ISLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patigntgfl Ju 119; 29, 1915.
Application filed June 16, 1914. Serial No. 845,375.
To all whom it may concern y Be it known that I, JOSEPH THEBAULT,
citizen of the United States, residing at Central Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have inyented new and useful Improvements in Sp ndles, of which the following is a specificat on.
My present invention pertains to spindles, and consists in the peculiar and advantageous spindle, hereinafter described and claimed, constructed with a view to be ng mounted in a spinning machine to receive filling yarn and to then be placed in a shuttle and serve the purpose of a spindle 1n the shuttle, thereby obviating the use of a bobbin and lessening the liability of the inner layers of yarn being injured as generally occurs when a cop is removed from the spindle of a spinning machine and is placed upon the spindle of an ordinary shuttle.
In the accompanying drawings which are hereby made a part hereof; Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, comprising a spindle constructed in accordance with my invention and a spindle holder adapted to form a permanent part of a spinning machine; it being understood that the said elements may be used in a spinning machine in a horizontal position, in a vertical position or in any other position compatible with the purpose of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing my novel spindle as properly positioned and fastened in a shuttle body. Fig. 3 illustrates the relative arrangement of the spindle holder in the shuttle body and the spindle precedent to the securing of the latter in the shuttle body. Fig. 1 is a view of the spindle holder. Fig. 5 is a view illustrating the catches of the holder as engaging the flange of the spindle. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the spindle, showing the recesses in the flange thereof to receive the said catches.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements, my invention comprises a spindle holder 1, designed to form part of a spinning machine. The said holder is provided with a stem 2, and said stem is designed to fit snugly on the stem 3 of a whirl 4c. These parts may be arranged in a horizontal position, as shown or in a vertical position without affecting my invention. In the holder 1 is an inner seat 5 and an outer seat 6, the outer seat being provided at diametrically oppositepoints in its side wall with recesses 7 for the reception of the heads of catches 8, the inner ends of the said heads being beveled as indicated by 9 for a purpose presently set forth.
The shuttle body 10 for use in carrying out my invention is equipped with a spring backed spindle holder 11 and transverse rods 12 and 13.
My novel spindle 14 is provided with a tip 15 of any suitable description, and is gradually diminished in diameter from the said tip to the flange which is arranged at an intermediate point in the length of the spindle, the described taper of the spindle being resorted to in order to enable it to better hold yarn thereon. The flange of the spindle is preferably stepped as shown and comprises a comparatively small portion 16, designed to snugly occupy the inner seat 5 of the holder 1, and a large portion 17 designed to snugly rest in the outer seat 6 of the holder. In the large portion 17 of the stepped flange notches 18 are provided as shown for the reception of the heads of the catches 8 so as to enable the said catches in practice to rest flush with the outer side of the flange portion 17. Extending from the inner side of the flange on the spindle is a spindle portion 19, notched at 20 and 21 to receive the rods 12 and 13, respectively, when the spindle portion 19 is socketed in the holder 11 of the shuttle body and is swung with said holder into the position shown in Fig. 2.
In the practical use of, my improvement the spindle while in the holder 1 in a spinning machine is filled with yarn, and the said spindle is then removed from the holder 1 and is placed as shown in Fig. 2 in a shuttle body so as to give off yarn in the con ventional manner incidental to the movements of the shuttle in a loom.
I prefer to employ the catches 8 for securing the spindle in the holder 1 inasmuch as the said catches are reliable in operation and can be readily moved outwardly to permit of the withdrawal of the spindle from the holder. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the em ployment of the said catches as any-other means may be employed for detachably retaining the spindle in the holder and assuring the rotation of the spindle with the holder having a seat and a tubular stem or extension, a spindle having a flange constructed and arranged to occupy 1Stld :seat and also hav1ng a notched portion or extension arranged to occupy said tubular stern or extension, and means carrledby the holder for detachably securing the flange of the spindlein the seat of the holder and causing the holder and spindle to-rotate'together.
Copies 01 this patent may be obtained for '2. In a detachable connection of a spindle holder and a spindle, the combination of a holder having a seat and notches in the Wall of the seat :and beveled catches resting in said notches and also having a tubular stem 'orextension, and a spindle having a flange constructed and arranged to occupy the seat in the holder and peripheral notches in the outer side of said flange to receive the catches on theholder and further having a notched portion or extension arranged to occupy said tubular stem or extension.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence e of two: subscribing witnesses.
