SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR TROLLEY-RAIL SWITCHES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEwIs J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bergen, in the county of Genessee and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Trolley-Rail Switches, of which the following is a specification.

This inventionrelates to improvements in safety devices for trolley rail switches and has for its primary object the provision of a structure whereby the wheels of a carriage are positively held against running into an open switch.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure whereby the free end of the switch is rigidly held against downward movement when sustaining the weight of the carriage.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a structure which will gravitate to operative position simultaneously with the opening of the switch.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an article which can be cast into its formation and readily delivered from the mold for producing an inexpensive article.

The invention consistsin the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trolley rail switch, showing the safety device in operative position. Fig. 2 is a view showing the safety device supporting one end of the switch. Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2 showing the safety device in an inoperative position and supporting one end of the switch. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 showing the safety device in an op- Spcification of Letters Patent.

Fig. 6 is a perspective vice whichis cast U-shaped in cross section so as to contact with the opposite sides of the rail 2 when pivotally connected as shown at 5. The metal at the juncture of the forward portion of one side 6 of the casting with the forward portion of the side 7 forms a shoulder 8 which is adapted to contact with the end of the rail 2 for limiting the swinging movement of the device from its pivot 5 when gravitating to a position for obstructing passage over the rail ends.

In Fig. 2, I have shown a portion of the device supporting one end of the switch when sustaining the weight of the carriage and when in this position, the flat bottom portion 9 contacts with the flat under surface of the rail end 2, thus the switch end is held against relative movement with relation to the rail end 2.

I/Vhat is claimed is:

In combination with a pair of fixed rails and a switch rail, of a safety device therefor comprising a casting pivotally connected to one of said fixed rails and adapted to support one end of said switch when in an operative position, said casting being U- shaped in cross section so as to contact with the sides of one of said fixed rails for preventing lateral movement of the casting and to limit the vertical movement of the latter.
