LIonnL BULL, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

Specification of Letters Patent. v Patented June 29, 1915.
Application filed Apri124, 1914. Serial No. 834,077.
Be it known that I, LIONEL BULn, a. subject of the King of England, residmg at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of'Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Teat-Cups, of which the The object of my invention is to provide a tube that will be simple and economical in construction, and be-easy to keep in a. perfectly clean and sanitary condition, substantially as hereinafter fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved teat-cup. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on dotted line 83, Fi 2.
In the drawings, A represents the tubular metal casing of the tea'tcup. This casing tapers slightly from its upper wider end to its lower narrower end,'and its upper end a is exteriorly threaded and made thicker to" narrow the entrance to'the bore thereof and to widen the upper edge of the same, so as to provide a broad bearing surface for the outwardly flaring circumferential flange projecting from the upper end I) of a cylindrical rubber tube B. This tube B is open at both ends and is of a diameter less than the upper end or mouth of the bore of casing A, and is of such length that its lower end extends down through and out of the lower or dischar e end of the casing, and said tube 13 secured in a position concentrlc to the axis of the casingby means of an annular cap C which is screwed down over the upper end thereof and has an inwardly pro- 'thercof thicker.
j ecting flange o that provides an inner shoulder that-engages the flange b of the tube and clamps the. same against the broader edge of the upper end of the casing sufii- Cleilltly tight to makethe joint air and water tig t. I
The bore of the lower end of easing A is restricted by -making the annular walls At one side of this lower annular edge it is provided with a stub D which has a nipple d inserted longitudinally into a suitable opening in the end thereof,
which nipple communicates with the annularchamber around tube B and connects] the same to the adjacent endof a flexible pipe of a pulsator (not shown).
I insert in-the lower end of'the elastic tube 13 the widened upper end 6 of another nipple E, and the diameter of this wider upper portion 6 is such as to make it necessary to distend the lower end of tube B to such an extent as to engage the inner circume ference ofthe lower end of the bore of the casing A, and seal the same so as to make an air tight joint for the annular chamber between the tube B and the casing A, substantially as shown in the drawings.
The mouth or upper end of the tube B is,
apron E, which extends from the inner angle of the mouth of the tube at the point where the upper surface of the flange meets the same down into the bore of the tube a. short distance, substantially as shown in the drawings.
In operation, the teat of the cow is inserted down through the central opening of the cap G into the bore of the elastic tube B which will stretch suflicient to accommodate the same. The pulsator of the milking machine isthen put in operation and the annular chamber between casing A and the outer circumference of said tube is'alternately exhausted and charged by the introduction of more air therein; in other words,
an alternate condition of vacuum and pie num is created in this annular chamber which causes the tube B to be compressed so as to compress the teat of the cow and then to expand to its normal circumference so as to suck the milk from the cow, substantially in the same manner as nowmanipulated by hand.
A teat-cup for a milking machine comprising an elastic cylindrical tube made open at its ends and having a funnel shaped preferably, provided with a funnel-shaped apron extending into the mouth of the same In wnness whereof I have hereunto set n'ndhaving a circumfeyential end flange pl'o- .m hand this 15th day 0 Apnl, 1914. 1ect1ng thvlsefrorn, a hollow metal casing; T 1 T through whlch szud tube extends, and means L10) 4 BL engaging the ends of smd tube, that attach VIIZTIGSSPS:
the ends of send tube to the ends of said 'Fnmn; D.THO1\IASON,
casing. FLORENCE MITCHELL.
