Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirring Presser-Feet for Sewing-Machines, of which the'following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyin'g drawings and to the let- 1O ters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The presser bar 3 is also mounted in the usual manner, in the head of the machine, and is lifted by the usualhand lever 4.. At the lower end of the'presser bar 3 is a presser foot 5. ' The main-presser foot 5 is formed Withsta main section which is attached to the presser bar and which is so. constructed as to cause the fabric enga ed thereby tQQ-be shirred. This section of the foot is formed with a recess on its under face in which ism placed a part 18. The part 18 is carried by i a post 29 which extends up through a collar- 31 carried in the shank ofthe Presser foot and a pin 30 passes through an openingin the post and is mounted in said shank. his 15 opening in the post is slightly larger than the'dialneter of the pin, which permits of certain limited adjustment of; the post in the collar. A screw 31 engages the post and rests on the upper-end of, the collar 31. Said screw is provided with ua'groove 32 which engages a fixed part on the shank, and
which preventse'ndwise movement of the screw. By adjusting the screw 31, the plate or part 18 may be adjusted toward and from 8 the lower face of the resser foot. If this part is so adjusted as to be flush with the lower face of the presser foot, no shirring action will occur. When, however, it is adjusted so as to form a space or recess in rear of the part of the presser-foot through which the need e extends, then the fabric as it is being stitched will pile up or be gathered at the point of stitching. This occurs'by reason of the fact that the feed dog coiiperating with the presser foot clamps and feeds the-fabric in advance of the needle slightly faster than in rear of theneedle. This particular form of shirring presser foot per se formsjno part of my present inven- 1 tion, but is shown, described and claimed in the application of R. G. Woodward, filed May 5th, 1908, Serial No. 430,899.
The presser foot 5, in addition to the sec- :tion which is provided with means for shir- 'ringthe fabric, is also provided with an auxiliary foot 0 whiclnis adaptedto engage a heading which is to be stitehed to the hirred fabric.
I have shown theiabove described, 311) feature of the present invention is broadly some means for shirring the fabric at the same time that the shirred strip is provided with a heading. The auxiliary foot 0 is provided with a post I) which extends up through a suitable opening in a block a, secured to the presser foot 5 1n any suitable The block a is provided with a plate 7 which is secured thereto by suitable screws 0. The plate f has a rearwardly projecting lug g. A sprlng c encircles a headed screw h threaded in the lug g, and is supported thereby; Said spring extends upwardly through a recess in the rear side of the block a and is then coiled and extends laterally so as'to rest upon the t op'of the post I). A screw 71 threaded through the plate f, bears against the upwardly extending shank of the spring 2', and serves as a means whereby the tension of the spring 75 on the post 6 may be varied.
The post I) is also provided with a pin 6 which serves to limit the downward movement of said post when the presser bar is lifted. 'The auxiliary .foot 0 is located close to the main foot 5, andis provided with two needle holes as herein shown. A tape guide (Z is carried by the auxiliary foot 0 and has an opening leading down through the foot. 011 the under side, the auxiliary foot 0 is provided with a recess a, which is substantially the width of the tape passing from the tape guide and extends to the rear edge of the auxiliary foot, thus forming a guiding recess for the tape.
As above noted, my invention is especially adapted for shirring a strip such as S and stitching the same to a body fabric such as B, and covering the edges of the body fabric and shirred strip by means of a strip or tape T all of which is clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 8. As a means for guiding a body fabric and folding the edge thereof, I have provided an edge guide 20 which is pivoted at 21 to a plate 22, adjustably attached to the work plate of the machine, by screws 23.
The edge guide 20 is provided with a folder 24 so that as the body fabric passes through the guide, the edge thereof will-be folded back upon itself as clearly shown in Fig. 8. Mounted on the guide for the body fabric, is an edge guide 95 for the strip to be shirred. Said guide 25 is 'adjustably secured to the guide 20 by means of a screw 26, and is provided at its forward end with a backwardly turned lip 27 forming a guiding recess for the strip to be shirred.
Itis noted that the guide for the shirring strip is so located that the edge of the strip being Shirred is also led underneath the auxiliar presser foot 0 and between the needle slots therein so that when the tape is stitched at its edges, to the body fabric and theshirred strip, the edge of said shirred strip is underneath said tape.
The guide for'the body fabric and the guide for the shirred strip can of course, be
adjusted so as to secure the fabrics togethe in anydesired relation.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A sewing machine for shirring a fabric and forming a heading thereon, including in combination a pluralityof needles 2. main presser foot, means carried thereon whereby the fabric is shirred, and an auxiliary presser foot arranged at one side of the main presser foot, and acting on the heading. 11. The combination of a main shirring presser foot, having a relatively fixed portion and an adjustable portion in rear of said relatively fixed portion and a tape guid ing presser foot located at one side of said main presser foot and supported thereby.
12. The combination of a main shirring presser foot, having a relatively fixed portion, an adjustable portion in rear thereof, a block carried by said main presser foot, an auxiliary presser foot carrying a tape guide yieldingly supported by said block.
13. A sewing machine including in combination a main presser foot having means for shirring a fabric, an auxiliary prosser foot, a doubled edge folder carried by said auxiliary presser foot and a second folding device arranged to deliver its fold underneath the fold of the top folder.

A sewing machine for shirring and heading a fabric including a main presser foot having means for shirringsaid fabric, an auxiliary presser foot, a double edge folder carried by said auxiliary presser foot, a folding guide arranged to direct a folded fabric underneath said auxiliary presser foot and an edge guide for guiding the strip to be shirred so that its edge is led underneath said auxiliary presser foot, whereby said edge is iiiclosed between the two folded strips.
