T piovonl the rebounding of the paper su 'iport when its forward movement is suddenly checked I have provided a stop which is arranged adjacent tothe track 13 and have mounted on the paper support a detent which cooperates with the stop to prevent the return movement of the paper support. If the device is intended to operate to prevent the rebound of the paper support at the end of the track only, a single stop will answer but in the present instance the device is designed for use with a tabulating device or other device in which the movement of the paper support may be checked at any point between the two extremes of its movement and I have, therefore, provided a stop in the form of a rack or toothed bar 17 which is arranged parallel with the track 13 and, in the present instance, is in the form of a separate bar rigidly supported adjacent to one of the track members. It will be obvious, however, that the rack may be formed in any suitable manner.
Cooperating with the rack is a detent or pawl 18 pivotally mounted on an axis extending transversely to the line of movement of the paper support and adapted to travel over the teeth of the rack 17. Preferably, the teeth and the nose of the pawl are inclined sharply in the direction of travel of the carriage so that the pawl will ride lightly over the teeth and the device will offer no appreciable resistance to the forward movement of the carriage. It will be apparent that this device will act to prevent return movement or rebounding of the paper support at any point along the length of the track. Inasmuch as the teeth are short the detent will always be close to the vertical face of one of the teeth and, consequently, no appreciable movement will be imparted to the paper support to cause the detent to cn gage its tooth. The detent is operable to enable the paper support to he released so that it may be caused to return to its initial position along with the paper carriage. To this end an actuating device is connected with the detent and is arranged close to the front of the machine where it can be readily actuated by the operator. Further it is preferable that this actuhting device he normally connected with that part of the paper carriage by means of which its return move ment is controlled so that the detent will be automatically operated to release the paper carriage when this controlling device is operated to return the paper carriage to its initial position. As here shown the det-ent or pawl 18 is mounted on a shaft 19 journaled in hearings 20 mounted on. the lower portion of the paper support and extending transversely to its line of travel. A spring 21 is coiled about the shaft to hold the detent normally in engagement with the rack. Rigidly secured to the shaft 19 is a finger 22 arranged to be engaged by a second finger 23 which is mounted on an axis extendin parallel with the line of travel of the paper support and is so arranged that when it engages the finger it will rock the shaft 1.9 in a direction to lift the pawl out of engagement with the rack and thereby release the paper support. The finger 23 is here shown as mounted on a shaft 24 extending lengthwise of the paper support and journaled at its ends in bearings arranged near the shut t 19 and the rear end of the paper supporting frame, respectively. To this shaft 24 is so cured an arm 25, the free end of which is connected by a link or connecting rod 26 with a second arm 27 secured to a hollow shaft 28 journaled on a bearing stud 29 carried by the upper portion of the rear frame member of the paper support. A third arm 30 is secured to the shaft and has pivotally connected thereto a rod 31 which extends forwardly to a point near the front of the typewriter where it may be actuated to impart rocking movement to the shaft 2 and thereby cause the detent to be moved into its inoperative position, Preferably means are provided for connecting the rod l 31 "w th the carriage return lever T 0 this end the forward part of the rod 31 is pro vided with a slot 32 adapted to extend about the stud 10 on which is mounted the line spacing pawl 7 and to which stud movement is imparted upon each movement of the carriage return and line spacing lever Consequently, each movement of this lever is imparted to the rod 21 and through the conm- -ting devices to the pawl 18. lit is sometimes dcsirali le, however, to adiust the paper c:,1rriag imleyurmleutly' of the carriage return lover and l have therefore provided the forward end of the rod 31 with a finger piece 33 so arranged that it can be readily engaged by the thumb or finger of the typist to lift the rod 31 out of engage-- ment with the stud l0 and to impart operative movement to the rod, which movement will actuate the detent to release the paper suppornthercby permitting the adjustment of the carriage. It will be further noted that the rod 31 is of a light and more or less resilient character and that its connections are such that it "will spring or bend slightly to permit the paper carriage to be moved relatively to the paper support, this movement of the rarriage being permitted by the resilient character of the driving connection 16 between the paper carriage and the paper support. Thus, the carriage can be spaced hack one or two spaces, by the use o the back spacing lover or otherwise, without releasing the paper support, thus avoiding the necessity of actuating the detent whenever the buck-spacing lever is operated.
The operation of the device will be readily Understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that I have provided a very simple device for preventing the rebounding of the paper support; which can be readily actuated either by hand or automatically to release the paper support when the paper carriage is to be returned but which will effectively prevent all return movement of the paper support except when the detent is positively actuated.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purose of illustration only, and that I do not esire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a traveling paper support, and a connection between said paper canriage and said paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the lat ter, of means to prevent the return move ment of iaid paper support, and a device connected with said means and with said paper :arriage to release said paper sup port and to impart return movement to said paper support and to said paper carriage.
2. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a traveling paper support, and a connection between said paper carriage and paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the latter, of a device to prevent the return move ment oi said paper support, and means arranged adjacent to said. carriage to manipulate said device to release said paper support.
3. 9. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a carriage return lever for said paper carriage, a traveling paper support, and a connection be tween said paper carriage and said paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the latter, of a device to prevent the return movement of said paper support comprising, a movable detent, a rod operatively connected with said-sdctent and with said carriage return lever, whereb the movement of the latter will actuate said detent to release said paper support.
10. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a carriage return lever for said paper carriage, a travcling paper support, and a connection between said paper carriage and said paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the latter, of a device to prevent return movement of said paper support comprising a movable detent, a rod operatively connected with said detent and detachably connected with said carriage return lever, whereby said rod may be actuated either by said lever or independently thereof to actuate said detent and release said paper support.
11. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a carriage return lever for said paper carriage, a travcling paper support, and a connectionbetween said paper carriage and said paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the latter, of a device to prevent the return movement of said paper support comprising a movable detent, a rod operatively connected with said detent and detachably connected with said carriage return lever, said rod having a finger piece to enable it to be detached from said lever and actuated independently thereof.
12. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a carriage return lever for said paper carriage, a traveling paper support, and a connection between said paper carriage and said paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the latter, of a device to prevent the return movement of said paper support, an operable connection between said device and said carriage return lever to actuate said device to release said paper support, said connection being a yieldable one to permit of the limited movement of said paper support relatively to said carriage.
13. The combination, with a typewriting machine having a paper carriage, a lever carried by said paper carriage, a traveling paper support, and an operative connection between said paper carriage and'said paper support to cause movement to be imparted to the latter, of a device to prevent the return movement of said paper support, an actuating rod supported at one end by said paper support and operatively connected with said device, and connected at its other end with the lever onsaid carriage, said connecting rod being yieldable to permit said paper sup port to have alimited movement relatively to said carriage.
14.
