To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. BAUER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Lansdowne, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new andnseful bupport for Indirect or Semi-Indirect Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates to a new and useful support for indirect or semi-direct lighting fixtures and consists of means for the individual control of each lighting element contained within the bowl, which means extend to a point beneath the bowl.
It further consists in providing means whereby the accumulation of dust, dirt, etc., may be removed from the bowl in a convenient manner.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and or- .ganization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line y-2 Fig. 1, with the bowl and certain parts omitted. Fig. 3 is a side elevationof one portion of the support in detached position. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a coacting portion of the support in detached position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body portion of the support which is here shown in the form of a plate and which is adapted for suitable connection with a suspension rod or other suitable supporting means, connected with the ceiling or other desired point; As here shown, I have provided a metal hickey or coupling 2 in threaded engagement with the body portion 1 and also in threaded engagement with the suspension rod or tube 3. Each of said clamping members 10 is here shown as provided with arubber cap or block 11 serving as a resilient engaging Also carried by the means for the bowl. disk 9 is a threaded bowl supporting member or collar 12 which is preferably provided with a flaring end l3.
l1 designates a threaded guide channel here shown as a tubular sleeve open at both ends, which is adapted to pass through an opening in the bowl to have suitable engagement with the threaded member or collar 12, so that a clamping member carried by the sleeve 14 will in conjunction with the members 1O grasp the bowl to support it. By reason of the threaded engagement of the sleeve 14 and member 12 these parts are adjustable with respect to each other, and I preferably form a shoulder 15 on said sleeve adapted to abut the disk 9 to limit the inward movement of the sleeve into the tubular member or sleeve 14 is an opening 16 or a plurality thereof suitably located therein in order that when the parts are in operative position and the bowl 17 is suitably clamped between the clamping members, the said openings will be located adjacent the bottom of the interior of the bowl 17 through which openings the accumulation of dust, dirt, etc. in the bowl may be readily removed through the channel 14 without disturbing the connection of the bowl.
18 designates a clamping or yielding washer suitably supported or carried by the threaded tube 14 to be located exterior of the bowl 17 and, as shown, I provide an extension flange bowl supporting shelf 19 on said tube a said pull chains extending from the sockets ing washer 18 in position. The clamping washer 18 may be of any suitable construction and, as here shown, is formed of a ring preferably of rubberserving as a resilient clamping washer and between which and the adjustable bowl clamping members the bowl 17 is held. By means of this construction it will be understood that the adjustable bowl clamping members 10 engage with the inner wallof the bowl and, by reason of their independent adjustability, provide for i i any inequalities that may exist in the bowl and the adjustable connection of the thread-- ed tube 14 with the collar 12 provides for the proper gripping action of the clamping members initially, in order that the bowl will be properly held without liability to breakage with the clamping washer 18 engaging the outer wall of the bowl, around the opening in the bowl.

22 designates a conductor, connected in suitable circuit, which extends downwardly 35' through the hard rubber bushing 23 and through the tube 14 to a point a suitable distancebeneath the bowl and has connected therewith a socket 24: which is adapted to receive a suitable plug 25 for lighting an additional or auxiliary fixture, as will be evident. When it is desired, I mount upon the conductor 22 a covering for the socket 24, such as a tassel which surrounds the socket 2a to conceal the same and serves as an ornamentalfeature, but it will be understood that any suitable device may be employed for this purpose.

It will be further understood that while I have shown and described the support as employed with respect to an electric light initially adjusted in the disk 9 to an even position. The bowl 17 with the tube 14 inserted through the opening in the bowl is then brought to a position so that the said tube 14: may be screwed into the collar 12, to bring the gripping members into suitable relation to grip the bowl 17 therebetween with the shoulder 15 in engagement with the disk 9, which will insure an immovable connection for the bowl and at the same time by reason of the shoulder engaging the disk further inward movement of the/'tube 14: is prevented which might otherwise break the bowl.
If it is found that the bowl clamping screws 10 are not in the proper position to provide for this, the operator can make such adjustment of the said members 10 as may be necessary or should there be an inequality in the bowl, the proper screw or screws 10 may be independently adjustedto provide for the same and thus insuring in every in stance for the proper gripping or engagement of the bowl and for holding the same immovable.
By reason of employing the open ended tube the pull members may extend there through to a convenient point beneath and exterior of the bowl to provide for the individual control of the lighting elements and by locating the opening or openings 16 of the tube 1 1, at the lower interior portion of the bowl, the accumulations from the interior of the bowl may be passed therethrough and such opening or openings will provide for a circulation of air which will tend to prevent accumulations of dust and dirt and will lessen the amount thereof.
Another advantage derived from the use of the open ended channel medium is that conductors may lead therethrough in a convenient and practical manner to be connected with an auxiliary fixture or fixtures.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a support for indirect or semi-indirect lighting fixtures, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, a body portion, independently adjustable bpjvl clamping members carried thereby, a
threaded bowl supporting member carried lli between which and the clamping members the bowl to be supported is engaged.
2. In a support for a bowl havin an opening therein, a body portion, clamping means adapted to engage the inner wall of the bowl, a yielding clamping means adapted to engage the outer wall of the bowl, an open ended tubular sleeve ass-' ing through the opening in the bowl a apted for engagement with the body portion and carrying said yielding clamping means,
-- anda pull member connected at its inner end to the control of the lighting medium and passing through said tubular sleeve to the exterior thereof.
3. In a holder for a bowl having an opening therein, a body portion carrying the lighting elements, adjustable bowl clamping members carried by the body, a threaded bowl supporting member supported by the body, a tubular open ended sleeve adapted for adjustable connection with the bowl supporting member, and having an opening in its wall communicating with the interior of the bowl at the bottom thereof, a yielding clamping means carried by the sleeve and between which and the adjustable bowl.

In a, device of the character stated, the combination with a bowl having an opening 'therethrough, of a body portion suitably supported, a frame carried thereby, a threaded bowl supporting member on said frame, adjustable bowl clamping members carried by said frame and adapted for enga ement with the wall of said bowl, a threa ed tubular sleeve passing said opening and adapted for engagement with said bowl supporting membet, and yielding clamping means carried thereby and between which and said adjustable bowl clampin members the bowl is held and supporte 7. In adevice of the character stated, the combination with a bowl having an opening therein, of a body portion suitably supported, alighting element carried thereby, a threaded bowl supporting member carried by said body,adjustable bowl'clamping members carried by the body and'adapted for engagement with one wall of the bowl, a tubular open ended sleeve passing through the opening and engaging the bowl supporting member, yielding clamping means carried by said sleeve andadapted for engagement with the opposite wall of the bowl, a control device for the lighting element carried by the body portion, and a pull member connected with said control device and passing through said sleeve and extending exterior, thereof.
