Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR M. HAR- RINGTON and PETER MULLEN, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain Improvements in Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is designed primarily to provide improved means for carrying the load independently of the casing, to permit limited movement of the supporting means relatively to the casing. and to avoid strains, with consequent reduction in breaks, particularly in the casing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a hoist embodying our improvements; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a casing member; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a hanger.
The hoist, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises the load sheave 1 having journals 2 and 2 within which revolves the shaft 3, the sheave carrying the load chain 4. Hangers 5, suitably drop Forgings, are provided with the top bearings 5 in which are journaled pintles 6 of a cross head 6 having the hook 7 swiveled therein. The hangers are provided at their lower ends with the integrally formed cylindrical bearings 5 comprising section 5 and 5 extending oppositely from the body of the hanger, the sections 5 being adapted for engagement in the channels 1 of the load sheave to maintain the parts in the desired relation.
Casing plates or members 8 and 8' are provided with central apertures 8 which are sleeved on the respective bearing sections 5, and with the recesses 8 in which the hangers 5 are seated, the hangers having a limited movement of oscillation relatively to the plates. Casing bodies 9 and 9 are bolted to the respective plates 8 and 8 by bolts 10, the separate casings thus formed containing known types of driving and breaking mechanisms.
As the journals 2 and 2 are wholly removed from the casing members 8 and 8, as also from the casing members 9 and 9;
and as the bearings 5 carry the load upon the journals directly through the hangers 5 to the cross head 6 and hook 7 independently of the casings; and as the cvlindrical sections or bushings 5 are movable freely within the casing members 8 and 8' and the hangers 5 are movable independently of the casings, the latter are wholly relieved of twisting strains and strains due to the load, with resulting reduction in breakage particularly liable to take place in carrying the load directly or through connections with the cast iron casings.
Having described our invention. we claim:
1. In a hoist, hangers having bearings, a load sheave having journals revoluble in said bearings, and one or more casings carried on the bearings of said hangers independently of said journals.
2. In a hoist, a load sheave having journals, a cross head having pintles, hangers having bearings in which said journals and pintles are revoluble, and casings having members sleeved on and carried by hanger bearings aforesaid. said casings being supported independently of said journals and said hangers being adapted to oscillate independently of said casings.
3. In a hoist. a load sheave having journals, hangers having hearings in which said journals are revoluble. said bearings having oppositely projecting sections. and casings having members sleeved on said sections.
4. In a hoist, a load sheave having iour' nals, hangers provided with cylindrical bearings having oppositely projecting cylindrical. sections, and easing members sleeved on said projections and having recesses in which said hangers have a limited movement of oscillation.
