Description

0. SMITH. CHART FOR THE SPINAL COLUMN. APPLICATION FILED NOV. I5. 1913.

THE NORRIS PETERS coy, PHOTOJJTHQ, \VASHINGTDN, D. c.
OAKLEY SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CHART FOR THE SPINAL COLUMN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented am as, rare.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OAKLEY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Chart for the Spinal Column, of which the following is a specification.
In the examination and treatment of the spinal column it is extremely desirable to have a simple and certain scheme for indicating the findings for subsequent compari son. The indicating of the entire spine upon a single sheet or page would either involve the employment of a sheet of an inconveniently large size to be easily handled, or, it the sheet were of convenient size, the chart would necessarily be of such small size as to render it useless so far as indicating findings thereon were concerned. It is, of course, possible and desirable to consider the vertebrae in groups, and a diagrammatic or schematic charting of such groups may be conveniently made upon separate pages of a note book of convenient size. Such a charting, however, would have the considerable disadvantage of failing to show the often important and vital relation existing betweenvertebrae of different groups.
The object of my present invention is to provide in book form and of convenient size a chart upon each page of which may be readily indicated the findings with relation to each vertebra in groups of convenient size and the relations between adjacent vertebrae of different groups.
I attain the above object by the design illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows two pages of a note book prepared in accordance with my invention.
Figure 1 is an illustration of a page of a note book embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an illustration of a page adapted to succeed the page as shown in Fig. 1.
I have found that the vertebrae may be conveniently considered and listed in groups of five. Upon the pages I have drawn diagrammatic or schematic vertebrae, 1, con sisting of groups of rectangular blocks, 2, which are best adapted for receiving the notations which the doctor may desire to make.
A group of five of the schematic vertebrae, 1, are arranged one above another in the central portion, 3, or" the page, and above and below the group, 3, are provided two more schematic vertebrae, and 5, and 6 and 7, which belong respectively to the group appearing upon the preceding and succeeding pages. In this manner there is ample provision for indicating clearly, upon the same page, the relation of the vertebrae of the group illustrated to the vertebrae of the ad jacent groups. In order to :l'ully secure the advantages which may follow from illustrating and considering the vertebrae in groups, I have made the grouping apparent by dividing the group proper appearing on a page from the vertebrae of the preceding and succeeding groups by the heavy lines, 8 and 9.
Having illustrated and described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A spinal chart comprising a diagrammatic representation of a plurality of schematic vertebrae arranged in groups to illustrate the comparative relation of the vertebrae of one group to its respective preceding and succeeding groups, and each vertebral representation comprising a rectangular area adapted to receive indicia for indicating findings for subsequent comparison.
2. In a spinal chart a schematic representation of a plurality of vertebra, said vertebrae arranged in groups to illustrate the comparative relation of the vertebrae of one group to its respective preceding and succeeding group, each vertebral representation comprising a plurality of separated conventional areas adapted to receive indicia for indicating findings thereon for subsequent comparison, and each respective subsidiary group being divided from the principal group.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
