Description

'Unrrnn erm ne Pa 1' l a ADRIEN BAIDIN, OF ,PARIS, FRANCE ASSIGNOR T0 SOCTETE GENERALE DES NITBUR'ES,
OF PARIS, FRANCE, A CORPORATION OF FRANCE.
PROCESS OF MANUFACTURE OF ALUMINIUM NITRID.
No Drawing.
T all whom it may coho-em Be it known that I, ADRIEN'BADIN, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of 12 Rue Roqupine, Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Process of Manufacture of Aluminium Nitrid, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to a process of manufacture of aluminium nitrid.
This process consists in this .that there is caused topassinto a flame produced by the combustion of coal dust, an aluminous compound, for example bauxite, mixed with carbon, so as to beable to fix the nitrogen, the quantity of air necessary for combustion being chosen in such a way that this combustion gives almost exclusively carbon monoxid. A combustion of this kind can be produced by causing to burn 100 kgs. of coal by means of a quantity of atmospheric air which should be up to a maximum of 440 cubic meters. i
To carry out the process, one adds to the 100 kgs. of coal dust above mentioned for example a mixture finely pulverized of 30 kgs. of bauxite and of 12 kgs. of carbon. As
the apparatus to be employed for this purpose, one may utilize any suitable coal dust furnace known in industrial applications.
The coal dust falls in the known manner from ahopper lnto a tube whereln it'is car- 'ried along by air blown in. The coal dust 1s ignited at the end of the tube which delivers into a chamber preferably by means of a flame produced by'a suitable blowpipe, e. g. a heavy oil blowpipe, which it is advantageous to allow to burn continually in order to maintain, to render more active or to increase the combustion. Obviously there may be also employed to this end a gas blow Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2, 1915. Serial No. 5,793.
oxid.
pipe. (water gas, producer gas, etc.) or any blown flame. There is formed in the chamber, near the place where the pipe delivers, a flame of several meters, the length of which will vary according to the arrangement employed. The mixture of bauxite and of carbonblown in with the coal dust is carried along into the flame and a fixation of nitrogen takes place there. This effect is very surprising, for, according to data to be found in books, the converting of coal, by its combustion, into carbon monoxid (CO) gives only a theoretical temperature of 1440" at which the fixation of nitrogen seems impossible, especially when there is present, as is here the case, an important quantity of oxid of carbon.
Iclaim:
1. A process of manufacture of aluminium nitrid, characterized by this that an aluminous material, mixed with carbon, is sent into a flame produced by the combustion of coal dust, the quantity of air for burning being chosen in such a way that the combustion gives almost exclusively carbon mon- Dr. Wrrr O.
