SELF AND R. N. GAUGHELL, O F SAME PLAGE.
Lettera Patent No. 114,324. dated Ma.y 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAND-CAPS FOR HUBS OF VEHICLS.
{l'ha Schedule referred to in theue Lettere Patent nd makng par: 01' the me.
'..:'o all whom t't may conceru:
Be t known'that I, GEORGE H. NEVENS, of Livrmore, -county.of Alameda, State of California, have nvented an Improired Sand-Cap fon Axle-Boxes; end I do-hereby declare the follow-mg descrptin and aooompa.nying drawing are su.fificient to (anableany person skilled in the art or science to which it most n ea.rly appertams to ma.ke and use my sad invention or mprovements without further invention or experiment.
The obje et of my invention is to provide 2m mproved sand-cap for the axle-boxes of vehicles; and 11: consists of a. ring of metal, which is made conicai in fo1m, and has its smaller end attached to the axle near the collar. 'lhe edge of -the larger end projects into a groove which is formd in the inuer end ofthe hub, end thus efi'ectually protects the colla.r and axlebox from sand end dust.
Referring to che zwcompanyng dra.wing for a more complete explanation of my invention- A is the hub of a wheel, and
B the a.xie, which may be fitted in any of the ordinztry ways.
Just behind the collar 0 is a. ring, E, ci wood or metal, whieh may be put on by removing the collar- C. In the case of axies already made, or in new work,
this ring may be slippe d on before the a.xle is welded up.
lhe metal cap D may be cast wth the ring E if the latter is of metal; or, if the ring is of wood, the cap ca.u be formed of sheet metal and suitably attaehed. 'Ihs cap is made conical in form, the louger pari; openng toward the Wheelhub. This shape causes auy sa'nd or dust that may fai1 on it to sfide or fall away from the hub.
A groove, a, is made in the end of the hub, and the edge of tbe cap enters this groove, being extended over the collar 0 sufificientiy for that purpose.
By this arrangement ail semi end dust is eiectually exciuded from the arde-box, and the device is easily applied to any wagon.
Havng thus descrb'ed my invention,
\Vlrat I claim, a.nd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The'conieal ca.p D with the ring E, in combination with the groovd l1ub A, subst-antially a-s and for the purpose set forth.
In wituess whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seui..
GEORGE-H. NEVENS. [L. 8.]
