LOUIS SCHBAMM, JR., F .ARIGERQ MRYLAND.
`IDIilVICIEl FQRTTRAGTING SUBMABINES .ANDTHE LIKE.
a To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, Louis SoHRAitivn-.I r.,
' a citizen 'ofthe United States, residing at Armiger, 1in the county of Anne Arundel and Stateof Marylandyhave invented certain new and usefulf? Improvements in Devices for Attracting Submarines and the like, 'of vwhich-the following' is a specifica-` tion. i
This inventionk relates to 4meansfor atl tracting submarines, or other small metallic Heating bodies toward and to the side of an' ship rality of the figures of the-drawings, they a the same kreference char- 'their course and the ship'.
A vfurther object is to provide means for larly arranged to -draw submarines outof toward and to the sides of electrifying submarines thus drawn to thev sides of a ship.
A further object is to provide means, in
connection with such magnets,'to show lights and ring signal bells on the ship when a.
.located at suitable points on the s ip. The
submarine has been drawn to its side" With these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction, `ar-` rangement and combination of the partsof a mechanism for carrying out such objects,
which will be iirst fully described herein-- after and afterward specifically claimed.
In order thatthe construction and opera-- tion thereof may begreadily comprehended, I have illustrated lapproved embodiments of my invention in theaccompanying drawings, and I will now proceed to fully and specifically describe, the same, having ref-v erence to said drawings, in which- Figure- 1 represents ship or vessel equipped with my invention,l in slde elevation. Fig. 2 represents the same in front elevation. Fig. 3 represents, in sectional view, one of the contactends of the device comprised in my invention. Fig. 4 represents, diagrammatically, the magnets', dynamo, circuits and contacts'.
Whereverthe same parts appear in a pluare indicated by acters. x y
Referring speciically to the drawings, 10
I indicates the hull, 11 the bow and 12 the stern of a vessel or ship, which mayor may not `be' provided with suitable smokestacks` 13, lookouts 14, and cannons 15.
The vessel/must be provided with means Specification of Letters' Ratent.
The object of th'e invention is to provide a ship, orY man of war, with magnets particu-` Patent-ea'aune 15,1915.

forgenerating electricity, such Yfor instance, asa dynamo, as indicated at 16 in Fig. 4.-, to
at 17$andi '18, to'energizepowerful electromagnetsfas at 19, 2.0. :These electromagnets,
in anvdesiredxnuinben are suspended over on the magnets are pivotally mounted. "On thesldesofthe ship are standards 23 over which pass cables 24 leading from capstans I or Winches 25 to points of attachment 26 on lthe magnets, whereby the magnets may be raised or lowered to change their` angles of projectlon from the fvessel, and4 may be hauled aboard the vessel. In advance of the Yelectromagnets arev contacts 27, 28, protected by glass caps 29,.and all parts to be submerged 1n the water are waterproofed. The
contact points arein a circuit 30, 31, inv
which 'are a source of electric current, as a battery 32,a signal bell 33 and a lamp or light 34, the battery, bell and li ht'being "signal bell 33, thus notifying the crew of the ship of the capture of the submarine. `The `submarine will also be electrified, shocking the crew thereof and killing or rendering them temporarily helpless.
The utilit -of my invention will be 0bsupply current through suitable circuits, as
as vious from the foregoing. and it will be 4:further obvious that slight changes and va-v riations may be made in the location, construction and o eration of the various parts,
I without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is l 1. Incombination with a ship, powerful electromagnets, means for energizing them,` means for securing them to the ship to project from the sides thereof, an electric circuit on the ship, and contacts in said circuit in advance ofthe magnets. l
. 2. In combination with a ship, powerful 'electromagnets, means for energizing them,
means for securing them to the ship to pro ject from the sides thereof, an electric circuit on the ship, and contacts in said circuit in advance of the magnets, said contacts being protected by glass caps.
3. In combination with a ship, powerful electromagnets, means for energizing them, means for securing them to the ship to project from the sides thereof, an electric circuit on the ship, contacts in said circuit in advance of the magnets, and a bell in said circuit.
4. In combination with a ship, powerful electromagnets, means for energizing them, means for securing them to the ship to pro- 5. A ship provided with brackets on its 20 sides, electromagnets pivoted in said brackets, means for energizing the magnets and f means for handling the magnets on their pivots.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature 25 in presence of two witnesses.
