Description

Letters Patent No. 114,323, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL MATCH-SA ES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent; and making part of the same.
I, JOSEPH MUSGROVE, of the city of Newark and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvemerits in the Mode of Constructing Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification in connection with the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a front view of match-safe entire combining my improvements.
Figure '2 is a top view of the same.
Figure 3 is a form of the metal stamped out ready to he formed and soldered.
1n the first place 1 cut or stamp the metal the required shape and size, as shown in fig. 3, after which the parts marked a d are formed into a semicircle or other desired shape, and the inner edges soldered to the hack d, as shown in fig. 2.
The parts marked 1) b are also bent so as to form the bottoms. Thus the safe may he made of one piece of metal.
The space in the centermarked 0 is simply sized and sanded for the purpose of igniting the match, and, being in the center, the safe will net oscillate or swing from side to side when rubbed by the match.
A match-safe constructed in this manner requires but one piece of metal, which can be stamped out at one blow, thus saving labor and cheapening the process of manufacture.
I do not confine myself, however, to this particular form or to the one piece of metal, as it may be thought desirable, in order to save material, to form the top of the hack d and the part marked 1) b, forming the bottoms of the match-holders, with separate pieces and solder them fast. Still I think the saving of time in the-former way more than compensates for the diiference in the amount of material required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A match-safe constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
