To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, AUBURN S. CUNNING-,

HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful TimeRecorder, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to a time recorder andaims to provide a novel and improved device of that character.

The present invention contemplates the provision of a time recorder for use by employees, such as machinists, mechanics, clerks and the like, and of such construction as to be adapted for the recording of the employees time, to indicate the time consumed on various jobs in a simple and expeditious manner.

As a more specific object the present invention has in view the provision of a time recorder including a removable time card or sheet, adapted for the recording of numbers of obs or other information thereon, in combination with a clock-actuated, disk or cover for receiving the time card or sheet thereunder and having a slot or opening cooperable with the divisions or rulings of the time card, in order that the employee may apply the job number or numbers, or other information to the time card through the slot opening, and whereby the numbers, initials, or other marks applied to the time card, will bear a proper time relation with the divisions of the time card.

It is also within the scope of the present invention to improve a device of the nature indicated, which will be comparatively simple, compact, nonencumbering and inexpensive in construction, and which will be simple, convenient, practical, serviceable and efficient in its use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventlo'n resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved recorder, a portion of the rotatable disk being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmental plan view illustrating a modification.

In carrying out the present invention, there is provided a table or bed plate 1 having the corner legs 2 which are seatable upon a bench, table or other surface, for supporting the device. The table or bed plate 1 may be of any suitable construction.

Secured to the bottom of the plate 1, is a suitable clock or clockwork 3, which is preferably disposed centrally of the plate 1, and which has its hour hand arbor or shaft 4 journaled upwardly through the plate 1, the hands of the clock being removed.

Carried by the upper end portion of the arbor, is a disk or circular plate 5, which has a central aperture engaged over the arbor 4, nuts or other securing elements 6 being engaged upon the arbor 4 above and below the disk 5 to clamp the disk in place. The disk 5 is thus arranged to be rotated with the hour hand arbor 4, once every twelve hours.

Time cards or sheets 7 are seatable upon the table or bed plate 1, and are constructed of paper or other suitable material upon which numerals or other data may be inscribed or written. The cover disk or cover 5 is provided with a radial slot or opening 8, preferably extending to the margin or rim of the disk 5, and terminating short of the center of the said disk, the slot 8 being arranged to expose the divisions or spaces of one time card or sheet 7 in succession or sequence. Each time card or sheet 7 is ruled or marked off in a peculiar manner, the same being printed or otherwise formed with the lines and markings as will presently appear. The card or sheet 7 is provided with a series of concentric arcs 9, 10, 11, 12 and 12, extending to the inner edge of the card and dividing the card into arouate spaces 13, 14, 15, and 16, respectively, between the innermost and outermost arcs 9 and 12. Radial division lines 17 intersect the lines 9, 10, 11, 12 and 12 to divide the arcuate spaces 13, 14, 15 and 16 into divisions or spaces 18, 19, 20 and 21 respectively. Thus, the divisions or spaces of the several arcuate series lie in radial alinement, the divisions being preferably such as to represent ten minutes or one-sixth of an hour, although the time card or sheet may be ruled so as to be adapted to various circumstances. Every sixth radial line 17 is marked adjacent its inner end, or the are 9, with the proper hour, as clearly seen in Fig. 1, and the divisions or spaces 18 of the arcuate column 13 are marked with the respective hours and fractions thereof, while the divisions or spaces 19 of the column 14: are marked in sequential order with the minutes running in steps of ten. The hour columns or divisions 13 may be varied, according to the circumstances for any length of working day, the minute columns or divisions 1 1 being graduated or numbered accordingly, starting with the beginning of the particular day or half day. The opposite cards or sheets 7 are separate and are marked A. M. and P. M., the graduations or divisions at the opposite sides being properly arranged to this end. The slot or opening 8 terminates at its inner end adjacent the are 11., in order that the arcuate hour and minute columns 13 and 1 1, of the opposite cards will be covered or hidden by the disk 5, and in order that the inscribable divisions or spaces 20 and 21 of the outermost columns 15 and 16 will be eXposible in sequence through the opening or slot 8 as the disk 5 is rotated. he divisions or spaces 20 and 21 are rranged to receive the job numbers, employees initials, or other data which is to be recorded upon the time card. To this end, the divisions or spaces of the second right and left hand columns 15 are marked Com or the like, standing for Commenced, while the divisions or spaces 21 of the right and left hand column 1 are marked Fin standing for Finished. The divisions or spaces 20 are thus adapted to have applied thereto, the job numbers or other data, as jobs are taken up, while the spaces or divisions 21 are adapted to receive the job numbers or other data when the jobs are finished or completed.

If desired, a checking means may be provided, by disposing a carbon sheet 23 upon the table or bed plate 1 with its face up wardly, whereby the numerals, initials, or other data applied to the divisions or spaces 20 and 21 will be impressed upon the bottom of the time card.

As a means for holding the cards or sheets 7 in place when inserted upon the plate 1, the inner edges of the cards are provided with notches 24, which are engageable with lugs 25 mounted upon the plate 1. The inner edges of the cards 7 are also provided with central notches or recesses 26 for accommodating the hour hand arbor 4 of the clock. The carbon sheet 23 is engaged over the lugs 25 and around the arbor 4t.

In use, after the proper time card or dial 7 has been applied upon the table or bed plate 1, the device is in condition for the registering or recording of the data desired. It will be evident from the foregoing, that the disk 5 is rotated by the clock, the divisions or spaces 20 and 21 will be exposed in succession or sequence. It is thus an easy matter for the employees or workmen, when commencing a job or piece of work, to note'upon the exposed division or space 20 appearing through the slot or opening 8, the number of the job commenced, or other data which is to be recorded. The card 7 may then be withdrawn for the use of the apparatus by the employees. Then, after the job has been completed or finished, the disk 5 in the meantime having been rotated by the clock 3, the employee or workmen may again insert the card under the disk 5 to record in the exposed division or space 21, the number of the job which has been linished and may then place within the adjacent or complementing space 20, the number of the next job to be taken up. For eX ample, reference being had to Fig. 1, job No. 1e00, as recorded,was commenced at 2.10 p. m. as indicated on the time table, and was finished at 2.50 p. m., the next job No. 1&0? having been commenced at 2.50 p. 111., when job No. 1406 was finished. The card or semi-dial also indicates that the j ob No. 1 10? was completed at 3. 10 p. m., and that job No. 3109 was commenced at that time. In this manner, by simply writing or placing the job numbers or other data, in the proper divisions or spaces 20 and 21, as the jobs are taken up and completed, an accurate record of the amount of time consumed on each j ob is kept. Thus, to reckon the number of minutes consumed on job No. 1406, it is merely necessary to subtract the number of minutes indicated in the division or space 19 registering with or complementing the division or space 20 in which the job No. 1 106 is registered, from the minute number in the division or space 19 corresponding with the division or space 21 in which the job number is recorded. From the time card or sheet illustrated in Fig. 1, the minute scale will quickly indicate that forty minutes had been consumed on job No. 1 106 by subtracting 100 from no in the respective divisions or spaces 19 of the minute column or scale. Similarly, to record the time on job No. 1 107 by subtracting no from 490 as indicated in the minute column 14:, it is found that fifty minutes were required to finish job No. 1407.

Various special dials may be ruled or printed upon the time cards or sheets, according to the nature of the work or other conditions or circumstances. For example, instead of employing the hour arbor 4 of the clock, the minute hand arbor may be employed, so that the cover disk 5 may be rotated once every hour, when more accurate records are to be kept, that is, of the fractions of the hour.

As above indicated, the employment of the carbon sheet 23 serves as a check for the record upon the upper surface of the time card or sheet 7, as will be obvious without further discussion being necessary. Any printing desired, such as employees or workmans number, date, etc., or columns or scales upon the time cards or sheets 7, for reckoning the costs of the jobs, or the like, may be applied upon the time cards 7, either upon its face or back, or both.

In the variation illustration Fig. 4, the time card '7 and cover 5 are provided with openings 5 exposing the face of dial 3 of the clock 3, the members 5 and 7 being annular, and the hour hand 45 which is attached to the arbor 4, has its outer or free end riveted or otherwise secured to the annular member or cover 5 to rotate the same over the time card 7*. The annular member 5 is provided with a slot or opening 8 for exposing the commencing and finishing divisions or spaces of the time card 7.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawing, the advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be obvious to those versed in the art, without further comment being made, it being noted that the objects aimed at have been carried out satisfactorily by the provision of the peculiar structure herein disclosed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a recording device, a supporting plate, a time card supported upon one side of the plate, a cover mounted movably over the time card, and a clock operatively connected to the cover for moving the same, the

2. In a recording device, a supporting plate, a time card supported upon one side thereof, a rotary cover mounted over the time card, a clock operatively connected to the cover to rotate the same, the time card having arcuate series of time divisions and arcuate series of inscribable divisions as sociated with the time divisions, and the cover having a radial slot arranged to eX- pose in sequence, the inscribable divisions of the time card.

3. In a recording device, a supporting plate, a time card supported upon one side thereof, a clockwork carried by the other side of the plate and having an arbor pro jecting through the plate to the first mentioned side thereof, and a cover for the time card secured upon the said arbor, the time card having arcuate series of time divisions and arcuate inscribable divisions associated with the time divisions, and the cover having an opening arranged to expose in sequence, the inscribable divisions of the time card.
