ROD-PACKING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the Unlted States, residing at ochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rod-Packings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to rod packings and more particularly to that type used in connection with fluid pressure apparatus as steam and gas engines, air compressors and similar apparatus.
An object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary packing device which is normally out of packing relation with the rod but which may be brought into packing relation when desired without stopping the operation of the apparatus.
To this and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of the invention applied, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the operating steam connections and vent.
There is illustrated a fragment of a boiler shell 10 apertured for the passage of the stem 11 which is of the ordinary plain cylindrical form, the usual form of packing box 12 being fitted therearound. Secured to the inner side of the shell there is a cylinder 13 having a flange base 14: bolted steam tight to the shell. Suitable gaskets 15 are confined between the packing box and the shell and between the cylinder 13 and the shell. The cylinder 13 at its outer end is provided with an inturned flange 16, serving as a stop, for a purpose to be described. A piston 17 is engaged slidably on the stem 11 within the cylinder, being properly fitted to the latter and having packing rings 18 thereon. At its inner end toward the box 12, the piston is provided with aground conical seat 19 in which there is adapted to seat the adjacent end of a sliding valve collar 20 engaged around the stem, this and the piston being freely and independently movable on the stem. Secured to the stem inwardly of the collar 20, there is a seat collar 21, the connection between the two. being steam tight. This collar is formed with a conical seat 22 toward the collar 20, and the latter is provided with a suitably formed valve face to engage snugly therein. The collar Specification of Letters Patent. 20 may be formed of brass or other suitable metal, while the piston and collar 21 may be ormed of steel. This obviates the expense of fitting a facing on either valve or seats. A port channel 23 is formed in the outerface of the flange 1 1 next the boiler shell, opening on the interior of the cylinder, communicating with which there are suitable openings 24 through the shell and flange base of the packing box. Leading to these openings there is a suitable pipe 25, having communiaction with the interior of the boiler at 26, a normally open cut-ofl' valve 26 being interposed adjacent the boiler outlet. The pipe 25 has a blow-ofi extension 28, closed by the valve 29. It will thus be seen that the pressures on each side of the piston where left by the movement of the collar 21 under inward movement of the stem 11 into In this way there will be practically no wear on the cylinder and engaged part of the piston, owing to the rarity of the use of the latter.
ien it is necessary to renew the packing in the box 12, the valve 27 is closed and the one 29 opened. The pressure on the outer end of the cylinder 13 being thus relieved, the piston 17 is forced by the direct boiler pressure of steam along the cylinder engaging the valve collar 20, which is in turn carried into a snug seat in the collar 21, thus closing communication securely through the piston and around the stem 11. The packing rings 18 being of the proper type and operating properly, passage of steam therearound is prevented, regardless of the position of the stem 11. Should a small amount of steam escape, however, to the outer end of the cylinder, it will have free passage to the atmosphere through the valve 29. The packing in the box 12 may then be renewed while full pressure is on the boiler, without From the foregoing. it will be seen that therehas been provided a structure in which through the piston and the latter practically standing still due to the fact that the pressure on the opposite faces thereof balance the same within the chamber formed by the operated packing due to the fact that cylinder 18, this'being admitting fluid provision has been made for to the chamber on opposite ton. The construction is such that a preponderant fluid pressure may be created on one of the faces to cause the piston 17 to enter in packing relation to the rod so that the main sacking may be renewed. In the illustrated embodiment, this is produced by causing the piston to engage with the seat or shoulder on the rod 11, but, of course, other packing relations between the fluidelement and the rod are within the scope of this invention.
The present arrangement permits the main-packing to be'renewed during the reciprocations of the rod, and, after such operation, the auxiliary packing may be caused to assume its normal ineffective position:
What is claimed is: 1. A packing box, a cylinder connected thereto, a stem slidable through each, a seat -element fixed on the stem adjacent the pack- 1 piston ing box, a piston slidable in the cylinder in engagement therewith and steam-tight loosely engaged around the stem, means to make a steam-tight junction between the and seat element when they are pressed toward each other, means to balance one side at times.
2. A device of the class prising a packing gaged therethrough, a cylinder concentric with the stem extending inwardly from the box, a slidable piston in steam-tight engagement within the cylinder and loosely endescribed comgaged around the stem, an annular seat element on the stem between the piston and box, means for making a steam-tight closure of the passage through the piston when the latter is forced toward the said seat element, means for forming communication between the space on each side of the piston, and means for relieving pressure at the side of the piston toward the box.
3. In combination with a rod and its packing, an auxiliary packing member, means for producing equal fluid pressure on opposite faces of said member'to cause said member to lie normallyout of packing relation with the rod, and means for producing face a preponderant fluid pressure on one of said packing member to cause the latter to enter into packing relation with the rod.

In combination with the rod and its packing,anauxiliary packing for use during the'renewal of the main packing comprising a piston through which the rod may chamber operative move, said piston being normally out of packing relationto the rod, a chamber in which the piston is movable, said chamber having provision on opposite sides of the piston for ad mitting fluid thereto to balance the pressure on. the piston, and means for cutting ofl the fluid supply on one side of, the piston so that preponderant pressure will be created on the other side to causethe piston to establi sh packing relation with the rod.
