To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. WINN, citizen of the United States, residing" at Kimball, in the county of Brule and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved rail fastening device, and the principal object of the invention'is to provide novel and useful means for effectually securing a rail to the cross tie, the latter being so constructed as to coact with the fastening device to rigidly secure the rail upon'the tie without the use of the customary spikes.
The invention still further contemplates the provision of means including a plurality lock the same against lateral or longitudinal movement independent thereof.
The'above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accom panying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application. 1
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: I

While interlocking rails, designated 1, have been illustrated in the. drawings, the
fastening device and rail tie may be employed in connection with rails of ordinary construction. 1 V Proceeding now with a description of the invention 2 designates, asan entirety,
my improved cross tie, the same being constructed of a single sheet of metal bent to provide a comparatively broad rail engaging surface 3. Along the longitudinal'edges of'the rail engaging surface '3,"the plate metal of which the tie is composed,,is bent to extend downwardly at an acute angle to the said surface 3as is illustrated to advantage in Fig. 3 of the drawings, theangular portion'being designated 4. About midway the depth of the depending portion of the metallic plate member, the sides of the rail tie, formed by the said depending portion extend substantially parallel asat 5 to a convenient point where they are again bent to provide the base portion 6 of the rail, the latter, by reason of the angular or converged portion 4 of the tie bottom is somewhat narrower than the rail engaging or top surface of the tie. To centrally brace the tie 2, the plate member, adjacent each longitudinal edge, is bent upwardly as at 7, the upwardly bent portions being contiguous and secured in any suitable manner, preferably as indicated at 8. - The rail'engaging surface, as well the converging sides or edges of the tie are serrated or gnarled to render more positive the locking of the fastening device thereuponx The said fastening device, in its preferred embodiment, comprises a plurality of me-' tallic locking plates, arranged in pairs, one pair upon each side of the mill to be fas-' tened. which are bent at right angles to provide upstanding flanges 11, the inner of which is notched as at 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter fully described. The inner end of each locking plate 10 has formed integrally therewith a rail engaging locking tongue 18 disposed to overlap the base of the rail 1 to serve as a substitute for the now commonly used rai'l spikes. The other of the flanges 11 is provided with openings (not shown) through which securing bolts 14 extend, the same being disposed, preferably, one adjacent each end of the said The locking plates 10 are disposed, one upon each side of the rail 1, preferably, at diagonally opposite points. The other locking plates of each pair, designated as an entirety by the numeral 15, are likewise positioned at diagonally opposite points, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the said. plates 15 being provided with flanges 16 and a locking tongue 17 of the same construction as the flanges 11 and tongue 13 above mentioned. Each flange of the plate 15 however, is notched as at 18 to form, with the notches 12, a seat within which the locking bolts 14- are fitted, the said bolts extending transversely of each pair of plates and terminating in an angled extension 19 disposed to overlap the edge of the plate 15 to force the depending portion 20 formed integrally with the said plates 15 firmly against the serrated or gnarled surface of the diverged portion 4 of the tie 5. The plate members 10 are also provided with depending portions 21, likewise disposed for engagement with the opposite gnarled side or edge of the tie 1 from that engaged by the coacting plate 15 in connection with which they are used. a
If desired, a washer 22, may be arranged over each locking bolt 1 1- to assist in forcing the extension 21 against the gnarled surface of the tie, the said washers being maintained against the said extensions through the medium of nuts 23 threaded upon the bolt 14. to provide for the locking of the several plates incapable of lateral or longitudinal movement independent of the tie. Preferably, the rail engaglng surface of the tie is gnarled or serrated, as
' are also the inner or engaging surfaces of the extensions 20 and 21 and thecunder or engaging surfaces of the several plates. As a locking means for the nuts 23, notched plate 24 is provided for each pair of locking members, the nuts being disposed to lit the notches, the latter (the plates being held immovable) preventing rotation of the nuts. A bolt'25 is provided to maintain ea ch plate24e in proper place, the bolt extending through the flanges 11 of the locking plate 10 and having formed integrally-adjacentone end, an annular flange 26 against which one end of an expansion helical spring 27 abuts, the opposite end of the said spring abutting the outer flange 11, the bolt 25, over which the spring is arranged, preventing a buckling of the latter when in use. The provision of the spring 27 will at all times maintain the plates 2a in proper place yet permit, by compressing the said spring, an adjustment of the nuts 23.
From the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is apparent thatthe rails 1 are locked against creeping or spreading upon the tie by reason of the several locking plates adapted for engagement therewith; that adjustment of the several locking plates may be efl ected by loosening the nuts 23 sufficiently to provide for the removal of the bolt 14 from the notches 18; and that by the peculiar tie formation, vertical movement of the fastening device is rendered impossible, the same having first been tightened upon the tie in a manner necessary to the operation of the in vention.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, astthe preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, with-out sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rail fastening device, the combina tion with the cross tie, of locking plates arranged upon each side of the rail, each plate being notched, the notches in the plates on each side of the rail being alined, lock means maintaining the plates immovable relatively to the tie, said lock means fitting the notches aforesaid, and meansforming a part of the several plates and engaging the base flange of the rail to serve as a fastening means.
2; In a rail fastening device, the combination with a cross tie, of a plurality of locking plates arranged upon the tie, said plates being disposed in pairs, one pair of plates upon each side of the rail, the plates of the respective pairs being notched, the notches of the several'plates being alined, lock means maintaining each plate immovable relatively to the tie, said lock means fitting the notches aforesaid, and means forming a part of the several plates and engaging the base flange of the rail, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a rail fastening device, the combination with a cross tie, ofa plurality of adjustable locking plates arranged in pairs upon said tie, one pair of said plates being disposed upon each side of the rail, means formed integrally with each plate adapted for engagement with the said rail, and means including aplurality of locking bolts extending transversely of each pair of plates for locking the same in adjusted position of the tie, and means including a plurality] of locking bolts extending transversely of each pair of locking plates to maintain the said plates in adjusted position and the said plate extensions in engagement with the sides of the tie, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a rail fastening device, the combina- 7 tion with a cross tie, of a plurality of looking plates adjustable longitudinally. upon the said tie, the said plates beingarranged in pairs, one pair being disposed upon each side of the rail, a locking tongue formed integrally 'with each, locking plate, said tongues being disposed to overlap the base of the rail to fasten the same immovable with respect to the tie,extensions formed integrally with each locking plate, the said extensions being disposed to depend upon the sides of the tie, flanges formed integrally with each locking plate, certain of the said flanges having notches formed. therein, and
a plurality of locking bolts, the said bolts being disposed to extend transversely of each pair of locking plates, and to fit the said notches to lockthe said plates immovable with respect to the tie.
6. In a rail fastening device, the combination with a cross tie, ofa plurality of lock- .ing plates,'said plates being arranged in pairs, one pair upon each side of. the rail, means carried by the said plates adapted for engagement With the; rail, bolts extending transversely of each pair of-locking plates, extensions formed integrally with the said plates, the said extensions being disposed to engage the sides of the tie, an extension formed upon one end of each locking bolt, said bolt extensions being adapted for engagement with certain of the said plate 'extensions to lock the said plate in adjusted position against the sides of the tie, as and for the'purpose set forth. j
