FLOYD L. TEMPLE, or TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
MOTION-CONVERTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 3, 1914. Serial No. 848,980.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD L. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motion-Converting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in motion converting devices and has particular application to a device of the class described for converting reciprocating motion 7 is an end view of a modified form of device. 7
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inner member shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the outer member shown in Fig. 3, parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a still further modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the inner member of the device shown in Fig. 6.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the motion converting device comprises an inner hollow cylindrical drum 20 having the outer surface thereof formed at diametrically opposite points with longitudinal grooves 21 dovetailed in cross section, and an outer hollow cylindrical drum 22 encircling the drum 20 and having the inner wall thereof formed with a sinuous groove 23 extending around the drum and having the meeting ends of the sections thereof disposed in angular relation and spaced apart about the drum in such manner that certain of the meeting ends are diametrically opposed at one end edge of the drum, while the remaining meeting ends are similarly opposed at the opposite end edge of the drum and intersect the first ends.
Slidably mounted in the longitudinal slots 21 in the inner drum 20 and of a cross sectional configuration corresponding to that faces thereof equipped with outwardly pro- Patented June 8, 1 915. 1
of the slots are blocks 24 having the outer jecting rollers 25 engaging the adjacent por-' tions of the sinuous groove 23 in the inner wall ofthe outer drum 22. These blocks 24;
are connected through suitable mechanism with the piston of the reciprocating engine and as the blocks reciprocate within the slots 21 in the inner drum the rollers 25 carried by such blocks and in engagement with the sinuous groove 23 in the inner wall of the drum 22 rotate the last-mentioned drum and so convert the reciprocating motion of the engine piston into rotary motion.
If desired, the outer surface of the inner drum 20 may be formed with the sinuous groove 23 and the inner wall of the outer drum 22 formed at diametrically opposite points with the longitudinally extending grooves 21, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 so that the inner drum will revolve and the outer drum remain stationary. In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a fly wheel 26 is formed integral with one end of the inner drum.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the inner drum 20 is equipped with an oil cup 27 communicating with the longitudinal grooves 21 so as to lubricate the same, while in the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the outer drum is equipped with an oil cup 28 whereby lubricating oil may be fed between the contacting surfaces of the inner and outer drums.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of employing my improved motion converting device will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided a motion converting device whereby a shaft coaxial with the shaft of a reciprocating engine may be rotated from the piston of such engine and wherein the component parts are so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum, while the movable parts may be readily and conveniently lubricated so as to facilitate the operations of the device.
I claim:
In a device of the class described, an inner hollow cylindrical drum, an outer hollow cylindrical drum surrounding the first-mentioned drum, one of said drums being formed, at diametrically opposite points, with longitudinally extending slots dovetailed in cross section, the remaining drum having a sinuous groove formed therein and extending about the same, one of said drums being rotatable relatively to the other, blocks slidably mounted Within said longitudinally extending slots and of a cross sectional configuration corresponding to that of the slots and having the outer faces thereof equipped with rollers engaging the adjacent portions of said sinuous groove, and means for sliding said blocks back and forth in said longitudinal groove whereby one of said drums Will be rotated relatively to the other.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOHN MOMILLIN, FRANK E. TEMPLE.
