7 Be it known that I, SIMEoN a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention is an improved safety device for use on railway cars, locomotives and other vehicles which operate on railway rails, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which cooperates with the usual flanged wheels of a railway car to prevent the car wheels from leaving the track. 7
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inverted plan of a portion of a railway car showing a track provided with safety devices constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 45 are detail views of one ofthe safety devices.
For the purposesof this specification the body of a car is indicated at 1 and one of the trucks is indicated at 2 the side members of the truck being indicated at 3, the cross beams at 4, intermediate longitudinal beams at 4, the axles at 5 and the usual flanged wheels 6 being provided which bear on the track rails 7 In accordance with my invention I provide guard wheels 8 which are arranged in an inclined position on the inner sides of the track rails and which are peripherally grooved as at 9 so that each guard wheel is formed with a flange 10 above a track rail and a flange 11 on the inner side of the head thereof. Each guard wheel has trunnions or short axle 12 mounted in the bearings 13 in the arms 14 of a bifurcated pedestal 15 which is arranged in an inclined position and preferably at an angle of about 45, so that the guard wheels are also arranged at such angle. The pedestal is formed at its upper end with a head or plate 16, which is here shown as formed integrally therewith and which is secured to the under side of one of the cross beams 4 of the truck by i means of bolts 17 Strengthening ribs 18 V. Each pedestal isalso provided with a pair of oppositely extending braces 20 the said braces having their upper ends bolted as at 21 to the lower sides of the intermediate longitudinal beams'4 of the truck and having their lower ends bolted to the pedestal as at 22. Two of my improved safety devices will preferably be employed on each truck of a railway car, locomotive or the like so that the guard wheels will be arranged on the inner sides of the both track rails.

A safety device of a class described comprising an inclined pedestal having its lower portion bifurcated and provided at its upper end with a head adapted to be bolted to the under side of a cross beam of a truck and a guard wheel mounted in the bifurcated portion of the pedestal and extending downwardly therefrom, said, guard wheel having an axle mounted in bearings in the arms formed by the bifurcation of the pedestal and having peripheral grooves whereby said guardvwheel is formed with an upper flange to bear above a track rail and with a'lower flange to bear against the inner side of said head of the rail and braces bolted to saidpedestal and adapted to be secured to a member of the truck.
